Concerning Crowd Sourced tools

I have seen quite a few people say they wouldn't use crowd sourced tools, like Slopeys, Thrudd's etc. And they seem to think that others are using an exploit if they use them.

Well, What about the people who got in on the rare's before they were nerfed? They earned hundreds of millions fairly quickly. But you can't do that now nearly as quickly as before. What about the ones who were doing the 'Seeking Luxuries' for months before they shut it down? I only did it for a week or so and that save has been wiped.

It sounds like some of the ones who've been around since beta think, I got mine even if it was using things that aren't available now, but if you use crowd sourced tools, you are a dirty exploiter.

Well, as far as I'm concerned, you can think that about me all you want, because I do use Thrudd's from time to time. Not all the time, but if I'm somewhere and have no idea what will make a profit, then yeah, I use it. And I'm not ashamed of it. You don't want me to use it, give back all the millions you got with Rares and 'Seeking Luxuries' during the pre-nerf days.

Methinks the lady doth protest too much!

Being around since beta means nothing - there was a wipe between beta and gamma, so whatever eploiting was done during beta didnt matter. The other exploits were open to all players as they happened during open release, so why pick on beta players?

I have been around since beta, have never exploited rares, didnt exploit the Seeking Rares issue, and think that using crowd sourced tools is a form of cheating. How much do I have to give back?

You want to tar beta players with one brush? Ill tar crowd sources with one brush.

Frankly my dear I dont give a damn. I dont really care what other people have or have not done, whether they were alphas or epsilons. Its your game....you play it how you want, and let other people play it the way they want.

I avoid crowd-sourced trade data as I'm not convinced that it's always accurate or up to date.
I prefer to either use Slopeys in offline mode or CMDRSLog. That way I generate my own data and any errors are my own damn fault.

Who are you, and why should anyone care what you do? I'm just a dot on the screen and have no illusions that anyone knows me or cares what I do, or that I'm the center of the game universe.

I have never even thought about whether or not Thrudds should be considered an exploit. I use it all the time because I don't want to have to play for extended periods of time but still would like to make 1kCR/T.

Until there is a better trade-data system built into the game, Thrudds is the only realistic option in a certain time frame.

Having said all that, Thrudds isn't even that effective. The data is all out of date, and I usually make around 10-20% less than listed on the site, and frequently have to wait to dock at outposts because other people have been using the same tools and are seeing the same (bad) data.

I understand why people would rather not use Thrudds, but they probably have more time on their hands. It shouldn't be considered an exploit though really?

I didn't mean to include the ones who were in beta before the last wipe. It that's how it sounded, I apologize for that. I meant the ones who were in after the last wipe. And there was no wipe on release. Those are the ones I'm talking about. And I don't see why crowd sourced tools are cheating. You're saying that you would never overhear things like, "Just ran a load of computer components to Beta Astoria. Man, they are paying sweet credits for them."? (Beta Astoria used for illustration purposes only)

So we're supposed to operate in a vacuum? Just because we can't get out of our ships and go to a bar now in-game doesn't mean that you wouldn't be able to if you really were a space jockey. And you hear all kinds of interesting things at bars. I consider the crowd sourced tools to be just that. Hearing gossip. A lot may be true, but not all. I took some tobacco from one station to another using Thrudd's. According to Thrudd's, it was supposed to sell for 4830/unit. But when I got it to destination it sold for 4690/unit. I still made a profit. And I'm not complaining. I know there's always a risk of the information being outdated.

Back in beta I started using Thrudd's and Slopey's. It gave me a good idea of what I should be looking for. Since release, I've stopped using them all together (I still use Slopey's for the travel history though).

I stopped for two reasons:

1. I figured out how to find routes
2. I found a handful of routes that always replenish and have no need to find more

Honestly, I don't think it is a bad thing to use the tools. In RP, I see them as tools that only members of the Pilot's Federation can use to share information. Plus, most routes you find on those tools will dry up quickly as the users of those tools congregate to the best trades in their areas.

It is funny really...I've noticed a few of my routes show up there. They flatten profits for bit, but as the tool users start looking for other routes, I just need to chill for an hour or two and my profits are back to normal.

I have used those tools many moons ago, but once I had more experience and a hell of a lot of data I don't use any off them now, even when I go out to a completely new system and have to start recording all the data again.

I use the most excellent tool "Trade Computer Extension"

It records loads of vital information, but all of that information is your own, not crowdsourced.

I would love to use the Trade Computer Extension, but I don't have Microsoft Word. I've got Open Office, but it doesn't work with OO.

Unfortunately it doesn't work with anything but MS Office as it's written in Visual Basic, which Open Orifice doesn't support.

You could get Office 365 on a monthly £5.99 fee, if you're able.

Trade Computer Extension has added to my gameplay immensely, keeps the immersion of the game with it being an overlay and helps with exploring, trading and many other useful things to boot.
