Newcomer / Intro Kill Warrant Scanner. How do you guys use it?

So I can definitely see the advantage of getting one. The only problem I have is I have it bound to my secondary firing group so my hard points deploy when I use it. It is also a pain having to hold down the secondary fire button. On top of that I can not put another weapon as my secondary. Just curious if I am missing something or how is the KWS better used?

I have my KWS set up on trigger 2 in a second fire group, along with my lasers on trigger one. I can start to strip off the shields while scanning. When the scan is complete, I just switch over to fire group 1 which changes out the KWS to multi cannons. Seems to work for me. Your mileage may vary. Have fun out there.

I've just started using one (yesterday). Unfortunately I've had to go with the smallest one as I'm at 99% power which means I'm often taking hits while waiting for it to finish. I have my first two Fire Groups with all my weapons (with cannon in FG 1 and missiles in FG 2), then one with just Adv Disc Scanner in FG 3, heat sinks in FG 4 and lastly the KWS in FG 5 (plus lasers as primary fire). I just switch FG afterwards (either immediately if being fired upon, or if not, after I've checked the info in the side panel that it's necessary). Netted quite a bit of extra creds.

You can't get around having to deploy your hardpoints. Having one with the longest range would be safer as well as quicker (as the target can be kept within the scan circle more easily). It's worth having a play with one to see if you like it.

I tried it in an Anarchy system at the NavPoint and USS points (plus any interdictions), but I imagine for most of the time in the future I'll use it at a non-Anarchy RES point, only scanning the Wanted ships. I seemed to make more at the RES points without the KWS than I did in the Anarchy system at the NavPoint, so for me it'll be used to sweeten the deal for some kills rather than an essential use-every-time piece of kit.

First Fire Group: Lasers and Discovery scanner
Second Fire group: Lasers and KWS
Third Fire Group: Lasers and Ammunition based weapon (usually Cannon or Multi-Cannon)

You are aware of Fire Groups, yes?

That is probably what I am missing. I need to figure out how to change fire groups. I have a Saitek x-55 and am using Aussies setup so I am pretty sure it has the option binded somewhere. I assume there is a setting to select fire groups? Right now I just have primary and secondary fire buttons that I have used.

I jump from fire group 1 (FSD Interdictor and KWS) back to fire group 2 weapons main + secondary. Scan first while they're deciding if you are hostile then collect bounty in three facts and get rich quicker.

First Fire Group: Lasers on primary, Cannons on secondary.
Second Fire Group: KWS on primary, Discovery Scanner on secondary if equipped.

Utilize your firegroups, they are essential for managing utilities.

There are settings to bind a key to cycle fire groups.

All KWS' takes the same time to scan; 10 seconds.
Higher rated ones just have longer range.

Where on the screen does it show which fire group you have active? Was curious so I know where to look for that at.

Thanks for all the great advice!

maybe worth mentioning: You don't need an extra Fire Group for utilities that work only in SuperCruise. Ship's smart enough to enable stuff in context.

I have all my scanners and FSI on a single key and firegroup. OK I get the Fog Horn while using the KWS, but saves having to keep on switching.

I'm not sure whether that was for my benefit or the OP's.

I had to choose a low power KWS which meant it has the shortest range of 2.5km, which also means I'm in range of the other ships' guns when using it.

BTW, as an FYI for the other posters, there is another thread on these forums in which someone warns against mixing scanners as there is/was a bug which affected them (I think it referred specifically to the KWS too). That could have been fixed but I used separate FGs to be on the safe side.

+1 This ^^ is my preferred set up. Always have full gun Fire Group set on the one after KWS so you can switch with a single hit of the button.

First Fire Group: Lasers on primary, Cannons on secondary.
Second Fire Group: KWS on primary, Discovery Scanner on secondary if equipped.

I'm not disagreeing with the set up, it's personal choice, but I'd just like to point out to OP that personally I have trouble with KWS on primary. I have a habit of forgetting which group I'm on after an intense battle and end up blasting lasers at my next target by accident. Can get messy if your not careful.

I usually switch fire group after each kill for exactly that reason.

Where on the hub does the fire group display? I noticed I am using Aussies bindings and he does have on swithc setup for that. Can't wait to try it out tonight?

up the top of the HUD brackets - mine always says either Secondary 1 + Primary 1, or Secondary 2 + Primary 2, so that's groups 1 and 2 respectively

i have an Adv. Discovery Scanner and my KWS both on the secondary of the first fire group. yes i hear the ADS's BRRRRrrrrrrrt every time i use the KWS, but i'm used to it and it's a real simple setup. group 2 has chaff on secondary along with the extra MCs on primary

I've got my weapons and KWS on First Fire Group, mouse buttons 1 and 2 respectively. Then my Disco Scanner on Second Fire Group button 2. So my button 2 is always a scanner and I don't get confused.

My execution is to find a Wanted pilot, get close enough to start a scan, and with a couple seconds left in the scan I open fire.
