Newcomer / Intro That's it, I'm ready to give up !

I've spent hours trying to get to grips with this game and although a lot of it has been painful with no clues what to do, I stuck at it, determined to buy a new ship and

start to get the real experience of ED.

So after about 20 hours I'm getting the hang of it and I've made 50K, great.
So I'm off to Eravate because I know there's a spaceport there that sells the Eagle. I have enough to buy the ship and pay my 9k fine as I foolishly attacked a Federation ship

and I'm now wanted.
Anyway, I buy a 4 gold to take with me as I know I will make about a 5k profit selling it there. Yeah more money!

So I plot my route, all is well, according to my galaxy map it's doable . So I'm heading from Zebrowski Prospect in Frendian with a full tank of fuel and a cargo of 4 gold and

it's time to engage the hyperdrive....5...4...3...2....1...... I enter the next sector and I dfind my next waypoint and I engage my hyperdrive and...NOPE! I get a message

saying it Exceeds 60 tonne fuel capacity or some other rubbish.
Now I can't plot the same route I did just minutes before, I can plot a route to about two other neighbouring systems that I've already been to and offer me nothing.

So now I've got a cargo full of gold that and I was planning on selling at Eravate and only 10k left, bang goes all my hard work.

I think that's it, I'm ready to give up.
TBH I almost smashed my joystick up on my desk I was so angry and for a 44yr old fella that ain't good, I've not felt like that in a game for donkeys years!

You may want to offload 1x Gold...& then check the route to Eravate...the lighter ship may now make the jump for you...& at least you make profit on 3xGold
Stay with it.

Over fifties fella here - yep I nearly threw my mouse across the room at one point trying to dock. I also got stuck like you have trying to move cargo. Unfortunately jump distances are limited and cargo reduces the jump distance of the ship. I actually spent several weeks stuck in one or two systems until I could get a powerful enough drive to get out and resorted to bounty hunting. Reasonable mechanics to be fair but very cruel in the early stages of the game.

It brings back memories of the original!

Hey hey , take a deep breath............

ED is a fairly unforgiving game and these things do happen from time to time. I accidentally got myself flat out of fuel and drifting in an uninhabited system. Had to self destruct and take the hit.
I'm now rather more conservative when planning my journeys. Oh and as I was advised by some very wise people on this forum, I got myself a fuel scoop. :D

You're still early in to the game and it sounds as though you have struggled a bit with the concept of a totally open game environment without any mission as such to start with. But the game has a lot to give and a lot to discover. Maybe take a break and have another go tonight with a beer in one hand.

I have had some really frustrating moments that have turned the air blue but the game just keeps getting better for me.

Well, you plotted the route before you bought the gold. Weight affects jump range. You might also have refuelled before jumping, which might account for the message too. If that's the case, jump back and forth between the systems you can reach, and retry the jump to Eravate until it works. If it doesn't, dump one ton of gold. Even if it's at a loss, it won't be a huge one - less than 500cr/t, probably closer to 200cr/t. Repeat until you are able to make the jump.

Look for an industrial system within your current jump range and sell the gold there. To increase your jump range, you could sell your lasers and do a Brave Sir Robin impression if you're interdicted, or you could sell any scanners attached to your ship on the utility mounts.

Finally, get the hell away from Eravate and its environs. It's a crappy place to make money by trading, as the number of players trading there smooths out price differences. Even 20LY away, you'll get a much better markup.

First to clarify:

With 4 tons on your cargo hold, can you plot any kind of route (eco or fast) to Eravate, or is there simply no way for you to reach it?

If so, head back to the nearest starport and outfit your Sidewinder with a Frameshift Drive Class 2, Grade D. It should give you a little more than 8ly jump range fully laden. The FSD 2D costs ~5000 credits, but you can sell it for the same price without any loss before you buy your Eagle at Eravate.

You can also up your jump range by selling your weapons, if you have not already done so. If they are still the loaned pulse lasers, you won't get any money for them but ditching them should give you an extra lightyear in jump range.

Hope that helps... the next best FSD would be the 2C model, which gives you 10 ly jump range, but costs 18000 credits.

You'll get to Eravate, no worries!

Well, I'm 60 this year and have had zero frustration with the game. I have played many, many space games in the last 30 years and I tend to double check before I do anything. Checking Jump range was the problem for you, maybe? In addition to the advice about a Fuel Scoop, in my opinion an FSD module that will let you jump at least 12 light years is the minimum to consider for trouble-free travelling. They're cheap enough for what they do.

