General / Off-Topic FD's Homage to Terry Pratchett - HIP 74290, Pratchett's Disc and Its factions!

Does this mean all comms go via 'The Clacks'
And, any chance of renaming security ships as 'The Watch'?

My favourite author has done a bunk....He is now a small god, if people keep reading his books he will live on

I've already spotted a few cheeky Iain M. Banks nods in game.
There are NPC ships called Grey Area and Zero Gravitas - I haven't spotted any others, but I keep my eyes open for them.

Funnily enough I came across a Bora Horza Gobuchul NPC in a Type 7 last night.

It's the mime artists I feel sorry for*

*not really. "Learn the Words"

If there was a Ian M Banks tribute station, I'd like it to be given a suitable name for a Banksian Ship. "Absent Minds", for example.

There are plenty of sci-fi references in the naming of astronomical objects already. These are all asteroids in the Sol system (though perhaps not represented in game...):

2309 Mr. Spock
4659 Roddenberry
7307 Takei
9777 Enterprise
26733 Nanavisitor
26734 Terryfarrell
68410 Nichols, and
155142 Tenagra

Actually, now I think about it. Back in the nineties, I payed good money to have a star officially named after a lady friend who I was trying to impress. Must get in touch with her and see if she still has the registration certificate. Then I can make sure that FD have got all of their facts right :D

*cough*scam*cough* Just like that guy (or anyone) selling plots of real estate on the Moon ... no-one, no company, country or individual can claim ownership of any part of the universe. If they could, then why hasn't someone claimed ownership of the entire Universe? (I did as joke on this forum a while back)

Sir Terry Pratchett loved these things:
-astronomy
-science fiction
-computer games

I'm pretty sure he played "Elite" sometime during his life.

No, it was a correctly allocated thing. All you had was the star named after whoever or whatever you nominated. No pretension to ownership or anything. Just the official body who deals with these matters finding a way to raise more cash I guess. But hey! I was young, well younger then I am now, and trying to impress a lady!

I think the test is if someone had never heard of Terry or the Discworld, and they arrived at the station would they think it was 'odd'. I'd suggest no, they'd accept what we know as references as just the norm within the ED universe.

Exactly. A couple of days ago I came through a system with a Werner von Siemens Station, a Felix Wankel Station and a Rudolf Diesel Station. So what? Some people will know who these are and some won't. Big deal.

My wife went to President Kennedy school (in the UK I may add).

How many schools, colleges, universities, public buildings, parks and so on, in the UK and the USA are named after people?
I bet other countries do the same.

So, why would it be different in ED? To me, it adds to the immersion. I mean, JFK died long before my wife and I were born, in another country not our own - yet a school here is named after him.

Individually and collectively, we are driven with a need to remember and imortalize those people that represent change in our lives, society or culture. with each adopting its own nomenclature, and rational for its implementation, naming is as much a record and roadmap of our history as is the etymology of our repsective languages. Rememberance applied through naming or renaming of property or location, especially as a way of honouring an individuals contribution, is by far the most meaningful reason for doing so. In a society, so heavily governed by self interest, self indulgance and instant gratification, disdain has replaced common courtesy, mockery has replaced acceptance and all because people can easily hide behind internet anonymity. So isnt it great, that there is a place such as this? a place where the developers, are more than happy to bring the community together, with nothing more that a desire to acknowledge an individual, show compassion and respect for a simple man, who liked to wear hats, and who created an entire fantastical universe in which so many of us have at some time escaped into.

And that's why you have to love Elite. :D
