Swearing in game

Jabokai. LOL. If you've ever been in the military that is pretty close, grin. OK maybe not as much as it use to be. Guys in war facing death cuss. Much like smoking or whatever. A attempt to appear tough, a defense mechanism if you like. It is what the majority of society does, so is it realistic? Yeah pretty much so. Do I advocate it constantly? NO. As you can see from my post I am capable of quite colloquial speech. But I am also capable of anger or my desire to express a point sometimes with colorful speech if you will.
I have been told I'm a very kind person and I do try. It is my nature. But I am human and capable of of anger like anyone else. Read history, some of the biographies of them include them using colorful language. Do I think it belittles them to do so? No. I think it is just life happening. ;)

I was in the Army for 4 yrs - and now work at a school - where swearing is a big No No... - Trust me - I will be swearing at my Screen if I get blown up in battle - but I will not turn that swearing into Electrons and pass them into the Internet.

Sparticus i respect your decision and your opinion. I have no problem with it at all. We all have choices to make in life and must live with the consequences of those choices. I have made mine and am living with them now. If Frontier bans it in game I will be disappointed in the decision but will live with it and continue to play the game. The idea of obscenity has been debated for thousands of years. Everyone's opinion on it differs greatly. Cursing is one of those debates. To quote someone "I'll know it when I see it". I had a good friend give the best definition of what perverted is. "Perverted is anything you do that I don't". I realize we need guidelines because there may indeed be some younger people playing it. So I have no problem with filters provided they can be turned off because I am a adult. And I have no problem with a ignore button, in fact I think that's a good idea. But deciding what is "right" and "wrong" for people is a slippery slope indeed. Censorship is not one I would want to try to define for sure, lol. Take care mate. :D

It's not swearing itself that is the problem - it's the crappy nature of it from badly written fiction.

It is never, ever, ever done right! The Carrier Command remake was a perfect example of how not to do it.

Swearing in voice and player-player coms will be perfectly acceptable to those who choose to allow it, including me, but please, no awfully scripted NPC's screaming expletives for no reason.

It just sounds totally false and laughable.

Perhaps we could invent an Elite Language - all has to be space based.

Will you just veer off.
Go Implode yourself.
Go and get holed.
Get holed.
There is more pressure in the vacuum of space then there is brains in your helmet.
May you eat lots of space beans - and produce a gas giant in your space suit.

I always liked the Father Ted route, it just fitted for some reason, I actually think out and out swearing would have spoiled it.

The N-word is almost certainly going to be auto-censored to N*******n.

Heh. That should be added to the filter along with;

Sandbox
Immersion
Twitch
PVP/PVA/PVE
Carebear

etc. etc.

Might make people explain themselves better instead of resorting to jargon..

And avoid many misunderstandings.

:D

Haha.. like where this is going... a swear filter that replaces common swear words with game related substitutes :D

I used to post on a Firefly forum, all the swear words were translated into a chinese equivelent.

Worked better than that go shi made-up fey wu from Battlestar and Farscape.

The Browncoat in me would highly appreciate that, but I doubt it would work here, since EDs background doesn't support it.

Yeah, I know. Sadface.
Subsitute swearwords really work well though, and non-english words just seem less jarring than made-up words or the random symbols from the top row of my keyboard.

Maybe if they create their own verbals like..

The Thriking engines blown

That guy has a face like a thargoids spentical ...
Dunno what it means but id shoot him :)

They did that in the remakes of Battlestar Galactica - 'frak' - which seemed to let them get away with it.

My view on swearing is that if one uses it very rarely it can have a real impact especially if people aren't used to you using it. Perhaps it could be used like that in game. However, I generally don't see how using vulgar four letter language is really that beneficial to telling a story.

I might expect a some mild cursing from characters in a game to offer a bit of realism and depth - if they met difficult circumstances or were really frustrated.

I'm afraid swearing is generally a result of limited vocabulary

I loved the Firefly "solution" - not only did it get around the issues, it actually just sounded really cool. Shiny!
