Banged up by NPCs. Wow.

OK, so my Vulture is nigh-on indestructible. Or so I thought wading into a high conflict zone.

Everything was going swimmingly - 20 minutes in, I had about 300k in bonds after picking exclusively on the bigger ships (Clippers, Asps, Pythons and Anacondas). Spotted a solo Elite Anaconda, waded in...got him down to about 60% hull, and suddenly my ship lights up and all I can hear are constant hits from other ships. Look at the radar, and I've got 8 or 9 ships flashing red and white at me. What the...???

Two wings of NPCs, all Pythons and Vipers, laying into me (along with the original Anaconda, who suddenly woke up and started fighting back) with rails, plasma accelerators, missiles and not a small number of lasers. My poor little Vulture didn't stand much of a chance. Still, in the spirit of at least trying to avoid an insurance claim, I put 4 pips into what was left of my shields, two into the engines and boosted away while retracting the hardpoints and hammering the SCB button.

SHIELDS OFFLINE

Of course, the Vulture isn't fast enough to escape Vipers, so while I'd left the Pythons behind I still had them hammering on my backside but the hull's holding them off.

1 new contact

Yeah, I should've paid more attention to the alerts. An Anaconda apparently joined the fray, jumping in just off my path about 3km out. Didn't notice until the volley of lasers, cannons and plasma balls hit. FSD only 50% charged, hull down to 30%, canopy cracked...right, forget the shields, they'll never recharge in time to save me (this particular decision was probably a bit tardy). Full power to the engines, and start dodging around for all I'm worth.

25%, getting nervous.

20%, I'm thinking I'm basically toast.

18%...

THRUSTERS OFFLINE

...and the inevitable...

EJECT EJECT

Honestly, I've never seen NPCs that aggressive (or tenacious) before. Now that I know it can happen, I'm going to be on the lookout for it.

Anybody else been ganked like that by a whole squadron of NPCs?

Happened to me the other day - surrounded by green hunting the last reds down when suddenly all the greens have gone and the whole radar return looks like I've sneezed with a nose bleed - and no, I didn't hit a friendly.

Suspect it's the way that new vessels are generated by the game - it's why I stick to RES's

I get jumped all the time, the size of the wing vary.
Then again, one of the local factions in my RES REALLY hates me, so they send out death squads I believe.

I would imagine that Sarah-Jane may be quite pleased to hear of you unfortunate experience.... ;)

Aye - good job, if a little frustrating ;) It was the way it was a total surprise - I'd settled into a rhythm and I was pretty relaxed...then suddenly all hell breaks loose and my shields (with two boosters!!!) are almost stripped before I've even registered what's happening.

Still, as soon as I'd revived myself, I jumped over to the neighbouring low-intensity warzone and made back the insurance excess in about half an hour...all the while keeping an extra-beady eye on the radar. Every time I had more than two flashy red dots, you can be sure I legged it ;)

Thinking about it, I suppose this is one of the disadvantages of the Vulture - with a decent shield generator and a pair of boosters, you tend to get pretty complacent when it comes to enemy ships hitting you. I can usually spend an hour or so in a conflict zone with all sizes of ship bashing on me and never lose more than one shield ring.

I've been trying to catch a trend, or see a pattern, but I do think that after reaching a certain number of kills, the bad guys just get fed up, and single you out. I've been chased out of range and out to SC a number of times.

Glad you popped up.
.
Wanted to say thanks to you and your team for some outstanding work...........I had the most epic dogfights with some NPC Vipers over the weekend, it just felt "right"........cheers :)

Is getting targetted by many NPCs a random event, or is there some coordination behind the scenes to determine the greatest threat to them?

Happens when you keep visiting the same RES all the time. The local pirates hate me now, i am "kill on sight". Earlier i had to scan everybody and look out for the wanted ones. Now they are looking out for me.

Ayup.
Always keep an eye on them there sensors; I've lost count of the amount of times I've just bottled it and jumped out of a conflict after nearly getting swarmed.

I got banged up pretty badly last night in my FDL.
After half-an-hour of fairly low-value targets at a nav beacon I spotted a Deadly (not even Elite) Python.
"Tally-ho", thinks I, "at least a decent bounty" and piles straight in guns a-blazing.

Didn't spot the two Eagles he had flying escort - limped back to base with 30% hull, 300k in bounties and a great big grin :0)
I'm not sure I'd have been quite so philosophical if the battle hadn't gone my way though!

I wish this sort of thing happened to me. I mean, I decimate enemy ships in a high intensity warzone, but they never quite get it. Most I've been targeted by are 2-3 ships.

And a tactical advice for the OP:

Of course, the Vulture isn't fast enough to escape Vipers...

Player Vipers no, you have to try and trick those. Leading them on a chase so they string out behind you, FA off, turn to face them, FA on, activate FSD, boost, boost, boost - by the time they turn to follow you chances are very good you'll be out of masslock.

NPC Vipers - you can absolutely outrun them, or chase them down. Get a better power distributor and thrusters, and chain boost. NPCs have trouble keeping up. Works every time.

I've noticed that, quite often, when you pick on a bigger ship (not in a wing) in a warzone, you get a couple of smaller ships having a pop at you. It's usually when you see "Bandit on my six!" in the comms panel. It doesn't take a certain number of kills either - I've had it happen on the first or second ship I attack.

Always going (And should be) something bigger and badder than you out there. Normally this is another well armed player NOT NPC.

Yes I was also trying to find the limits of Vulture given I have 1.2x2 shield boosters fitted.
Found 3 master rated Anacondas enough to get me to leave without getting killed, only due to the fact they could not catch me :)

I've noticed the pirate faction in my home system, who are 'hostile' to me, regularly send hit squads into my RES and just try and kill me - no contact, no scans, just 'kill him lads'...

Mind you, they haven't succeeded yet, I love my Vulture :D

But is it only me that read the thread title, and had a completely different image in his head? :)
