News Announcement: Elite: Dangerous coming to Xbox One

Things you need to know about consoles:
A: They hold back game development, gaming technology and game all togehter.
B: They are inferior to PC's in practically every way.
C: Their the easy way out when making a game.
D: Which is related to A, it will take time away from development to port the game to the system.

Not sure you can be absolutely certain about those...

A: big publishers hold back development
B: Fairly true here, except cost and accessibility
C: The easy out is making more formulaic games...games are just as challenging to develop on all platforms
D: You don't know this. Frontier can dedicate another team to this...a team that wouldn't be formed were it not for potential revenues from doing the port

Don't get me wrong, I own current and previous gen consoles and PC and Mac, and I've been playing ED with a PS4 controller instead of HOTAS set up so it will work on a console quite well. Consoles also support keyboards so there shouldn't be issues with "radial menus"
What I'm more concerned about are a number of factors:

I think it's too soon. FD aren't geared up to provide AAA support for a console release, and we've seen how bad it's been for us so far (albeit improving slowly).
There is not enough real content in the game to satisfy a console gamer who hasn't experienced this on a PC or understands the background to Elite. The pretty visuals will soon fade as an attention grabber.
That marketing trailer for GDC is going to burn FD badly. They've created the impression that ED is full of PvP/ NPC frantic dogfighting action and frankly it's nowhere near the vision they continue to paint.

It's a bold move but one that may come back to bite very hard.

+1

As to being Inferior to PC's, they are not THAT bad. I play on a Six Core AMD machine with a video card from 2009, that is pretty much inferior to most PC nowadays and I run ED Flawlessly, the game does not require top tier hardware.

A: is key factor

"With the new Mac and Xbox One players joining us we'll see new faces on the forums and we hope you’ll make them feel welcome"

'Mac' and 'feel welcome' in the same sentence, Amazing!

How PC development is held back? As far as I know, FD keep adding things to ED each month having big release.

Where did you read they will made a "big release" each month ? How can you know they didn't planned XBOX release since many month ? Then, how do you know that they didn't take in account XBOX development for their release rates ?

This is a very emotional time for me...

I am worried.

The PC game is far from stable. It's still getting basic features added, such as grouping... in a multiplayer game. I feel they might be overburdening their team with another platform right now (though it's probably another team from ScreamRide doing the porting, so not really stealing PC devs. I'd love if they could confirm that the bulk of XBO dev is being taken on by developers new to the Elite team, rather than those who have been already working on it. It's the only way I belive that PC development will not be affected).
Consoles often require a different development style. Console games play differently, due to controllers, due to demographic etc.
Consoles don't seem to have large demand for a game like this. I hope that, like space sims on PC, space sims on console are only not a thing because publishers THINK nobody wants them.

On the other hand.

It appears from the current interface that console has been already largely considered (since the kickstarter it was being considered by FDEV, this is not coming from nowhere).
FDEV have been doing, in my opinion, and excellent job in the direction the game is going so far. If it keeps moving that way, good!
More money and players (assuming any of the 15 people with an xbox one buy it) can only be good for the game, whether they are able to join the same instances or not.

I suppose my main concern is not the core idea of releasing the game on XBO, just that it might be a little early in development to be already working on another platform, before they have even gotten one down to a stable place. If I felt we had the base game complete, and they were moving towards expansions, then yeah, I would be much more comfortable. The fact that the game is still in active development, and they are pushing onto another platform before the game is even finished worries me (Finished in the sense that not even all of the base features are there. I don't care if they say it's launched, this game was not even eligible for launch before they add wings. It's a god damned multiplayer game for christs sake. Really looking forward to getting some buddies into a wing soon :) )

Why would Xbox version hold Elite Dangerous back? If anything it will push the game forward. Much bigger audience means more resources to develop the game further.

Take the money off them.

1.2 has put a bit of life and challenge into the game. So if it helps keep development going then sod it, sell it to the console kids.

Anyone who gets seriously hooked into it on the Xbox might want to go full hotas and 4k or a rift and end up in the PC version anyway.

1.2 being such a solid step forward has sweetened this news somewhat.

When I originally purchased Elite Dangerous during Alpha it was with the understanding that I was purchasing all future content updates.
For example planetary landings and such.

If that is still the case then I can't see being too upset over the XBox port. Personally I can list numerous games that I won't play multiplayer on the XBox due to whats known as the "Call of Duty Kids". I guess I can always unplug my head set though if that becomes an issue. Also, as long as this move doesn't affect current and new features I guess it's not a major disappointment.

I won't say I'm unhappy with the announcement, I will say I'm skeptical for now.

Sigh... Terrible news! Haven't seen a single game not being effected in a negative way by this!

And this is not what i invested in. If i had known, i would NEVER have supported this game.

There is a reason why a game like Star Citizen not going console ;)

Time to ebay my copy and forget all about this game ever existed.

[h=2]Will Xbox Hold PC Version Back?[/h]

A clever person stated on the subreddit regarding the Xbox release that "Also this path is guaranteed to end up in console limitations affecting what we get on pc. Maybe not right now but in a year or two there will be features that just aren't possible on console and that will mean they never end up on pc as well."

Will Xbox hold PC back or will the Xbox version have less features? Or is there another possible outcome?

Assuming those are the only possible outcomes, it seems obvious to me that Xbox will hold PC back rather than having less features. I say this because having different feature across different platforms would mean designing different features which in turn takes time and money.

The console cash will ensure frontiers future, plus the xbox pheasants get to play a real game for a change.

EDIT: Sorry for putting peasants, I changed it to pheasants, lol.

Is it time for FD to make this game work with Mantle? Everyone would win, the AMD users get better performance and it will work out of the box on the xbone too so less development/compromises for the developers.
