What other Elite like games are there or are on the horizon?

Obviously we all know Star Citizen.

I know of No Man's Sky for the PS4... But what other games like these are coming out this year or have recently been released? I'm curious what the competition is up to.

Limit Theory is in the same vein.

Done by a ONE MAN programming team. He's amazing :) He has incredible dev-logs and videos. Check it here:

So glad I back the Kickstarter on it, just to be a part of the ride. Not sure when it will be out, or, quite frankly, if I will be able to stop playing E : D to try it out.. ;)

It is surprising really, how under developed the whole space sf game scene is. Especially when SF itself is so popular in other mediums. I guess that thanks to old JRR and giving some nasty fairies some good PR, elves have never been more popular and that is currently reflected in today's gaming fashions. I was gutted when Star Trek online went down the fantasy/theme park route (Just changing Orks for Kingons and the like) and had not gone for the "5 year mission" feel with a game that could have rivaled Eve and could have left Elite Dangerous having to play catch up with two established space opera type games.

I think it's underdeveloped because it's hard to make these kind of games, and if they fail they tend to fail spectacularly.

Balancing issues are just so difficult to resolve whilst retaining some modicum of variety between ships. Most sandbox/mmo/whatever type games focus mainly on gear selection for a character, and due to sandbox games avoiding character classes there are usually (somewhat) limited styles/approaches that you can take.

In a sandbox space sim you have multiple different ships, different fittings for those ships, escape/capture mechanics, PvE income/hour rates, money sinks...

The economies of these games alone are wildly difficult to control, Eve's is quite simply mind boggling! That said though, in the last few years it looks like some developers have finally realised there's an untapped market for this kind of game. Even if ED and SC don't pan out, I suspect some AAA developers will be working on something to mop up the shattered remnants of their fan bases.

I would love to see Frontier Cobra engine use to create the next Star Trek game. The way Cryptic and perfect world are going they won't be around for long.

Adrift (or Adr1ft). I'm thinking "The Vanishing of Ethan Carter and Dr Ryan Stone". ;)
Oh it's not an Elite type of game btw....

Infinity is still on the table, but chances that they're ever going to finish at least a shooter part (Battlescape) are pretty slim, let alone the full blown MMO (Quest for the Earth). If they finally get their **** together and launch KS campaign in 2015, I will support them anyway.

I-Novae are still threatening to put Infinity:Battlescape on Kickstarter.

There's no official info yet. Only what they've said in forums.

I believe the plan is a multiplayer combat arena, where an arena is a full sized system with atmospheric flight and landings. Aiming for a couple of hundred players per team (no instancing), so impressive battles should be possible.

I don't know about "On the Horizon" though. I check up every now and then, to see a few more screen shots or occasional video from the engine (which is fantastic, btw).

Beat me to it. They are actively working on it, but seem like a real bunch of perfectionists. I think they realise this though, so won't release Kickstarter until they are ready to concentrate on the game. Whenever that turns out to be.

The genre had it's time in the Wing Commander/X-Wing/Privateer/Freelancer/Starlancer era. None of them except Freelancer had any multiplayer. Notable is the X-series, as that's pretty much the only one that had regular sequels up to today. Elite Dangerous and Star Citizen now are the first of a new breed: The MMO space sim. Eh, I forgot Eve Online.

I've been following infinity since like 2007 or 2006. At this point i don't really believe it will ever happen. At the time it looked amazing. But too good to be true. Becuase it was.

this Limit Theory reminds me of Evochron Mercenary. One guy doing their own Elite. Evochron really doens't get enough love. Its not perfect but this guy has been doing space sims on his own since like 1990. That's all he's ever done video games wise. Major credit.
