Just to clarify...
Digital Download Pack: This includes a single digital download of the game, and any expansions, and all the other rewards above except those requiring physical delivery.

Does not come with the alpha/beta of any kind?
Private beta and alpha confuses me to some extent. Is there a separate alpha/beta? Or is the private alpha/beta the same as a closed alpha/beta?

But it does come with expansions... Will these justify the extra 45 pound? As far as I'm concerned the 30 pounds package comes with the same things as the 75 pound package except for the expansions and starting off elsewhere, which doesn't really sway me any.

The fact that you're paying almost 130 USD (2 AAA games) and you don't even get beta is swaying me to not back this game.

I have indeed participated in quite a few alphas/betas just to clarify. I just don't feel 200 pounds is worth just getting into alpha, that's an exorbitant amount of money. Of course I've backed north of that in Star Citizen, but I haven't seen anything to warrant that amount of money at this time.

In short...
I believe there should be a digital version of all packages.

You should put in 200 quid for the alpha. If you can afford it. Its worth it. Then you can help out with the game and find bugs and participate. And get to play E.D as early as possible. With X rebirth failing miserably we want E.D to be as good as we can get it, when it releases. I hope its not 7 years till :p If you can you shoud join the Alpha :) For all we know E.D might still be a couple of years in the making. If they want to polish it alot before release.
You can also slowly build on your pledge as you go. Which I did.

Digital Download Pack includes 2nd beta, which will start in February.

Expansions clearly justify that, because they will be fully priced, and they will include significant game play expansion like seamless landings on planets and walking on ships, stations, planets, etc. And those are only two we actually know about.

Alpha here is very modular, it is for those which clearly care about project. It will be annoyingly buggy and it probably won't as any alphas you have seen before (you can call 80% features also an alpha). So it is clearly a matter of taste. I am not in alpha, and don't worry about it, I will watch streams and videos to follow how it's going.

In short...

Well, alpha is clearly not for everybody, as you said it is quite costly, and you don't get lot from it if you aren't huge Elite or space sim fan. It's very proper alpha test, where testing goes trough scenarios (actually it is hard to test sandbox game any different way). So don't worry about it.

As for digital version - digital download pack practically is what you want. It has everything digital, including lifetime pass for expansions. With one already sorta confirmed, it is clearly worth it.

But for only £10 more, you also get not only the ability to start at the founders' World (+4000cr), but also more importantly the premium physical boxed edition of the game, a t-shirt, an A3 Star Map and a paperback copy of the official sequel to "The Dark Wheel".

Surely that's the sweet spot right there?

You know shadow if you do your research like watching the videos and read the laveradio and other info about Elite Dangerous. You get a lot of info on this game. Then decide to back it. If you read the archives of Design Discussion Archive you might find some info that might draw you into this game more.

It comes down not to the cost of the game. But what dose the game offer for that cost.

It seems most of the people on this game are more mature then other games.

There was a time I felt the same way about Alpha. Then the jonty-itis set in and now here I am, Founder and Alpha participant. :)

Yes - correct. Don't forget any expansions will be at least around £20 when sold, and we know of two expansions at least.

It does come with access to the 2nd round Beta test which we expect around February and you get all the other rewards above it on the kickstarted page except for the physical rewards.

Those that pledged to Alpha and above mainly did it to ensure that the game got made, if you don't feel that the Alpha is worth it then you don't need to bother with it.

Personally I think the Digital Download pack is good value, you get any future expansions free and several start options plus access to one of the betas.

I can't say for sure, but over the course of the year, I've come to understand that Frontier's public involvement strategy is deliberately low key. Its less about the money and more about the focus. This reflects in the Alpha where they set the barrier to entry very high in order to keep the numbers down. There are a lot of passionate Elite players on the forum who were unable to pay up to that level. Their (usually good natured) cries of anguish can be seen all across the forums over the past year. And I expect more tears to come over the next month as the year long (nay 15+ year long) wait for an Elite remake excrutiatingly comes to an end when the Alpha gets released. So you're not alone out there, and I think you will be in good company by joining all the non-Alphas in their excited analysis of all the footage which the Alpha testers have promised to share with everyone.

On a side note, I couldn't work out whether you've scoured the forums and blogs for additional information, but if you're only just joining us now then there is a ton of information that you can read up on in the mean time that may get you a bit more excited about the features of the game enough to inspire you to pledge.

Thanks everyone and I did start looking around for information. I stumbled upon a FAQ on the wiki, is the wiki in any way official or was it fan created? What I mean is, did the FAQ come from an official post and end up on the wiki?

It's not official, but we are trying to keep it as correct as possible. Every answer has multiple sources, lot of them are clarified. When something new comes up we try add it.

TLDR version - it's not official, but it is as accurate as we as the fans can get it :)
