Defecting. I'm off to join the Empire!

While on a purely sentimental level I might support the Federation, the life of my Commander is starting to go the same way as that of his ancestor in the times of Frontier. The ships in the Empire are just better. Then it was the Imperial Courier and Imperial Trader, now it is the Imperial Clipper and upcoming Imperial Courier. Currently reached Squire in the Empire, long live the Emperor! :)

As I am currently assisting the CSG at Lugh, with the Emperor's blessing, my rank progression is stalled. But once this conflict is resolved I'll return to Imperial space to continue my service for the Emperor.

Welcome to the Empire, CMDR.

Good progress today. From zero to Squire within a day.

I've found that to achieve a fast rate of progress and to spawn the naval ascension missions the best strategy is to only do regular missions for the Empire. That's it. No bounty hunting, trading, just missions. Naval rank ascension is solely based on missions I feel.

Onwards...

That's it for today. I go to bed a Squire. Tomorrow I will do more missions for the Empire and see if the Emperor will grace me with the honour of a Knighthood, or further...

STATUS REPORT #10

After a good night's sleep I started to have second thoughts about progressing up through the Empire. However, after running some more missions for Imperial aligned factions a new naval ascension mission appeared in my inbox - kill 3 pirates. A quick sortie with my Vulture. Completed.

Rank: Knight

Continuing...

After not many missions at all Im already up to Master, I think its time I diversified and bought a Vulture too. Im making plenty of money bounty hunting and fancy something other than my trusty Cobra, while a fine ship I fancy the pure fighter capability that a Vulture will give me. Keep the Cobra for hauling stuff.

Made it as far as Ensign in the Federation. Took one look at the Federal Dropship. What a load of pants. So...time to aim for an Imperial Clipper. I'm off to Empire space!

Any suggestions for some nice Empire systems to work in when ranking up?

The Dropship isn't for everybody or every role. It's going to suffer in PVP when solo, especially if you try to fly it like a smaller ship using all hardpoints to alpha targets. It's just not nimble enough (although if you do fit 5 rail guns and score a strike, your target will leave a brown trail behind them in space).

In a wing or fighting against NPCs it can be a real force. Mounting a couple of beam turrets on the side hardpoints makes quick work of the smaller targets. The remaining two mediums and large hardpoint can be brought to bear on medium / large targets to pound home the pain. As was pointed out to me recently, the mass of this boat is enough to mean that it wont get mass locked by much so if things get hairy, you can hop out.

Plus it has as much cargo capacity as an Asp and can land on medium pads so can be used for multi role including trde.

I hated it until I flew one and now I love it.

Best of luck in Empire space with your Clipper. It's a good looking ship and much better for trade.

Welcome to the Glorious Empire, Bask in the Emperor's Glory... or just send him a get well card!:p
.
For Rank Progression just concentrate on the area around Achenar. Work hard for four or five EMPIRE factions, just do legal stuff. I went from Serf to Count in about a week of playing two or three hours each day. By concentrating on the central area you will also get all the Imperial System Permits on offer. No problems.:D

Another day and more missions for the Emplre. And another naval rank ascension mission came up. Go get 4 Combat Stabilisers. So off I went to fetch them and when I got to the store, up came exactly the same naval mission for 4 Combat Stabilisers. Handy. So I took it and immediately handed the CSs over. Very convenient. I abandoned the first naval ascension mission which I didn't need now. That was a mistake as my rep with the Empire went down.

Rank: Lord

Better get my rep back up again now...

ah.. thats an easy way to get caught out.. as the mission is offered by the Empire not the subfaction, it will apppear simultaneously in all Empire controlled starports and outposts, the refresh time on the board missions is rather annoying, i have made the same mistake myself as a result lol. While it is possible to get 2 proper progression missions in a row, id be very cautious if they are exact duplicates.

Bad news.

I lost rep with the Empire for carrying extra Combat Stabilisers in my cargo (illegal in some ports), taking missions from the wrong faction and abandoning them when I realised my mistake, and for abandoning that last duplicate naval mission.

I now have the dreaded down red arrow and my status with the Empire is "Friendly". Looks like I've got a lot of work to do to make amends.

Those bad decisions I mentioned in the last update have really cost me in rep with the Empire. Still at "friendly" after doing a dozen or so missions.

Tips:

  • Double-check which faction is providing the mission before taking it. Make sure the faction is allied to Empire
  • NEVER abandon a mission, even if you took it by mistake
  • Don't carry illegal cargo unless you're certain your destination is cool with it.
  • If a duplicate naval ascension mission appears, don't be greedy and take it. Do the original one.

I am now a Baron.

Mission accomplished. My target was to get to Baron ranking in order to be able to purchase the Imperial Clipper. I can now do that, or at least I have the option to do that. I'm not bothered about the next naval ranks.

This whole thing took me just over 3 days from zero to Baron. I could have done it in less time if I hadn't messed up by accepting missions for the wrong factions (and abandoning some of them). Last night I managed to get back to "Allied" status with the Empire by doing a spot of bounty hunting in an Empire system. Today I found I was "Allied" with every sub-faction I visited. A couple more missions and then the naval ascension mission came up - deliver 2 Algae. How humiliating. Nevertheless, I am now a Baron.

Now then, should I get an Imperial Clipper?

I bought an Imperial Clipper.

Oh. My. God.

What a ship! What a great engine sound. Good power management. Fantastic handling.

Using 2 large gimballed pulse lasers and two medium gimballed multi-cannons. Any better loadouts?

(I sold my Asp, not needed now)
