Newcomer / Intro Trouble understanding 'Kill' and 'Retreive' Missions

So been playing off and on for a week or so now and got the flying down and such, but I am curious about the "Kill 2 Trader ships" and "Find us a Black box" missions. While in Supercruise targets flash by and I can barely have time to scan them and see what they are, and when I drop to normal space I am inan empty black void with no one around for LYs. So a mission says "kill 2 trader ships in [insert sector]... I go there aaannndddd? If I take the Blackbox missions, is there a waypoint of some kind where I should be heading for in the system it names? Should I have not sold my Basic Exploration Scanner for a Cargo Rack? Is that what I am missing?

The targets for these missions can be found is USS (actualy WSS), the things you have been wizzing past. To enter one, approach like you would a station, when you are close enough you get "Safe to disengage", exit to normal space and there will be something there. Very often just what you are looking for, sometimes not.
The best way to look for these WSS/USS is to go to 0% throttle. They will appear pretty much in front of you and will be immediately in range.
Do NOT go to any Strong Signal Source. Likely a huge fleet of Pirates who will waste you.

Fetch missions are for illegal goods, if you get scanned by the police, they will fine/attack you. If you take the mission from an outpost, you just have to dodge the police on your way back. If you take it from a station, then you need to know how to avoid their scan. Search for smuggling or somesuch.

If you are going for "Kill X", be aware that you have NO extra authority to kill anyone, the law still stands. Pirates are best, Smugglers are OK but its a pain to identify them. All the others (unless in an Anarchy system) will count as Murder, and you will have to deal with the consequences.

Thank you, I assume you mean Unidentified Signal Source and Weak Signal Source when you say USS/WSS?

One last question, I've been playing in Solo mode so far learning the ropes, when is a good time to jump to the online world? I kinda want to just to have the added perk of tons of players but at the same time it's still online which usually equates to 1000 ats waiting outside starting Ports to Rob/Kill me :(

lol. Which is exactly why I'm still playing Solo after about 2 weeks. :)

There are Elite Dangerous communities in Google+ and Facebook -- you might find some good CMDRs to wing with in one of them.

Don't worry too much, the galaxy is vast, and the instances are small.

Best solution if you don't want to risk encountering the less civilized players:

- Pick out a nice cluster of systems at least 100 LYs from the starting area. (Check online if it sells rare goods, if yes, pick another one)

- Go there in Solo and make yourself at home.

- Come out and play with us. :) Chances are good that you'll only encounter a handful of other players (if any at all), and most of them will be minding their own business.

All the others (unless in an Anarchy system) will count as Murder, and you will have to deal with the consequences.
with many of them you can avoid that problem by making them the first to open fire - after which point they become wanted, and you are only acting in self-defence

sit up in front of them with your weapons deployed, that often works. for the kill missions, ideally stick with the 'kill X pirates' missions - everyone hates pirates, even pirates.
