Keyboard Controls

I am wondering (I have looked about/searched the forums but can find no specific confirmation), will ED support the old keyboard play style of the first Elite?

I have never used joysticks (no intention of starting now) and 'flying' with a mouse as the controller sucks space dust IMO. Mouse is fine for the likes of Rift, WoW, Guildwars etc . . . I have also never used the likes of an x-box controller.

I hope I will be able play ED the old school way?! I still have an almost genetic memory using the keyboard controls.

Yes, absolutely! ED is primarily being developed for PC and MAC which have computer keyboards as their primary interface. Not having keyboard support would be a bit of an oversight don't you think?

woof woof! - That's my other dog impression.

Keyboard and mouse is supported, you could probably bind the controls to be keyboard only, but I really wouldn't advise it, you need some analogue input to get the most from the flight model.

Awww and here i was hoping to get away whit only standard mouse and keyboard setup.

Excellent, thank's for the response.

Yeah, I though it would be an oversight. But, these days with all the control options . . . don't know if you don't ask.

I have a logitech G600 mouse . . lots of buttons to bind to whatever. Don't mind using it - just not to do the actual flying / fighting.

Is there a controls list available?

Reading between the lines i would expect your ships facing to be controlled by the mouse/joystick/gamepad stick (this is where analogue comes into it i suspect). I suspect there will be lots of options for mapping all the other controls to the keyboard.

So expect more of a control system like in Frontier and FFE rather than the original Elite perhaps?

If it is not too late, I would like to be able to bind 2 or more keys to a single command. In many games I often assign strafing to both sides of my "move forward" and my "move backward" keys. Usually not with vehicle-type gaming, but most always with 3rd and 1st person games. No big deal if it can't be done though.

Same here. There is always some action for which I have more than one key or key combination, which I use both depending on the situation.

I will be building my own digital controller using a ps2 keyboard hack and was wondering if Michael (or anyone else at FD) could confirm whether I will be wasting my time on the following....

I will be using the cursor keys for PITCH and ROLL as well as two other keys for YAW. I will be using an n-key rollover keyboard encoder to ensure that there will be no key blocking/masking/ghosting.

So my question is.... Would the game be able to support my idea. I am sorry, but I don't like analogue controls at all. Analogue is evil!

You can bind whatever buttons you want for pitch, yaw and roll in both directions and there is a separate binding for analogue pitch, yaw and roll too (9 bindings in total).

All digital based inputs have a primary and secondary binding. Only axis assignments are singular.

I hope we can "Redefine Keys":

We've not released a controls list.

Michael

Since we can use smartphones to control PCs remotely (well I can with my windows phone, don't know about apple or android but I don't see why not), I wonder if you will be bringing out on app so that the accelerometer on the phone along with various on screen buttons can act as a control method. Sounds interesting as a gimmick :)
