I'm happy
I just downed my first Assassination target. I had tried one yesterday which ended in dismal failure. I didn't even find the target, an elite Cobra of the same faction found me first and busted my ship.
But today I steeled my nerves and accepted a second one for Patrons of Law ( Imperials ).
I went with my Cobra and a fairly standard load out - medium pulses, small multi's all gimballed and 2 x 4A shield cell banks.
After a few skirmishes I found my target, Fyodar Linge (or something ), Elite, in an Anaconda in the CD-54 9671 system. I targeted the anaconda's power plant and after kiting the ship until local security arrived I started making passes as the shields.
I found the small multi's woefully underpowered though and reluctant to hit, and often fire, at the subsystem I had targeted. After some time of twisting and turning and boosting and flicking flight assist on and off I was forced to leave with 4% hull, 7 minutes of oxygen remaining and a few shards of canopy ( on a side note I was disappointed to see no signs of damage on the external view ). Linge's ship having sustained no more than 50% hull and reactor damage
I docked up at the local station, repaired and had a cup of tea while I mulled over the fight. I noted that the pulses had been much more successful at hitting the ships power plant. So I tried an experiment - I sold my pulses and cannons and the 4A interdictor (so power hungry) and bought instead just 2 Medium Gimballed Beams. Those were hungry yes, but I didn't need to fire constantly. Just long enough.
I'm sure you're getting tired of reading by now so the long story short - only used half the shield cells, took no hull damage and demolished the anaconda in relatively short order.
Incidentally if you can get behind an anaconda it can't hit you, but it is quite maneuverable for such a large ship and it's forward weapons HURT. Use Class A shields.
Hope I've not bored you all too much
Happy Flying.