Sucking sucks, don't it? It'd be easy if it was easy. Now, what do you want?

Think how good it'll feel when you realize you've gotten good at it.

Actually, a 2C Frameshift Drive with 10ly jump range on the Sidewinder gets you almost anywhere inside the bubble of populated space. I used one to get me to Sol after getting my permit, and from there to Lave to start rare trading after I read about it on the forums.

Was that really necessary?

Happens to us all..Well most. Take your time. When you get frustrated, play something else. Go smash some zombies in Dying Light.

Now remember this game is all about the flying. That is the end game.

It pains me to see someone disheartened with the game to the point their considering jacking it in, I'm sure you'll enjoy it once you get established, we all made these mistakes starting out. If you can wait till tomorrow morning I can meet you out in space and lighten your cargo load and give it back once you're back on your merry way. Choose to trust me or not but I have plenty of income so travelling lightyears with hopes to steal 4T of Gold really wouldn't be worth my time :).

PM Me your username if someone can't come to your aid sooner.

There is a slider in the universe map. If you plan to load up with cargo always set that slider before you plot, or... always plot after loading up.
One of the great mechanisms in this game is that mass influences jump range. I love it. But you need to be aware of it. It can be frustrating in the beginning.

Don't give up. Just learn from the experience. It is after all your own mistake.
You will laugh about this in a few days. I promise you.
I have made many mistakes, but they were all my own. One of them was having to self destruct in my Viper because I ran out of fuel in the middle of nowhere. I was so frustrated, but not with the game... with myself. Of course I had insurance money, so I could re-buy my Viper.

So, that's all it takes to get you to quit huh? Sorry to hear that.

I had my share of frustration in the beginning, but now I am getting the hang of it. I hope once you calm down you will reconsider. You just ran into a snag that you were unaware you needed to account for. That's all it is. You can't have everything super easy else you'd probably get bored really quickly. So the game threw a surprise at you, so what? Big deal! Improvise, adapt, overcome. Its part of the game. Figure it out, but don't let it beat ya.

You know you could have just upgraded your Frame Shift Module to a higher class for about 9k which made my standard sidewinder go from the usual 8-9LY jumps to 10.87LY and 10.2LY with full cargo. I also sold the stupid scanner for an additional +2 cargo space giving me a total of 6 cargo space in the sidewinder and the ability to jump as far as 10ly which pretty much mean't I could skip two whole systems and go right to where I wanted to in the first place.

Additionally you could also have upgraded your power distributor grade and the grade of some other bits which in some cases weigh less thus you can get away with more cargo and still jump. I could have splashed out one of the 28k frame shift drives which would have allowed me to jump something like 14ly though to be fair I learned my lesson about doing over 4 jumps with max cargo and standard modules during beta.

@Ledhead900
I didn't have the 9k! I also only play a few hours a week so my two weeks is probably 2 hours for most people.

Are you sure you are plotting the ECO route and not fastest? If you are struggling for range in a sidewinder then you really are going to struggle in an eagle. Also you will find Eagles in pretty much any system you don't need to go to Everate.
Once you get another ship remember losing it starts to cost money.
Loon.

Well, first up thanks to all you positively positive folks for your positive words of encouragement.

Secondly, I moved back to the last system I was in and sold all the gold back for a minimum loss after which I took the advice of buying a better FSD. Nice 1! Ta muchly.

Thirdly sorry for the appalling first post and it's broken sounding English, I had typed it in such a hasty anger led rant that I hit submit post before reading it!!!! LOLz0rz.

I'm again back playing and grinding away whilst drinking rather a large measure of my favourite Russian wheat grain spirit. ;)

Fourthly (and this probably deserves its' own thread or to be posted in an existing one) now begins the process of softening up my wife to be susceptible to my forth coming suggestions of taking money from the family budget and spending it on a new stick/hotas set up. Fingers crossed for a 3 way CH set up !!! (it will never happen.)

For 17.200 credits you can buy two gimballed burst lasers to replace your fixed loaned pulse lasers, if you have trouble hitting anything with them.

For 13.200 credits you can get two gimballed pulse lasers.

They will help you to hit targets.

If you head to Kremainn and enter the resource extraction sites in the planetary rings around Kremainn 2 or 4, you just need to search around for wanted criminals and after scanning them shoot them down for bounties. This is the fastest way of making money for a Sidewinder.

I also have talked my wife in to buyin me a HOTAS system for my B'day - not till June though..

I have also had the fist slam on desk experience - but....I came through it and so will you.
