A few days ago i joined the Emire, too. The Clipper is just too nice to bother grinding more rep for the feds. After 2 days of bounty hunting i was friendly to the empire and two minor factions but still had no rank, but yesterday i got 4 naval ascencion missions in a row (actually 5, but one did not count).
Traitor!!! I will search for you amongst the burning ruins of your less master...

FAWAOL and AYMIFA are pretty decent hubs.. Aymifa also has the benefit of having an Independant Station, just in case.. and there are missions aplenty in the region.
BEAT-1 TUCANAE is also a good system, the Station is a little distant from the entrance point, but, there are 13 ships in the shipyard, and a great selection of modules in the outfitter. It also has some very productive RES within 2mins of the station, and so far appears to be pretty central for access to many of the Imperial Conflict Zones.

Lol....you have a choice, dropship or Clipper. Land in a drop ship with coke cans being kicked at you and children pointing and laughing. Or land in a Clipper, with a sidewinder escort, and imperial slaves throwing down rose petals before you land, with a brass band and bunting fluttering in the low gravity docking port.

I have to say, my final progression mission to Baron was a little anticlimactic. After running loads of weapons from far flung outposts, assassinating rogue Generals and cleaning up enclaves of pirates, my last mission was:

I too left my cosy job in the Federation and fled, far to the south, into the welcoming arms of the Empire.
I was driven from Ervate by a crime I didn't commit.* Falsely accused of dropping animals meats inside a station! The nerve of those less bureaucrats! I did not accidentally dump animal meat... I was helping some poor starving people by dropping 50kg chunks of freshly baked ham down on them. Instead of saddling me with a huge fine and threats of death, they should have congratulated me on my "it's raining meat" method of hunger prevention.
Okay, perhaps it was a 200cr fine. Now dormant. But its the principle of the thing!
