Piracy, the profession that's so safe...

...you can do it while drinking.

Seriously, the OH is out this evening and I've got steak, beer and clear evening of Elite ahead of me. I've got a choice:

Trading: Way too risky, one mistake and I could lose 4m Cr on the T7 re-buy and cargo, a couple of those and I'll be set back a week.
Exploring: No chance, all that valuable data is far too fragile, one vicious interdiction on the way back (or drunken crash into a star) and the whole night is wasted.
Bounty hunting: Really? Taking on well armed PvP pilots with my soon to be dulled responses. No.
Mining: No, neither with nor without beer.

So that just leaves;

Piracy: Cheap ship, no cargo or data to risk, weak/defenceless targets.

I predict most will simply run away, others drop cargo and run, chat and drop cargo (it'll be voluntary), chat and go free, or possibly get to blow up a drunken pirate that doesn't care. I'll be parking the expensive ships and going out singing sea shanties in some tooled-up disposable fighter. Doubt I'll fire a shot in anger. There might even be some reverse piracy on the cards.

If anyone wants to try to convince me there's a safer way to combine ED and beer I'll be happy to listen.

Many traders complain about possible pirate wings ruining their profession; If this is true, why don't you traders then get escort? You know, you too can form wings ;)

They can also keep shields and use those utility mount points with shield boosters. That would allow them to exit a fight...

Sure. But good luck making a decent profit though.

I never said it'd be profitable, just safe. As long as I've got enough groats fro some grog then I'll be a happy pirate. I'll lose more doubloons dropping cargo for those I interdict than I'll make from those that drop and run without listening. :)

True, though I doubt boosters and shield cells will help against 2-4 ships equipped with railguns/plasmas :p they're not that OP

So what, That sidewinder explorer is doing hard whisky on his journey and it's not a problem. Seriously, almost straight from the bottle.

but if pirates should be as broke as everybody says those should be rare weapons indeed.

Class 2 railguns are not expensive

How far can you jump?

How do you feel about doing A to B travel for 5 hours, with possibly NO interdiction (nothing to do for you)?

Will you pay me 15M rebuy cost + cargo if you fail to defend me on that one interdiction?

Sorry, this whole 5M vulture is just too much for me to handle atm, seemingly :/

Well, my picture about it is that typical pirate at the moment is not broke, because they have gathered quite assets through other professions. Talk you are referring to is not about who's broke(as far as I see it), It's about how fast you can make money by only pirating. For example, it would take crazy amount of time for you to buy and reasonably fit Anaconda just by pirating. In fact I don't believe that anybody has gathered funds for reasonably fitted Anaconda just by pirating. It might be possible with enough time, but I don't think this game has been out long enough for there to be that pirate. I'm surprised if there's someone who has gathered funds for well kitted Python already (again, just by piracy).

Besides, C1 railguns are only about 50k, less than gimballed mcannons, and if you fit your typical pirate cobra with 4 c1 railguns, you should be able to take shields off from type 6 with one hit from all four, at least two hits.

You know, this game doesn't even have functionality to give someone money :p

I do, as do a lot of traders, only the foolhardy travel without shields.

Dullest evening on ED since early beta. No decent combat. Well after failing to find anyone who didn't just try to simply run with no interaction I spent half an hour RES KWS NPC bounty hunting. Took twenty minutes to find a single one with a bounty (a novice) pew-pew boom 27k, ten minutes more searching with no more luck and I decided to suicide into an asteroid because it was quicker than flying back to where my trader was and the 27k bounty and 87k rebuy was less than my sanity was worth.

Did they take all the danger and fight out of the game with the 1.2 update. I haven't even been interdicted by an NPC all night.

I'm going back to flying with a trader with a full hold of precious metal. It least there's the thrill of boosting into the station and maybe getting destroyed to add an edge to this.

Where has the danger gone?
