I was wrong about the DK2 and ED!

I took delivery of the DK2 many, many months ago. Have barely used it until this weekend, preferring the clarity and graphical fidelity of a big screen TV and a TrackIr. And yes, I love that the TrackIr is wireless and I can actually see my keyboard when playing. Of course, the big deal about the Oculus is immersion and the VR experience, despite the subpar graphics quality/heavy pixelation...

But I played with the Rift for many hours yesterday and today - and despite it's graphics shortcomings - I'm now a big fan. I spent probably an hour just sitting around in a RES watching other players pew pew. I gawked at planets and interiors of stations. It's just so awesome. I'd done all this before, but for some reason this weekend felt different. Perhaps I just managed to "get over" the subpar graphics - I'm not sure.

I now can't wait for the CV1, assuming it's 1440p or better. The resolution really needs improving, and I'd love to be able to take it on/off or flip the visor up/down without having to tighten the headset band, and to make texting in-game easier. But these are minor gripes. Did I mention that it's awesome?

And again I'm jealous because I have never experienced the OR. At least we know now that before the year is over, we will have at least one device on the market - actually good to know that we will probably have a choice, that will put some preassure on prices. So anyways, hoping for a release rather sooner than later because I'm waiting for this for a long time now :)

I'm the same. My DK2 is sitting in the corner of the room, barely touched. I think I used it for 10 minutes and got bored a couple months ago.

I've been considering selling it but I guess I should give it another go. The thing which bothers me the most about it is the reduced field of view. It's like looking through a helmet.

Give it a whirl. Also - I don't get the "helmet effect" with mine, so my be worth fiddling with your settings. Also, I found Resource Extraction Sites are what turned me around on the DK2. Also, I upscaled my resolution which helped with graphics quality - I selected 2560 vs 1440p from the Nvidia control panel which did improve graphical fidelity a little bit. Still nowhere near as clear as 1080p on a big screen TV, but every little bit helps. Also, I set my galaxy map key binds up so that I can finally navigate the map using my throttle/stick/pedals, which also made things a lot more enjoyable.

Do you know how to make the text clearer? It was really difficult reading the text on the panels - I had to like, lean in towards them. I guess that's the 2560 thing right? I can't play if I can't read the text.

Also are you using the latest NVidia drivers because if I recall I had to downgrade mine slightly to get it to work in January.

Correct setup is incredibly important, especially IPD. 3 months into using mine and only realized last week that an IPD of 55 works best for me. I also use a blueish HUD colour, text is perfectly fine now. Default HUD colour is horrible in the rift.

Check out this post - https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=121355

Here is my HUD colour settings

<LocalisationName>Standard</LocalisationName>
<MatrixRed> 0, 0.11, 0.23 </MatrixRed>
<MatrixGreen> 0, 1, 0 </MatrixGreen>
<MatrixBlue> 1, 0, 0 </MatrixBlue>

latest drivers work fine. back in jan NV borked the drivers for VR but they are fixed now.
I have no issues reading any text in the game, so make sure you set up correctly, and that you have contact lenses in assuming you need them (I cant use the rift without). It may be you can "get by" without perfect vision in the real world, but as you know the rift is not ideal with regards to resolution so "on the edge" eyesight may be tipping you over the edge.

failing that however if you change your HUD colours to green (detailed in other threads) it effectively almost doubles the resolution of the text.

The latest Nvidia driver is working fine.
There's a lot you can do to improve video quality and readability of the text in game and some users have made some great guides for this in the VR sub forum.

I can't go back to screen, the OR is just so much more intense. I do feel though it doesn't lend itself very well to trading. There is a disconnect between yourself and the real world and so anything that involves much use of the keyboard or writing notes or studying the Galaxy map is a bit of a turn off.

That being said, when it's setup right and with a HOTAS and good sound system and then you get yourself in a battle, it's pretty much the most awesome experience i've ever had with any game ever.

I wasn't impressed with DK2 at first, but then:
- got optician to measure my IPD
- spent hours adjusting the various settings and swapping lenses
- started using my specs
- changed HUD colour to green

It's like night and day. Once I'm into my game, the reduction in clarity vs monitor doesn't bother me and I no longer get screen door issues. It's given me some of the most incredible experiences in my 30 years of gaming - mostly courtesy of ED.

Without the DK2 I'd have walked away from this game by now. Let's be honest, there really isn't that much interesting content in this game and multiplayer interaction barely exists.
But the immersion you get when using the DK2 is so fascinating that even boring tasks are fun again. There is a totally differenct sense of scale you get with it, planets and stations really look big now and every station approach is spectacular. I even tried mining and actually enjoyed it (for a little while). I also learned that resolution isn't everything - the low resolution doesn't bother me much any more.

Sure, that wow-effect will eventually wear off, too.

I would not trade my DK2 for even a 4K screen. For the first 10 minutes, the resolution bothered me, but after that I didn't care. The sense of *volume* is incredible. Even with the beauty of a 4K screen, it's still flatter than a sheet of paper. Only the Rift (or technology like it) will give you this sense of volume.

It also probably helps that I can touch type - I don't have any trouble using the keyboard within the Rift. (Learned to touch type on a BBC Micro with some touch typing software it had :)). I also have a Unicomp buckling spring keyboard (basically IBM Model M). The great thing about the IBM/Unicomp keyboard is that it was built for touch typing so there's various hints on the keyboard, not just the thing on the F and J keys, but the shape of the caps lock key where I can just slide my little finger to find the home row. I've remapped the keys I need to get to quickly to be easy to find just by feel and location - such as landing gear numpad+, weapons out numpad enter, launch heatsink capslock, so not being able to see the keyboard is even less of an issue.

I don't know why people are having trouble with field of view, I find the DK2 has a MUCH wider FoV than a monitor, unless you sit with your nose 4 inches from the monitor.
