Newcomer / Intro This game is frustrating.

I've tried my hand at Trading but I have no clue how to do it and make any significant profite that is makes it almost pointless. All the programs and sites people suggest are either outdated or make no sense and only work if you have better ships. I can't do missions cause most time I'm thrown against ships that are vastly superior to my piece of crap sidewinder. I tried my hand at exploring but keep having one problem after another and can't make any kind profit off that.

I just don't get this game. I can't find a role in this game that will allow me to make money. I want to do combat but I need a way better ship cause right now I would just get slaughtered by everything I come buy. I keep sticking with this game but its been a month and I'm still in my sidewinder with only 30,000 credits. So Im doing horribly bad at this game.

Go to a nav point and wait. Let one of the local cops start fighting a wanted ship. As the wanted ship gets beaten down jump in and you will get the bounty when its gone.

you could always use that little search box at the top of this section

as far as third party trading tools go.... they ( mostly ) rely on YOU to input and keep the info up to date.... can't you do that even ?

I've got 2 nephews that play on a account between them ( sub 12 years old ) they sat down and worked out the basics ........ in a day ... when I asked them about how they got on they said... "we just re-started the account and wiped the save when we went wrong !!!! "

Simplesssssssssssssssssss !!!

Now sit yourself down..... and try again ...........CMDR

This is an interesting thing to try I myself hadn't even thought of that how cool :)

As far as i am aware this is the intent of the game design, to be meaningful through frustration and grief. Life is suffering.

The trend seems to be towards games with basic tutorials and then YOU have to learn the detail yourself or by group interaction... coming from other game genres where your nose is wiped can be a shock

I keep sticking with this game but its been a month and I'm still in my sidewinder with only 30,000 credits.

I do hope you aren't just sitting on those credits... if you want to do combat in your sidewinder you'll want to spend some cash to upgrade your ship for combat.

You're getting a lot of fanboy anger with your post. It's a shame those folks even came over to the newcomers forum. Sorry about that.

Lots of posts about ways to use the sidey for trading (grab rares etc).

That isn't how I went about things. I jumped right into combat, upgrading weapons/thrusters/shields a bit, until I had enough for an Eagle (hint: if you've upgraded your sidey you can make a little extra cash during the trade in by selling the upgraded components prior to trading it in for your next ship). From there it was cake, the Eagle is a scrappy fighter and had me in enough credits to buy a Viper (while keeping my Eagle) in just a couple days time.

There is a learning curve and your at the start of it.

Yeah, but to be so far down the learning curve after a month... Not all games are made for everyone.
OP - I can't offer you any better advice than all the suggestions already made. But I will say that it took me a few hours to buy my Adder. If you have read many guides then it seems that you're maybe lacking direction.
Forget trading in the Sidey, I made a lot of my early money dropping into USS and either picking up cargo I found and selling on the black market at an outpost or collecting bounties on easy ships. In a USS I found that if there was a wanted ship there was usually one or two system security hitting it, let them do the hard work then join the fight at the end and steal the bounty. Get an Adder or Hauler and start rare trading to make cash quickly.

The game does a poor job explaining itself to the player and many here do not seem to mind that, because they have been quite passionate about it. Casual players without this special connection to the franchise will be put off more easily, leave the game and give it bad reviews. Tool-Tips are a supereasy way to help a player get started. FD had better implement them for the X-Box release at the latest.

I have to admit that it would amuse me if the xbox version was just as opaque and unhelpful to new players. I might go to the xbox forums just to read the hate.

Instead of some theoretical stuff I'm just going to give you my real life experience, what got me running since I started a few weeks ago:

1. Started in my Sidey. Tried some bounty hunting (only other small ships, anything bigger I ran from), got a few credits for that but what really made a difference was doing missions, certainly smuggling slaves. That also give me some experience on both how the ship systems and stations and security works. Also for a very brief moment tried some trading, but that was hilariously stupid in a Sidewinder.
2. From the money I got from mission and some bounty hunting on the side I bought myself the Adder plus some extra cargo racks. Found out about rares trading from the forums, and worked out my own route that worked for me and my style (never been a fan of visiting 101 stations just to fill the cargo space...).
3. Got enough money from my 2+2 station rares route (2 stations on each side) to get a Cobra. Outfitted that one for combat and bounty hunting. So did that for a very brief time until I realised that I was not really interested in that. So parked up my Cobra and continued rares trading.
4. Bought a Lakon Type-6 soon enough, and grinded a bit more to outfit it for maximum jump range and durability (read exploring).
5. Explored. Now we're talking, that's fun for real! At least for me. So went on my first week long expedition and enjoyed it very much. It "only" gave about 1 mil credits, but that's fine for me. Don't really care about the money per se, unless there's something specific I want to buy.
6. Saw the exploration community goal at Lambda Andromedae, hooked up which gave me a 15% discount on the Asp.
7. Bought the Asp and sold the T6, and now doing some rares again to upgrade the last bits on the Asp for further exploring (wow, really underestimated the joy of maneuverability after a week in deepspace with the mini-van).

All in all I'm worth around 12-15 mil in assets right now, and quite happy with that. Had some problems understanding how to get around and make a living at first, just as you. Just don't be in a hurry to get the biggest and badest ship or largest bank account, do baby steps. At least that most enjoyable for me. You don't need a lot of credits at the beginning, it's when you got it all up and running it starts to cost in maintenance and upgrades. At the time I'm in a Python or other more expensive ship I've gained a fair amount of experience just ejoying the game instead of grinding my boots off.

Edit: now, when I say "really made a difference" at the first point, I'm talking about 10-50k credits. Feels like nothing now, but then it was a fourtune and actually gave me progress.

