Fuel

Haven't seen this one suggested out in the open yet...

Fuel, make it a commodity.
Player would be able to scoop Hydrogen Fuel out from the stars. Then sell it at a station. Simple, relatively fun way to earn them credits.

Players refueling at stations would pay according to the supply. Since it's a popular commodity, it would be always there, through the magic of NPCs keeping up a minimal supply. In more populous systems it would be way cheaper than in some backwater mining outposts.

Fun for fuel scoopers, traders, hardcore players that want to pay their asses off for fuel and newbies that stay in busy systems that want to fly for free, well, almost.

...does that make sense?

Thats a good thought, although it might be a very quick and easy way of earning money(just wait next to the sun till u finished scooping ,go to the sation , get paid , repeat ..) , so instead of trading or smuggling or doing missions, every newbie who hops in the game would just equip a fuel scoop and go hunting for fuel .I like your thought , although i think that it might render many ways of making money in the game useless . After all , in comparison with real-life , it is companies that extract , refine and supply fuel to the market and not ordinary people .

But mining is a player operation, what's the difference really?

I see where the OP is coming from but it should have a diminishing return. Maybe a special manually controlled scoop that comes with the Sidey as standard to enable you to scoop it to the cargo bay and not your fuel tank but in time, the scoop becomes too badly damaged and has to be replaced since it cannot be repaired. Cost of replacement is high and dips heavily into your profits from doing it, subsequent replacements cost more as mounts become damaged too intil the cost is more than the return. It would be good for a starting player to get going on the earning table instead of having to trade for the first couple of days. With a Sidey, there's little loss if you make a mistake and crash into the sun or burn up because you got too close.

Well, not like Hydrogen Fuel is hella expensive ;P

It would be enough for a beginner to earn up a little. But for some type 9 scooper, i'd love to see it more exciting. Forced to dip down with that heavy ship, into the hydrogen rich corona, dodging those outbursts of super heated plasma, flying through the loops of fire. Though i've no idea what would be the simplest way to make it happen...

not likely that every newbie would do it to get money instead of doing missions. supply and demand would maybe keep the prices down or up... so it could go either well or not, hehe
plus the fact that fuel don't pay very well. i have a python now and can squeeze in only 250 tons, how much in a sidewinder? hehe

I agree that the price of refueling should depend on the amount of fuel available at the station. Stations with a lot of traffic would have a very high demand of hydrogen fuel, making it worthwile for trading even over longer distances.

Although it would make sense, it should not be possible to strip a station of fuel completely, but once supplies reach a critical level, pilots would only be able to refuel enough for one jump. Or pay premium prices on the black market. This would prevent pilots getting stranded on stations with insufficient fuel supplies, while making the effects of shortage still noticeable.
