Elite / Frontier Encounter with the thargoids

Hi there,

I just started playing that game seriously and..... missed every hand-coded mission. :p

Is there any possibility to meet/encounter the thargoids without the hand-coded-thargoid-missions?

Are you referring to to Frontier : First Encounters?

If so, all you really need to do is reach the "trigger" systems properly in order to start the Thargoid missions - I've done it a few times even in the first year (admittedly, by using cheats)

Hey, thx for answering.

Yes, I`m talking about FFE.

I suspect, that with cheats you can get the Thargoid-missions back.

But APART from it:
Is it possible to meet the Thargoids in space APART from the missions. Can I travel to some systems with normal ships, just to encounter them?

I mean: I bought a game called "first encounters" (since Elite, it should call "Second Encounters" ;)) but have no encounters with the thargoids at all, just because I messed up the mission ;

If you can somehow get to Polaris (0,76) or Miackce (Sector 37,144) then it may be possible, but I think you'd need the inter-species translator. In Polaris, if memory serves me correctly, it's advised you have a transmission Jammer & Nuclear Missile from a military mission as well, to destroy a military sattelite at Polaris 3D.

If you do this, then you'll need to make sure you're comfortable with fuel-scooping, as the Thargoids will ask you to help them out, meaning a trip from Miackce to the core systems and back - most ships will be unable to do this without refuelling, and it may take quite some time...

Make sure you get serviced on the way out, and again when you return to the core systems when you're helping the Thargoids.

I don't believe the Thargoid missions are time-locked - I've reached them almost instantly by playing around with hacked save files before (well, the "shipyard mod" hacks you get in some places, that allow you all sorts of usually-inaccessable kit - A Viper Mk2 with a class 4 Military Drive can get access to Maickce almost instantly, and lets you do the Thargoid missions immediately)

The only option on the Thargoid station in Maickce (Yep, there is one, and it looks like a massive satellite, while the Polaris "base" is just a dockable ship that transports you to Miackce) is to relaunch, meaning you really need to be good at keeping your ship running, as well as the old fuel scooping techniques.

If you can't make it then I could always knock up a save file at the start of the game for you where the ship range will get you directly to Maickce. This at least would allow you to test out the Thargoid ship itself.

In fact, around the Polar-Base flying thargoid ships with marker "Unknown". In Original game.
6 ship types + base\transporter.

I now tryed traveling to Polaris by myself (almost a year game time!):
The moment, I enter Polaris, 10sec later my ship explodes. I seem not to be meant to be there without the mission....

Just had a thought - You may need a military Drive to survive in Polaris. IIRC, part of the defences is energy-bomb placed and normal hyperdrives can't survive those.

The problem will be managing to get that far out.

After having written my post, I went to sleep.

In the night I dreamed of visiting Polaris (I swear, I`m not kidding) and it came to me, that I had no military hyperdrive..... Exactly, what you said.

You get exactly the same "restricted area"-message like in the classified missions. So our suggestions might be right.

But then it comes to the conclusion:
Without the mission, you can`t visit Polaris, because you can`t refuel your ship in the atmosphere of the gas planets. You won`t get that far with a military class 3 drive.

Are there no thargoid areas nearby, where I could fight the thargoids?

If you like, I could send you a save file, with a ship hacked to have a class 4 Military Drive, which will allow you to see the Thargoids. An alternative is I can send you a file with the Thargoid ship itself, which can make the journey quite happily

I've since sent the thargoid save, and from the looks of it LouisedeFuines has enjoyed it.

There is a random bug with the Thargoid ship which often gives you a sort of "overflow" with Alien Artifacts (It gives you over 65 thousand of them, when your ship shouldn't be able to hold that much - if you sell them all, you can keep or use the extra cargo space). Sometimes it fixes itself, sometimes it doesn't.

With the save file I sent, I used the extra space to effectively turn the ship into something tough enough to wipe out entire fleets. I don't think it's tough enough to land on a star or Gas Giant, but feel free to try. It's just for fun, after all...
