Does the gameplay look somewhat disorienting?

I am a backer for Elite (eglible for 2nd beta round). I have been looking at some gameplay footage and noticed that I started to feel some nausea after looking at the footage. This is caused maybe because the pace is so fast and disorienting. Does anyone else feel the same? I really hope that once the cockpit is implemented, it won't be as bad.

P.S When is the 2nd round of Beta starting, on February?

Only game play footage was filming monitor. I really doubt you can jump to conclusions there.

There's no schedule yet, but we can hope so. At least at the end of February.

Hi devastat
Welcome to the forum and thank you for supporting the game.
Now to your question, I think that feeling may be a side effect of the filming process for the game. Once you are actually in game it should be ok. If not, the devs would have have options I think to turn off various effects in the game. I don't for example like blurring for instance in gaming in general and much prefer clean crisp images no matter what speed things are moving at.

It's also worth noting that the ship in the video is the Sidewinder, which is a smaller, 'nippier' ship. In relative terms I don't imagine piloting the larger ships will feel quite as frenetic.

Have a friend who cant play (or watch) any games like this because she gets sick. The more rapid the movements, the dizzier she gets. She does have poor eyesight though so, perhaps that's related.

If I were you, I would test out how you go in other games like this. Perhaps a fast paced flight sim or racing game where your viewpoint is moving around a lot.

If you do find you get sick, unfortunately theres no 3rd person view to help you out. You may be OK for the majority of the game, but as soon as combat calls, you probably need to fix your viewpoint to directly ahead and not look left/right/up/down. Think that will help with your motion sickness, but perhaps lower your chances in combat.

Thanks for the replies. Perhaps I should be piloting a large ship then, if I get some motion sickness in the game. I am slighly worried tho, and I would see this affecting other players too.. Maybe it won't be as bad after the cockpit is implemented, as you have something static to look at in the screen.

Can't wait to find out in February (which seem sooo far away..)

Might be something to do with the fact its a video, a player would anticipate the movement making it easier on the brain (just a guess)...

...although when I played Freelancer for periods of longer than around 6 hours solid, I did feel a little queasy lol

A valid point for anyone suffering like the OP. I'm fine with games, but get car sick like a drunken child if i'm not driving :p

Devastat, i'd take -o-'s advice and give yourself a trial run on a different kind of simulator to see how you react :)

As I understand it the OP is probably referring to the first couple of KS videos and in that case I do understand, but based on the latest footage from Dev Diary 8 the gameplay won't be quite as hectic as in those first videos.

I definitely feel a bit queasy when watching someone else playing an FPS, despite being fine when I'm at the controls myself.

I would quite to see the whole of the capital ship video but only from a single cockpit viewpoint (without all the cutscenes, I really hope they are not forced in the proper game) , that looks like it could be pretty hectic

I'm a bit concerned I'll be feeling queasy trying to play as well, I usually do suffer more when you have the cockpit-view rather than HUD-overlay style games and unfortunately (for me - I know others are all in favor of it) there's no option other than cockpit view. We'll see how it goes in Alpha, hopefully ED doesn't turn out as sick-making as other similar games I've played. Just from the videos I can't tell whether the added head movements (look ahead, bumps as you get knocked around etc) are going to make things better or worse.

I realise immersion (that worshipped holy grail) blah blah means cockpit is "better" but I'd rather have lower immersion and no sickness with a HUD overlay, thanks :)

I get sick as well some times but only if Blur is ON am sure the dev will add settings for that.

Yes its possible that once you helm the spaceship yourself it isnt as bad.

I would skip playing this game with oculus rift tho

Funnily enough I do not like cockpit view games (I always fare better with full screen/HUD type views) but cockpit games are much more bearable with the Rift.

Everyone is different but many games cause me motion sickness (anyone remember Descent?) - but I've had no troubles with Elite.

Not had too much of a problem with motion sickness while playing games,

Duke Nukem Forever made me sick to my stomach when I realised I'd wasted all that money though....

Descent caused me immense problems with navigation. I've got poor sense of direction at the best of times, and trying to find my way around a 3D maze was too much for my poor brain.

The only time I've felt nauseous from playing videogames is Tetris, but that was on car journeys.