Great post,. +1. This is the way play Elite. Those of us who play this way should shout louder. Maybe then, newcomers to the game might get a better feel for the emmense enjoyment this fantastic game has to offer.

Funny thing is, I believe stories like Ellen_K's are quite similar across the board of players who are in the game for the long run:

0.) Why buy the game? Because Space!
1.) Had a Sidewinder. Did stuff. I seriously do not remember what exactly. A little bit of everything, with a lot of goofing around and creeping towards the galactic core. Until I could afford an...
2.) Adder. Which was on the second day of playing. Traded some, started wandering further corewards through the populated regions, did a lot of NAV and RES bounty hunting and went for a high-tech system as close a possible to the core. Back then, travelling 150 LY seemed like a challenge. Didn't like the high-tech system I went to, but, lucky enough, I found another one next door that's great and has been my "home" ever since. Bought a Cobra. (Four or five days in.)
3.) First exploration tour: Only goal: Find something to put your name on. Did so. Two hours there and back. One of the most defining and beautiful moments of the game for me, by the way.
4.) Itching to get out again, second exploration tour: Reach the roof. Did go as far as the Cobra could take me. Five hours there and back. Space is very black up there.
5.) Took a short break and did some rares and regular trading and NAV/RES-BH so I could finally afford an ADS. Went for my first...
6.) ...multiple-session exploration. Took a decidedly touristy 4-day-route to Witch Head, Orion Nebula, Gamma Columbae (okay, maybe not that touristy), Pencil Nebula, the Musca Dark region near the Coal Sack and returned home. Put my name on a lot of stars during the Orion-Musca leg, but it was more of an endurance test than anything else. Learned that I have severe difficulties leaving my ship out in the cold for the night. Every log-in was a little moment of "are you still there?". Got into the habit of parking in planetary rings.
7.) Decided to take it slow and work myself towards an Asp. Started to get interested in the local background simulation and decided to run along with it. Bought a T6 in addition to my Asp for some nice and relaxing (and profitable) trading.
8.) Saw the Lambda Andromedae community goal.
9.) Did way too much rares trading. Not doing that again, can't get any fun out of it.
10.) Got into the top 70 percentile at Lambda - real life cut my ambitions for the top 40 short - and bought the Discount Asp. (Said goodbye to my T6 when collecting it.) Brought her home.
Current situation:
11.1) Am a few millions short of the exploration ship I want to make out of her. Do not care right now. Simply having fun with the beast - just playing the local background simulation, trading, doing missions, boosting inside the station for the sound of it. Sometimes taking the Cobra out for long-range activities. (The A5 FSD for the Asp is among the few millions I still need.)
11.2.) Have a time limit for getting the Asp ready for extended exploration: I want to leave one week after the official Wings release.
Future:
12.) Pilgrimage to Sag A*, after that, go North-East and than follow the Perseus arm widdershins to its very tip. Will then try to jump the arms inward and reach Alnilam on my way back home.

Already got way, way more out of this game than it and the cheap HOTAS I bought for it cost me. Still can't find, for the life of me, anything that's frustrating. (The absence of QTEs might have something to do with that.) The fact that Elite Dangerous is not very accessible for casual gamers is not a statement about its quality, only about it's target customers.

I don't know but I'm done with the game. I have stuck with this game far longer then I normally would. No one can understand how deeply frustrating it is to constantly be slapped down. Everything and I mean everything I have tried has ended in disaster. I find one thing that netted me any kind of profit. I had 43k made from bounties. Not a lot to all of you but thats most money I have made in an hour then in the past three weeks. Then as I am on my way back to turn in the bounties I get interdiction by a Master and blown out of the sky; good by bounties. I am sick of this this game just keeps slapping me down and I'm tired of it. It's not worth the aggravation. You guys have fun playing this pile of garbage but I'm finished.

Watching youtube videos made by knowledgeable cmdrs is great fun and you learn a lot.

This isnt about learn from videos or lack of understanding of how game works. I get that I know what I can and can't do. But when you listen to all these players talk about how much money there making and at every turn your getting rapped and destroyed it gets to be a bit much. This morning was final straw. The game basically dangled all this money in front of me and said here you go and then just as I had it took it away from me and now im back to squar one almost. How the hell am I supposed to get any where money wise if the game is going to be that cheap. Im sorry I don't like this game. I hate it beyond words. I have tried to get in to it but I cant because every time I start to I get slapped down by some cheap crap. It's not worth it. I am going to tell every one I know to stay away from this game it's not worth the money.

Well if you're doing that bad, I'm affraid we can't do anything for you... I'm sure you will find other games that suit you better.

Do you mean that the average Xbox player is more stupid than the average PC player and unable to read/understand a game guide ? :)

Then there is no hope. You can't label the game bad though just because you didn't get on with it.

May I suggest Eve Online? :p

I hate point and click games. I like the style of Elite Dangerous it's why Ive stuck with as long as I have. But I've been getting my butt handed to me from the start. I can't make any lead way. Every time I try I get slapped down. How would you feel if after three weeks you where still in same stupid ship you started and had flat out no really money. Every time you started to make money game throws something at you that ultimatly leads to your death and you end up right back where you started. Imagin how frustrating that would be. Right now I'm hoping Chris Roberts has better game and can offer me a decent fair shot at actually doing something other then lots of dying. I'm sorry for rant but you don't understand how frustrating it is to have 43k Cr in your hand and that be the most money you made the entire time you played only to have it snatched out of your hands because you ran out of oxygen just as you got to star port. All because you were attacked by a Master. I mean for crying out loud throw me a bone and give me some sort of fighting chance but the game has yet to give me that. So why continue playing really. I don't get what all of you see in it.

Have you considered the Solo mode until you get a bit more confidence in the game?
