Suggested changes for mining

Hi guys

I posted this elsewhere but thought this would be the best place to post it (given its frequented by the actual devs). There are so many posts asking for the mining part of ED to be improved compared to the drudgery that it is now. So, here are my suggested changes:

1. Use of collection drones or some sort of short range tractor beam or some sort of magnet to pick up rock fragments - anything but cargo scooping.
2. Development of some sort of mineral scanner (short range if you have to) which tells you:
A. what is in the asteroid; and
B. how much is in the asteroid. eg. 50% Gold, 130% Indium (ie. % of Ton)

Then you can decide whether to mine or not eg. if an asteroid has 130% Indium and 75% Silver...may not be worth it.

3. You can go further to a longer range mineral scanner ie. something that you can scan a whole asteroid belt with (possibly similar to the exploration scanner?). This would be an upgrade.
4. Ability to 'mark' asteroids so you're not constantly sampling the same one
5. Online or older version of the price of minerals - very important. You need to know the value of what you're mining. What happens if there's suddenly a demand for say Indium close by? Mining is primary industry which is about meeting demand.
6. Ability to acquire and install mining droids or something that will mine asteroids for you ie. you set up and leave. (risk is that someone else finds/raids what is produced).
7. (in the future) Ability to create some sort of mining colony on a planet or even an asteroid belt
2. creating a mining specific class of ship (eg. think that big Romulan sucker from Star Trek) ie. either an actual miner or cargo vessel with inbuilt bins + refinery. Doesn't have to be fast but big and strong.
3. Ability to send out probes into 'deep space' (hey it IS the year 3300 right?) that do system mineral scans and report back with data (may take weeks, some may not report at all)
4. Introduction of rare but highly priced minerals that you can only get via mining
5. The ability to actually create jobs yourself eg. need escort of mining ship from x to y. I'd happily pay 20k in credits for an escort back to a major station if I was carrying 100T of paladium.

I do like the idea of little automated mining colonies that you have to set up (eg. like transporting cargo to the planet say) and provide security for on a planet. Yes I know, planetary landings aren't here yet, but something to think of.

Mining can be a lot of fun and SHOULD be lucrative - why do you think we have miners IRL? it should be dirty and hard work..but the payoffs should more than compensate, compared to something as 'clean' as trading (which should be the lowest of profits). Mining can also be risky which it currently is (getting interdicted, etc).

Tractor beam.. Now there's an original idea.

..oh wait.

For the love of god please stop trying to dumb down mining to a "press X to collect ore" pointless and worthless task.

Personally I dislike trading, I find it mind-numbingly boring ..BUT.. I don't whine about trading and ask them to make it simpler.

Don't like mining? Fine.. Go trading, bounty hunting, pirating..whatever

Mining is the forgotten little brother in Elite - it needs some love.
The OP has a few good suggestions - Devs take note and make a FREE update to mining. I am one who has paid for upgrades but that one should definitely be free to all.

Mining is as dumbed down as it gets currently. The dev who created it said it is boring and a place holder, hopefully some of his ideas or better are implemented.

If I had credit for every post like yours on here, I'd be able to afford an Anaconda. If you care to read and think about what I'm suggesting, its about improving the whole mining process. I mean...its 2015, do you see REAL miners chip off a rock, then pick it up, then chip off a rock, then pick it up, then chip off a rock, then pick it up, then chip off a rock, then pick it up, then chip off a rock, then pick it up (do you get my point? I can go on).

Yes mining is a placeholder, however they need to do something about it sooner rather than later. Trading already works...bounty hunting works, missions work (sort of), but mining? I like mining. Others like mining. Maybe if they implemented some of my suggested changes above, maybe even YOU might like mining. Wouldn't that be a sight to see?

Suggestions belong in the suggestions forum.

Tractor beams bad idea, cargo scooping could be a bit more forgiving though, like maybe a 1 meter range tractor beam utility to assist scooping would be okay.

c'mon mate, really? have you done two hours straight of cargo scooping and still thought it was a good idea at the end? This is supposed to be a game ie. something to be enjoyed. cargo scooping tiny rocks out of space is NOT fun.

That's a most helpful and constructive post .. full marks .. if you don't like it just do something else. At least the OP is trying to be positive and offer some constructive suggestions to improve the game without whining as you have done, and on that note, I agree that Mining needs some love. Hopefully we will get some improvements soon to have it more as a valid career path.

Mining has been pretty much ignored, even since the beta. Except after the last few updates it is even worse. Mining is a tedious and time consuming endeavour and the profits per hour should reflect this. Good mineral deposits should be hard to find, at least the good ones, but when you do find the motherload it should pay off big time. The way it is atm no miner in real life would bother and as this is supposed to be a game it needs to be made more interesting and profitable.

I loved mining, but now? Meh.

I'll never mine, but....

Would like to see the possibility of tracking down very rewarding minerals (afaik this happens but not very often) to make it more exciting, oh my goodness I found a res with... kinda after that gold rush feeling.e.g yellow minerals!

Not sure about drones, but here is an idea in the meantime...

1. Wing up with a combat pilot, get him to equip a couple of mining lasers, too
2. Get him to do the shooting whilst you scoop and refine. This should mean you don't keep needing to back off and shoot wasting time.
3. He can also keep pirates at bay, sharing the bounty making it a little more profitable for both.
4. Go back to the station, sell (and make trade dividends) so you both get paid.

Might need to balance profits for the other pilot with a few canister drops i guess.

Might not work, but I'd happily give it a go with someone with a mining vessel.

Then you can decide whether to mine or not eg. if an asteroid has 130% Indium and 75% Silver...may not be worth it.

This my #1 gripe with mining. It's all about a very small selection of the most expensive metals and everything else pays too little to be worth the time. I am not sure how to alleviate this, but I would be more inclined to go mining from time to time if I could make a decent profit bringing home, like, a pile of aluminium.

Plus, I want mining in ice rings, and RES inside ice rings. They looks so good and yet are little more than eye candy at the moment.

I agree with the OP.
And having to cargo scoop as an miner is just stupid.

Mining needs some serious work.

We've already worked out how to make a rudimentary tractor beam IRL fast forward to this game's timeline and well it would make sense to equip them. Personally I would rather see little drones dancing around my ship picking up fragments. As long as that's the only part that's automated. I do like the hands on approach that elite has but that gets ridiculous.
Another idea would be cargo transferring between wingmates just like with seeking luxuries just add a third option to transfer to: list of commanders in wing where you could jettison, get close and beam it over. Along with this would be the ability to set a cut of profits in the functions tab. With this you could have a type 9 or conda with a big refinery and mining lasers and have other players be the "drones" scooping it up as the T9 cuts it loose then beaming it over. With being able to set a cut between wing mates this would be profitable for all parties.
As far as the tractor beam goes maybe just something that just stops the target from moving then lines it up with your cargo scoop.
After that to bring it up to par to support a wing and keep it as a viable income source they would also have to either:
A. make each chunk a ton worth of material maybe not all the same material but still a ton of material.
B. Dramatically increase the base price of metals and minerals
C. Increase the amount of ore in each asteroid.
D. All of the above.

I really like the idea of a dedicated mining barge though. Something like the T9's bigger brother, heavily shielded and high hull values with only 1 huge hardpoint for a class 4 mining laser. Said mining laser would be the only way to mine rarer items like panitrite. Maybe a couple class 1 hardpoints for a very lackluster defense. Would pretty much require a wing to support it.

So there's my constructive idea for the day.
its time for more coffee.
