Hesitating - three questions if I may

To be fair there were plenty of people here being sceptical over Rebirth on what was shown and not shown, the cockpit looked like a 2D rendition and that's pretty much how it acts.

As we can see from the the video, ED's cockpit is vastly different from Rebirth's and that's without mentioning the obvious, ED will launch with 25 ships, most of which we'll be able to fly and from the video it seems each will have a unique cockpit :). I don't think we've seen all the ships yet either.

Let me first say... WOW! I'm overwhelmed by the amount of people who already answeared in this thread in such a short time  Thank you all! It's one of those things which shows how much community is deeply engaged with the project (if I may use that word). I will make my decision after the weekend, but... well, I already think more positive about backing up, especially that £80 options looks nice indeed.

Thank you once again! Hopefully we will see on the PBF :)

PS.Fluffy dice from that last Devs diary really made my day :D Looking forward for that feature ;)

Welcome Hampius, the others have already answered you, the £80 free expansions forever is a great deal, and for a tenner more, you get the premium boxed game plus t-shirt. Hard to say no!

Have a look at the Damocles video, using pre-pre-alpha game engine, with just a little post production.

Still gives me goosebumps!

I reckon the PBF will be worth it in time, even though it's not so much at the moment. The forums will see a lot of new members in the future, and not just lovely people like yourself. The private forum will be a nice peaceful place for us all to chat in a way that doesn't involve being lost in the noise.

Yeah good shout... at the moment it is hard to identify what the pledge Tier really gives us, but I think you are on to something with that at least.

Would be nice if in time some other small perks materialised.

Welcome Hampius, as others have said, the £80 tier is really good value and worth going for. Welcome and enjoy the ride, we're a good bunch in here and a large number of us (more than I can count) played the original Elite (some of them even admitted to having a Spectrum) ;)

I had a whole post written out, but others have said it all while I was typing :)

Clearly you need to type faster or say less ;)

And it seems to me that a member of Frontier (Michael perhaps?) said there will be other benefits in the PBF, later

There are? There will be? How did I miss this????

Something I would like to add Hemp which I don't believe anybody else has mentioned yet is the ED community.

As we all well know a game is as good as its community. Many folks I'm sure have experienced good and bad. Anyhow the community here is very grown up, more so than the majority and one of the best around! This suggests our game experience should be pretty awesome.

To skip the who am I part I'd just like to tell that I'm one of those old boys who remember the original Elite back in the days of it's release :) And yeah, I liked that a lot :D

.. snip ..

And last but not least would you, 75+ GBP backers tell me if it's really worth to back up the project to that point to be able to read all those posts in private section of the forum? I mean, I'm not asking to reveal secrets lying there - just curious if there is much to be found there about the upcoming game? Please, be honest about that

Just thought I'd add my 2c on this - I'd say you're probably easily within the normal age demographic of just about 90% of the forum members. (Have you seen this? How old are us pledgers ) And strangely enough its what makes these forums so easy to be on. The probelm going forward is that the quality of the forums could well change as the game get released and a lot of entitled teenagers find the game and decide to try it out. This is seen as a good thing in general, but will also have the effect of pushing us calm and collected regulars off to one side a bit. This is where the Private Backers Forum will come into its own, a place where us older veterens can escape the riot outside, so to speak, and still have a place where we can find good conversation.

This thread does make a great example of a positive community working for the devs. Here we all are convincing a new punter to pony up even more cash for the game :D. "Crowd up-selling"....

Mr Braben doesnt even have to pay us commission.

Ok well I was hesitating but then I watched the videos and decided this game looks as good as or maybe even better then Star Citizen, so I decided to back this one too :D

I played the original Elite - I was in from the beginning at 90, lots of physical rewards plus life time updates for free. This for me was a bargain. I upped to a 100 six months ago on the basis that got me access to first beta and everything I had seen thus far made this a game I want to play. Six months on I was drooling over the recent progress diary and wishing I was in Alpha. I would say go for it.

Don't forget access to the private backers system in game, there's an area that may turn out to be interesting to visit. Who knows what information may be found there?

Jonty

Oh heck, look what you guys just did - now Jonty'd up to 'Kickstarter Special'.

… and I won't get to play the game until the summer.

However, after big disapointment caused by fail release of X Rebirth (which I had many hopes for), I'm trying to get back to the original state of mind and stay sceptical about new releases.

As we are so close to the alpha release (within 1-3 weeks), I would recommend you wait till you have seen some footage and comments from these testers. Some will be live streaming the alpha. This would be the first relatively independent review of at lease some aspects of the game.

I am saying this because you have been burnt by XR and if you were the one of many who pre-ordered that game, I'm sure you would have promised yourself never to blindly do that again. In XR there was no public testing phase, so no public scrutiny was available allowing Egosoft to basically sneak in the spanner.

If you read through these forums you will recognise the same anticipation that was also dripping in the egosoft forums before that disastrous release. I am not saying ED will be a disaster, I expect it to be a polished jewel, but coming from your XR background we both know that expectations can be deflated rather quickly.

I don't believe the private forums are worth anything significant. You can get all the info you need at this stage from non-member areas. If you asked the same question 6 months ago, I would have advised you to back the game, but in this 11th hour, a pinch of patience will do nicely.

If I were you, I would sit back, enjoy the alpha videos whilst drinking your Christmas spirits and make a decision at that point.

Thats fine if you just want the game, just remember that after Friday the 6th December, many of the tier perks available will be removed. So it really depends if you want any of those perks or not. If not, i agree, feel free to wait.

Though there is always the risk that the base price will increase. Just guessing though.

Yes, I find it .. inconvenient .. that the perks will be removed just before the alpha release.

If the alpha/beta gained positive feedback, I'm sure many would have upgraded to higher perks.

Maybe FD's wallets are full.

Yes, I don't think money is a major issue over at FD at the moment, but I also think FD is playing the "long game" here.

Anyone who understands the potential with this game when it comes to future expansion (seamless planetary landings and First Person mode with everything that comes with that) will find the £80 tier an absolute steal since it gives you all future expansions for free.

I am positive that the upcoming Alpha/Betas will bring in loads of new players into the fold when people starts to realize what this game can be. However since the plan is to fund the games ongoing development with the sales of future expansions it isn't very smart to basically give away these for "free" to a huge number of players. Much better to let them pay for these later, don't you think? :D

Also, some rewards like naming NPCs, stations and systems can't keep on being offered since they need to wrap those things up now.

Makes you wonder about the timeframes for these SPL/EVA expansions.

If things go well, at some point FD will want to release Elite 'Deadly?'. This will nullify all the current KS pledges. Guessing this will probably happen after 2017. In time, support for ED will be removed, and probably picked up by the multitude of fans. At least after the KS success, FD will have a bit more confidence in going with crowd funding should they need to for the next reincarnation.
