And so the thread degenerates.
How can it come as any surprise that the pirate community is viewed as griefers by the trading/pve community when we get words like "salty" being thrown about and smack talk of one sort or another. I've recently left a heavy PvP game because of just this kind of attitude, all from players who rather than enjoy PvP with each other, would spend more time causing trouble for PvE players trying to quietly go about their business - with some lame justification that PvE players needed a kick up the backside to get into PvP.
As soon as I see this kind of stuff, it's a turn off. If it's a game then this kind of unpleasantness has no place. Salty, sodium, QQ and so on all just wrong and the kind of language which does indeed drive "carebears" to the solo or private groups.
Should this game have pirating? Yes - of course. But it's broken at the moment, in a number of ways of which the three most fundamental are
1: Pirates need money too
There should be decent scope for pirating NPCs just as well as other players. Its ridiculous that a Commander can't make a reasonable living hitting NPC freighters, they should be able to. We certainly could in Elite 1983. As a side benefit, it makes it possible for people to play at pirate exclusively on PvE terms if that's what they want to do - this game is supposed to cater for all sorts.
2: Pirating should carry a risk.
Being able to fly to the nearest outpost and pay off the fine is stupid and a big part of the problem. That's fine for hitting NPCs, but if you want to give traders a hard time there should be a risk with a bounty that can't be disappeared with a few credits. Traders really resent that someone can kill them or take their stuff with no consequences whatsoever, barring a relatively minor fee. If pirating players caused a bounty which couldn't be so easily erased, then the victims might feel they have the possibility for revenge.
These two changes keep pirates in the cash they need and softens the blow to the victims - and by the way, make the bounty hunter profession more interesting too, actively promoting PvP between two combat centric player groups.
