So .. after months of stalking you lot

The bottleneck is the card - I can lay down the cash for a very good replacement - but I've got other things I need to spend the money on as a priority (family etc). I can't justify spending a sum total of £500+ just to get VR working for ED *sad face*

....I have a pair of GTX 670s that I was going to use in an up and coming project after I upgraded and got 2 x 970s.

If your mobo (and PSU) can handle SLI, then drop me a PM.....

Such a shame to make it this far, why not offset the cost of a new card by selling you current ?

I hope you can find away to stay with VR for you and our community the more users we have the bigger our voice's will become
 
Parcelforce say that they'll be delivering me a 'package' tomorrow.

I'm not the kind of person to be fussed by resolution or having the most maxed out setting. All I'm looking for is to break through the scale immersion barrier. I don't want the game to be a window in a dark corner of the room any more and I don't want to imagine the things I'm looking at are supposed to be big. I actually want to look around and gawp at the stuff.

Hopefully the DK2 will go some way to heading in that direction. Fingers crossed (that Parcelforce deliver and that the experience is good).

Second the guarantee on immersion, Its likely I wouldn't have considered the game without Oculus - it is that good. I already have a race sim setup bought JUST because of how immersive the oculus is.

Get ready to have your mind blown :)

Seen your secondary post : your card should be enough, it would seem something is going wrong with your setup and you should consider making tweeks and changes, reading posts with people having similar experiences.

I was able to run these things smoothly with 4650 at low so there is no reason you cannot run it with a much more powerful card.

To run SLI, i'd need to upgrade the mobo and power supply. Thanks for the offer. :)

I've tried with all the settings dialled right back. It's fine looking in one direction but the issue is with head movement. I get double vision and it's kind of choppy.

It's odd because I can't quite pin down consistent conditions. For instance I was in training doing the Solar Fluke mission, asteroids everywhere and it was ok. But in the main game it seems choppy everywhere to one degree or another. Sometimes the same conditions produce different results. It is a real shame because the experience is stunning but the judder and double vision with head movement really throws me out.

It's the kind of thing I could get obsessed about trying to fix and there are no guarantees. I'm not bitter though.


EDIT: So I've spent part of the afternoon going through this and here's a thought. I get FPS drops before I get to 100% GPU utilisation (between 70 and 90%) but it never moves in to the final 10%. That may be the way that the card works - but what is the issue was power? I've popped in a card to an old box and not upgraded the PSU. Could the card not be able to draw enough power, hence FPS dropping through the floor? Or do cards just die if the power isn't enough?

EDIT 2: Hmmm 480 Watt PSU installed :S

Thats for a 970, cant find info on your R9 280 but i believe its power is similar - so I would upgrade your psu.

EDIT: Searching the net confirms - 500w is required - 600w+ would be better.

650W psu being delivered today as I'm under the 500W requirement for the card (checked the site). I'm not expecting that to change performance .... BUT ...

I had over clocked my GPU using Catalyst working on the basis that if it didn't crash, the OC was good. This morning I bench marked my system using Furmark. Standard settings I was getting about 47 FPS and a score of 2800. When I returned the card to the OC levels I had been using with ED, the FPS dropped to 30 and it scored 1900 ish. So the card was throttling back although I've not worked out why. The OC did include extra power.

I've yet to check ED again since but as soon as I get a chance I'll see how things work non OC.
 
Okay - here are my first impressions (as requested by Rennarda).

Set the thing up .. the only real issue I had was setting up the 2nd desktop in extended mode (horizontal flip rather than portrait). Fired up the Oculus utility and tested the desk demo. And there it was .. another world. I had to deal with my eyes seeing one thing yet my sense of touch feeding back something different. I must have said OMG at least a dozen times in a row.

Completely unphased by the resolution because the sum of the parts makes the whole and it's much much bigger than it was previously. Loved this demo.

My next step was to try the UE4 roller coaster demo. I gripped the desk ... the sense of scale and the feeling in my stomach as I dropped to the floor. I've never experienced anything like it. That was my best immersion experience for PC ever ... until ..

Fired up the Elite Dangerous training demo (downtime / patching etc). I changed absolutely nothing in the settings other than using 2nd display and selecting the rift at 75Hz. I'm not sure it's locked at that though and I may have to drop the res of my main monitor to allow that to happen and should also tweak the level of detail considering my specs. I didn't have long to play as my Dad was over and I had to go out to a parents evening - so a quick bash!

The menu screen was like sitting in an IMAX - I fired up the Solar Fluke mission. Boom - there it was. I was in that ship and I got what I always wanted - a sense of scale. Even the tiny Sidewinder feels absolutely huge compared to the monitor experience. Popping up the guns - these were not some plastic toys that you could buy from Toys R Us .. these were big, heavy military weapons. The cockpit was spacious - the radar was much much bigger than I expected. Small table as opposed to a sandwich plate. Head looking for menus JUST WORKED !!! And the size of the asteroids! Unbelievable.

Sense of scale > resolution in my book x 100.

It was without doubt, easily the best gaming experience I have ever had. I even beats the time when I was a kid and I first played the Atari Starwars game. I am so blown away.
Nausea may be a small problem for me - the rollercoaster demo flattened me. 2 minutes afterwards I was dizzy as anything. I got some 'nausea' in ED but it seemed to be minor and passed quite quickly when I started to use my cockpit as a frame of reference.

I can only thank the Frontier staff who decided to make this experience happen .. and also the folks in the forum who have supported this venture by sharing hints and tips.

Just for the sake of completeness. Having found that over-clocking my card was killing performance, I returned it to the standard config and, although there's some judder, it's playable and I've put a few hours in on VR. Can't bring myself to part with the experience now.

Nothing compares the that 'whoops' feeling as you move off the pad through the toaster slot and then see that massive planet looming outside.

Good to hear!! Overclocking can do that, I would also recommend checking parking on the CPU in power management options:

Go to here: Control Panel\Hardware and Sound\Power Options

Click 'Change plan settings' then 'Change advanced power settings' will open a new window, go down to 'Processor power management' and open the tree and then open 'Minimum Processor State' and set it to 90-100%.


This can have a big impact on 'judder' for some.
