[Voice comms] Push-to-talk option?

Right now, the game has a mute button. So when you use voice comms, everyone can hear you UNLESS you press that mute button. This is good when you engage conversations with friends and wingmen, however it can be a bother if you extensively use voice recognition software like Voice Attack. Nobody wants to hear you say "launch countermeasures", "power shields", "select highest threat", etc. all the time when you fight together for example. So right now, every time you want to issue a voice command (which is very often for some people, me included), you must remember to press the mute button.

One very easy and convenient solution would be an option to invert the mute function for those who want to. Basically, with this option checked, once the voice comms would be active with another player, they would only hear you IF you pressed the push-to-talk button. Basically like a walkie-talkie. Personnaly, as a VA user, I'd really like such a function to be implemented ; it feels a lot more natural to me to press a button to talk to wingmen, rather than to press one before I issue voice commands (which would arguably defeat the whole point of having voice commands in the first place).

Also, shy people would probably prefer the safety of not having everyone hear them all the time, unless they want to say something to their fellow commanders. And maybe (not sure about that one) this could save a little bantwidth?

Pretty please FD ? :D

Makes absolute sense. Most comms systems are push to talk, hence the PTT label.
Have both options with a toggle in the control options to select whether push to talk or push to mute.

Would help me as I have to shout to get the audio to kick in and stay transmitting..... never have this problem with mumble/ts/vent

Buddy is having the same issue

That might be because the gate effect needs some tweaking to be more sensitive to low inputs.

My friend is having the same problem just now. I jumped on here to find an answer but to no avail. He's getting the problem where a loud noise is required to activate the mic. Sadly, there's not mic sensitivity in the options.

Surprisingly the voice is working OK for me but that's probably because my mic is very sensitive. Not saying his isn't, but it's just not working and made him rage quit the game. Back to me playing alone for now again. HAHA.

Come one, no one else is interested in a PTT option? Make your voice heard if you want a chance to see this option make it to the game! :)

Can you not set the mute option to toggle? Then push once to start talking/once to finish?

(Genuine question, I don't use voice in game)

It's 20-freaking-15, how have developers not learnt yet that it's a TERRIBLE idea to release Voice Comms without Push To Talk?! I don't want to have to hear the people I'm playing with argue with their mother/girlfriend/wife, eat food, or just breath heavily, and I'm sure they don't want to listen to me do the same. PTT should be a basic feature of any voice communication (and should be enabled by default).

I just started a thread on this as well on the discussion forums. I have a good friend I play with all the time, and he has a mechanical keyboard, and I cannot stress how much I "LOVE" hear his clicking and clacking of his keyboard. Please reverse this push to mute to push to talk.

I agree with the OP 100%.

Even if you're not using VA, it makes more sense to have PTT so that wingmen or interlocutors are not subjected to every extraneous noise that breaks the squelch. Giving a mode toggle keeps everyone happy.

Gets my vote, I have so many voice commands its almost like having a conversation with the ship when I'm in combat. PTT FTW!

I use Voice Attack as well, and need this PTT for wing comms. Please implement this when you are able Frontier.

Cheers!

Push to Mute is telephone behaviour and the provided communications within the game is not good enough* to use that method. I would like Push To Talk as well please. Thanks.

*Don't get me wrong. I like the quality/feel of the current comms system, but for a phone (push to mute)? No. It reminds me of using an analog mobile phone back in the previous century and that, to be clear, is not good thing. :)

Look a couple of posts above guys, this has already been confirmed by Michael Brookes to be a part of 1.3 update. Before ressucitating an old thread please just take a few seconds to read the previous posts.
