Newcomer / Intro Earning Credits Early Game

Hello

New player and first time poster here :)

Here I am in my beginner ship trading commodities around Eravate, where I started. With only a range of 7.56LY and a tiny cargo hold it's taking an age to earn credits and I can't seem to upgrade this ship. I've now got 65,000 of hard earned credits. Is there anything I can do with this to improve my trading?

My ultimate goal is to get a reasonable ship to start exploring, but for that I need the credits.

Any tips for a noob?

Thank you.

You sort of suggested it yourself. Improve your FSD to go further and increase your mission options, and/or increase your cargo to increase profits. Selling the basic scanner for cargo is a good start if you are going to stick around your known systems.
Dont worry about trying out differant modules, you get 100% back when you sell them, so have a play.

My personal experience in the beginning was as follows: I used my credits to upgrade to a better ship as soon as I got them. I mostly took out haulage missions from the Bulletin board to complement regular trading. My upgrade path was Sidewinder - Hauler - Cobra - Type 6 (there was no Adder back then). The Adder may end up being a pretty good exploration ship though.

A better way of making money in the beginning right now could be Rares trading. It involves going over large distances (~150ly) to sell rare goods. Here is a post explaining more about it:

With that amount of credit can you afford a hauler? It has a bigger jump range and can take bigger cargo racks. Or as Dommarraa says buy a better FSD and move away from the starter systems first. Keep the scanner and scan as you go. When you get to your new home sell the data to help with your credits.

Thank you Dommaraa, I'll look at local outfitters to see what I can afford to do. Last time I looked almost everything was red.

New ships are expensive, I only have 65,000 credits. Isn't the Sidewinder the current noob ship I have?

150LY is a fair distance considering I can only make 7.56LY at the moment. This is out of my reach for the time being.

And don't forget that you can increase your income by supplementing it with Galaxy Scan data - these scans can add up quickly in numbers that easily compare to what is possible with trading. After a certain wealth this part becomes more of a special interest thing, but for starters wholly recommended.

I'll check on the price of a Hauler, but with only 65,000 credits I don't feel that I can much at the moment. Even if I can afford the Hauler I then have to outfit it.

Doesn't scanning mean going to unexplored areas? Wouldn't that be dangerous for me in a little beginner ship?

My path was - do haulage etc. missions to earn a small amount of credits to upgrade your ship (I love the ones where stations ask you to find 'item X', and you can buy it in that station's Commodity market! Easy money). As you earn money, upgrade the Sidewinder's Power distribution, shields, maybe Powerplant and at least replace one of the fixed Pulse lasers with a gimballed mutlicannon, but try to replace the other fixed Pulse laser with a gimballed version.

Then go bounty hunting at a Resource Extraction Site. Avoid the bigger, tougher targets (Pythons, Dropships, Imperial Clippers and Anacondas), but even with them you could try getting a few shots in then running away really fast, you'll still get the bounty if the security ships take them down for you.

Exploration can make you a good deal of money too, but unless you have the Advanced discovery scanner (1.5 million I think?) it'll take ages flying around to earn it.

It's only unexplored for you.
It's like a GPS without map data.

It was the first thing I did when starting out, I picked a direction and just went there.
Stopped for fuel and selling data along the way, until I had 20.000.

Going to unexplored systems and scanning planets and stars for credits is the least dangerous job you can do in this game, apart from trading. The profits are good now that they have been doubled in the last update.

With your money, you can afford a 2B Frameshift Drive. They cost 53.408 cr a piece and up your jump range to 13-14 lightyears.

If you are afraid to spend so much money at once, you can take a 2C Frameshift Drive instead. Those up your range to 10-11 lightyears, which is actually enough to get anywhere in inhabited space, as long as you plan your route carefully.

You can also afford a 2C Fuel scoop that you can exchange for your cargo mount. Costs the same as a 2C Frameshift Drive.

With those 2 pieces of equipment and your basic discovery scanner, you can already go exploring. There are plenty of uncharted systems around your starter area... and even deep inside inhabited space around the core areas of the Empire, the Alliance and the Federation.

I did about the same thing, though got up to about 100k and bought a hauler which I used to trade more stuff to get me into a Cobra. It's a slow start but does speed up once you get that cargo capacity up with other ships. so my advise, carry on doing what you're doing to make a bit more money, (after all you need trading capital anyway) buy a hauler which has a larger range anyway and can hold more stuff, upgrade the cargo slowly. You don't want to put all your money into the cargo at once. I think the biggest thing I've learned so far is, not to rush.

Geez man, you can make a mint in a short time by just going to a Resource Extraction Site and bounty-hunting. You can just follow Wanted NPCs until they get jumped by all the other ships, and then snake the kill with your little pulse lasers. Beats trading or exploring by a country mile for a Sidewinder.

They come one after another. You'll make a ton with minimal risk and commitment.

Ah yes, there's many options. I'm terrible at shooting stuff though, so I went down trader/exploration route.

Just to add, make sure when you upgrade to a hauler that you still have enough cash to fill it with goods to trade!! I nearly fell into that issue!!
Also worth keeping the Sidewinder in case you fancy a change or see a mission that you fancy for which the hauler is not suitable!
Have fun :) Flash your lights if you see me around Eravate!

And also enough cash after you upgrade to a bigger cargo bay. Those bigger cargo bays are a bit pricey and it's not nice when you can't fill it up!

I did bulletin board missions until enough money for the adder, then trading 11 rare run until enough money for the asp. Once you get into the Asp you can pretty much do anything. Explore, trade, fight, its a great little ship!
