Newcomer / Intro To Fellow Noobs ! Exploration pays!!!

This might sound obvious to the more experienced players but...

I had a big long jaunt out to the edge of the Alrai sector hoping from light freight job to smuggling job as I went quite enjoying my journey. Being an amateur astronomer I kept scanning about with my bog standard Discovery scanner just to see what was floating about (Being a geek basically) and didn't think too much about it. I noticed at one space station that I had about 15 000cr worth of data - Wow that's as much as a risky black box smuggling run!

I have found myself back across the other side of Alrai now after a long hunt for an Adder salesman. I did a 3000cr freight run to Pometon and after dropping off my cargo for a a bit of spare change I sold my data for 75 000cr!!

Take time to scan about for a few mins in every system cuz you never know how much you could make for the data ;)

I noticed this feature, but you got to go like 10-20 systems away before you can sell the stuff.....i am still trying to figure out the whole intersystem travel, it can be quite tricky.

You only need to be 20ly away from the system you scanned in order to be able to sell it, not 20 systems.

Good luck and Happy Hunting!

20 ly is more like 2 jumps (systems)
with a fully kitted ASP it may be even one jump :)

when you open the galaxy map and hover your mouse over a system, it will show you how far away it is. just pick one that is further than 20ly away and go for it (using fastest route option, I would suggest).

Cool, thanks for the tip! Just purchased and downloaded after messing about a bit in the Combat Training demo thing, and really looking forward to getting into this game. I used to play a lot of old Wing Commander: Privateer and have played a bunch of Evochron, so I know Elite is right up my alley. ;) Really dig that you can be paid to explore, nice touch.

Welcome to Elite .. You are going to love it

oh, well, i saw the 20 in there, i assume it was 20 systems...but wouldn't 20ly be more then 20 systems?

Yeah but you travel about doing any job.... It's an added bonus!

My Cobra does over 25LY in one jump and thats still only B-rated (haven't found the A-rated one yet). However I have also rigged it for pure exploration now with no cargo, weapons and everything else D grade.

Exploration does pay. One week worth of doing a couple of hours per night, came home to 5M CR... it pays to go far out 2000LY+ and scan undiscovered systems. Just take a BIG fuel scoop with you...

You must already have a 4A FSD in your Cobra.. a completely stripped cobra will only do 21 ly on a 4B drive.

http://www.edshipyard.com/#/L=602,,2-6u6u6a5K5K5K6k,

Fit the 4A though with an advanced discovery and detailed surface scanner and you can get 26 LY

I'd still err on the side of shields though.

Oh note of caution ........ Be careful when sight seeing / passing through unknown systems as a noob in a basic Sidewinder!

Don't run out of FUEL like I did (twice):( Not my greatest hour - has to be said.

I was so busy having fun and exploring that I went a couple of jumps too far from the known (to me at least) and did not get lucky and end up in a populated system. Doh! - Lesson learned!!

The inter-system navigating is not as complex as it looks - you'll get the hang of it in no time. Have a good look through the tabs whilst sitting in dock and it'll come to you in no time :D

Nope practically all systems are more than 1 light year away from each other, most of the time 3-4 light years or more. you can see distances by looking at your left UI panel. the first tab shows the nearby systems and how far they are in light years.

You really don't even need to go that far out, there are plenty of undiscovered systems within 300 - 500 ly of inhabited space - the trick is to head in totally random directions - not towards any nebula or other landmark. Makes it easier and quicker to get home. I totally endorse the 5 million credits per week - that's exactly what I got from cashing in a week of data last weekend

I've set off on a long jaunt last night and have passed through lots of systems that are new to me. Ive not picked up a lot of freight lugging work as many of the systems were lifeless but it's been fun sight seeing

I'm off on my first longer extended exploration trip this weekend. I'm not sure which ship to take. I made some cash trading, I'm in a t6 which is my only ship. I might strip out some of the cargo and fit it for exploration.....or buy something else....hmmm

Do you get more money for your data the further away you sell it?, or is it the same amount as soon as you get to the 20ly mark?

Check Nutters exploration guide for information about ships. I think the Asp is widely recognised as the best for exploration as you can get a jump range of well over 30 ly if you have it well kitted out but that is going to cost at least double the base hull price (I used to have one but traded it in about a month or so back when repair costs were higher and exploration earnings were lower). Currently I run a Cobra with a few unnecessary upgrades (bulkheads) that mean I only get about a 20 ly jump range, but to be honest you really don't need much more than that if you're only going a couple of thousand light years out. I think Nutters thread has info about a Hauler build that is a low budget option.

Whichever ship you take it is well worth investing in an Advanced Discovery Scanner and a Detailed Surface Scanner so you can quickly discover all the objects in a system and get higher rewards for each one you scan. The two together are an initial outlay of about 1.8 million but they will very quickly pay for themselves

I'm well on my way towards Sagittarius A* (the supermassive black hole at the centre of the galaxy) in my Asp Explorer.

Found a few Earth-likes in my travels, found some black holes along the way. Carefully jumped into and out of neutron star systems, traversed through a nebula.

Exploration is fun!

No, Universal Cartographics pays the same amount regardless of where you sell it.

great thanks.

I started my 'head off in a random direction' expedition last night, I have scanned lots of systems and also managed to find two systems with pristine belts/clusters, so have bookmarked them to come back to and mine.

This is my first time exploring and Im liking it.

Its funny that you keep seeing the same discoverer names popping up on the bodies, I am determined to find one of my own.

Juat keep moving, and scanning. My latest jaunt I have just scanned 100 systems, 20 of which were discovered, but those 20 were in the first 30 systems, the last 60 I scanned only 1 was discovered. Dont go to the popular places, most big stars, nebulas have all been done.
