Newcomer / Intro Buying trade/exploration information

Why is it that i can buy system exploration & trade info for some systems, and not for others? Does the station have a "stock" of this info? Someone need to sell the info of that system to the station i'm docked at? I know distance wasn't the problem, because i could get info on a system 20Lys away, but not on the one @ 8LY.

I'm sure someone will be along to correct me in a minute if I'm wrong, but the information on the galaxy map is not related to what Universal Cartographers have information on int he station that you are docked in. The Galaxy map appears to be pre-populated with information on a number of systems, I guess so that when you first start you're not presented with a blank galaxy map and no idea what's happening where.

I presume that this is a product of the "known" trade routes between systems, but as you say there are a number of known systems where you can buy systems and /or trade information from. Personally I use the availability of information for sale to see whether it's worthwhile going to that system to explore, So if for example the system map is unavailable but info can be purchased I know that there are things to be discovered there. Likewise if I can buy system info and trade info, but no system map. I can guarantee that there is a trade port there and it's more likely that there are more bodies to be found and hence more profit.

Whenever you buy map data, you're getting information that was collected by players manually and then sold to UC. If there is no data available then that's because no player has sold data on that system.

Given how few systems actually have data available for purchase, I'm guessing there is a certain threshold of players selling data the same object before UC will sell it. I haven't experimented with it though. It would make sense lore wise that UC would require more than one scan to ensure the data was accurate.

Be aware the purchasable exploration data is often.... well... incomplete at best.
Universal Cartographics is acting like they keep having bad server crashes. Often enough their data isn't worth buying even for 50Cr.
They're basically geared at allowing Traders to add the most rudimental Data they need to have these Systems show up in their Trading lists and permit the purchase of Trade data. Sometimes not even that works.

Quoted from another thread - I think the stuff that's available is there just to give you something to work with when you're new. But really they want you to go find stuff yourself. Which is ok because you can get paid for documenting a system that's already been discovered.

As for finding decent trades - Try Thrudd's Elite Trading Tool. Come and be an active member. Trade data only lasts 36 hours or so, so be sure to update stuff yourself once you're able. I update stuff and I've found it an invaluable resource.

Soooo....the bottom line is, we don't really know what's going on behind the . :)

Thx, but i promised myself that i will not use any 3rd party tool to find good routes. That's why i'm trying to clear up any confusion regarding the ingame tools.
