Newcomer / Intro Problems seeing Saitek ST profilfes in ED

I've been having an issue getting the Saitek profile to carry into ED. I did a search on the forum (several actually), but didn't see an answer so I'm hoping I'm just making a silly new user error and one of the veterans can help me out.

I picked up a Saitek x52 Pro (specifically to play ED), got in game, flew around, all is great.

Before I invested too much time in the control scheme, I wanted to use a Saitek profile to take advantage of the "mode" dial so I opened the profile editor and got to work. I setup Mode 1 to be "Flight Mode", assigned some test buttons to the POV hat, saved the profile and launched ED in a window (so I could see/edit the Saitek software while in game). In ED, I started with the Saitek x52 Pro control setting and remapped the keys I was trying to bind to the hat. I also made sure the keys assigned wasn't assigned to any other keys in the ED profile. All good. Launched into the trainer, and "whoosh" - it didn't work. The hat didn't perform any of the key bindings I set for it. I clicked on the Saitek app, clicked the hat again, and saw the key I bound.

Hmm.

I ran the test mode in the Saitek software... it returns the keys without problem. Just for giggles, I opened notepad... the key presses appear.

For additional testing, I tried the same steps inside ED using the "Generic Joystick" configuration, then the "Custom" configuration. No joy in either configuration.

Just for an extra bit of checking, I downloaded and reinstalled the drivers and software (something I found on another forum). No change.

I'm sure this is something simple that I'm overlooking or not setting correctly in ED. I haven't owned a HOTAS in years, nor do I have any other games I can really test this on (at least not flight related). How do I make the profile carry over into the game?

Some Background Info:

Windows 8.1 x64
Saitek ST software version: 7.0.34.109
Test mapping:
POV HAT Up, Down, Left, Right = W, S, A, D

Any suggestions, pointers, etc. would be most appreciated.

Thanks!

I think the game and the combat demo keep their config files in separate folders. Having the setup in the main game won't affect the setup in the combat training, and vice versa.

Thanks, Monkey.

If I'm using the software that came with the Saitek to program the HOTAS, shouldn't it work in either game mode?

The software itself seems pretty unreliable though. Its crashed on me more than once, and profiles that worked in my testing last night don't work now. I wouldn't be shocked if there was a software issue at this point (doing the same thing yields different results). Its a shame, the stick itself is really smooth and I'm hesitant about sending it back because I've heard horror stories about getting a controller that doesn't stick from Saitek at about 1 in 3. I've opened a support ticket with Saitek, but I'm starting to think this is going to head back to Amazon.

I'm going to try another software uninstall and reload and see if it improves.

The point I'm making is that the two aspects of the game are basically two different clients.

If you set options in one it doesn't carry over to the other. Programming the stick itself isn't really necessary unless you want to tale advantage of the mode switch on the right of the hat switches/head of the stick.

Since it works in one part of the game and results in key presses, it's pretty clear that the problem is not with the stick.

Just for clarity, you have plugged the stick in before you launched the client and set you key bindings in the game client, haven't you?

the100thmonkey the control settings carried over in my case. I have an x55 & instead of using the saitek software I bound my keys in game (in the single player combat training) these bindings carried through to the main game. BrownSamurai: The saitek software is a bit fiddly but once you get used to it you'll be up & running. Once you have finished setting it up (within the saitek software) have you clicked the little blue crosshair icon to load the profile onto the stick? You can also load the profile onto the stick from the taskbar icon for the stick by right clicking & a list of saved profiles should appear. Once a profile is loaded the taskbar icon will change colour from white to green.

Hope that helps :)

The profile loads and the name of the profile appears on the MFD. The assigned buttons just aren't transferring into the game.

I have been looking for some documentation better than what's on Saitek's site - I know folks use it, so it must work at some point. I've got a second X52 coming in for this weekend (straight up, not pro) and will see if it works any better (weeknights after work is just rough for troubleshooting). If not, I may just eat the upgrade and jump to CH (and lose the twist stick).

I heard the stick on the X55 was pretty tight, ArcherRob but that the throttle was butter. Any comment?

Ah OK, I like the x55 but I was quite lucky when I ordered it: It was the day after boxing day last year, they screwed up & sent me 3! So after unboxing the first one I found that the twist/rudder axis kept jumping about even with no control input. I then very carefully opened another the twist/rudder was fine on this one but the pov hat switch kept clicking & felt like it was half broken from the get go. So onto the third one & luckily that was fine.

I tested all the buttons on the stick & throttle. All seemed OK but I managed to overlook the mouse nipple thingy. The other sticks had been sent back at this point so I couldn't just swap it out as I had with the sticks; the problem is that the nipple bit is too far to the left & it stops against the housing, its nowhere near good enough for fine control (the very thing you need in a mouse) in the other directions anyhow so I don't use it.

All in all though I like it but I have this nagging feeling that I should have chucked a few quid more at it & gone with the warthog.

hi I too had similar probs with my x52 pro and windows8.1 , I found that either a reboot or clearing the profile from being loaded in at startup and then re selecting it cured the problem. It seems to retain the original profile in memory and not apply the changed one if that makes sense. All is now good with mine so give it a whirl. All the best
