In Flight Refuelling?

If you had a large ship with an escort of smaller ships, wouldn't it be good if the small ships could refuel from the larger one like with planes here on Earth? Something like a fuel line that goes into the fuel scoop hatch and attaches there.

Also a beacon could be activated and a message sent out that a stranded pilot needs fuel and on arrival fuel can be given for Credits.

Anyone with me on this?

No. Take responsibility for your own actions. Don't expect a bailout for every eventual possibility.

If they implement that what if you can't afford the fuel?

If they implement that, why bother having fuel?

Why bother having a fuel scoop?

Yes..I suggested the very same idea weeks ago..It could be very interesting including complex maneuvres like in flight refuelling...we really need more of that...Maybe this could be a way to get out when you are lost in space without fuel...under payment (cost similar to rebuy cost but without losing cargo o exploration data..)

Responsibility? When flying in a wing this would be a logical choice.

Well same goes for when you do not have an fuel scoop and docking at a station and have no money to refuel. Not a valid point.

Because it would add gameplay mechanics, fuel is this there, but can be shared between two traveling players, say a Cobra and a Sidewinder. The Cobra could help the Sidewinder when fuel is low or you cant simply refuel from a red dwarf.

Because fuel scoop adds free fuel. The refueling probe could be included in the ship, adding no mass unlike the fuel scoop, letting a bigger ship act as a tanker, refueling at stars and having smaller ships jump with it using that little extra discount of mass to gain a little extra jump range. It would add a new type of support game play in fleets or wings.

Fuel scoops would be for those exploring out on the fringe with no local help available. If there are other ships around, it's logical that one would respond to a SOS signal. The pilot sending it just needs to hope it's a friendly ship that's going to turn up and refuel them, it could just as easily be a pirate looking for easy pickings.

A friendly ship with specific equipment to transfer fuel. Not a profitable career.

Also a fuel scoop is very much worth it even in the inhabited systems.

Fuel transfer should be a feature of the game.

Additionally, a distress beacon should be a feature of the game. (Essentially a wing beacon that could be visible for a certain distance, 100ly, etc.) and also always visible to friends/wingmembers, who get an alert on the info panel too.

bumptastic I have been thinking this for a long time... there could be ships large enough for you to dock in .. and there should be modules that have extra fuel that can be transferred from one ship to another ... by simply lining up and docking on top of a shop or beside a ship (wherever the fuel transfering would take place) activate fuel module .. bingo refueling ok.. YEE

edit: there should be NO reason why you can't have a friend come bring you fuel when you run out of fuel in space.... transmit your signal or w/e and have a friend come help you... it makes no sense as it is to fckng self-destruct when you run out of fuel .. I mean COME ON what YEAR IS THIS??!?

Yes, and we have planes that can fly themselves, cars that can drive themselves but in 1300 years time we have conquered the stars but forgotten all that. No. It's called a game mechanic and punishes you for being dumb and makes reward of success more enjoyable, because how would it feel if there was zero risk?

why are people fighting this...

running out of fuel and laying around in space dormant is not zero risk or zero punishment but telling you to kill yourself for running out of fuel is ridiculous... BESIDES if you are transmitting a signal so your friend can find you THEN so CAN PIRATES.. not zero risk not zero punishment. .. and still "WHOOPS ran out of fuel better fcking kill myself". is not exactly a game mechanic I'd be interested in.. it's ludicrous to assume that you'd feel more rewarded for not running out of fuel by not having to kill yourself when you do run out of fuel.. this is absurd.. your argument is absurd.

Its ludicrous that you didn't plan ahead and ran out of fuel. No one responds to your hails. You wait. You can last a while without moving. You log off. You come back. You run out of fuel and suffocate as your life support runs out. Should that be nerfed too?

You run out of fuel near Sag A. You expect an NPC to appear? How about 10000 ly from inhabited space or 1000ly? How about an uninhabited system within the inhabited zone?

Here is a simple way of not running out of fuel: don't use fastest route in the map. If you do use a fuel scoop.

I've never run out of fuel, BTW.

I don't understand the posts about not planning ahead.

Planning ahead:

A transporter wants an armed escort but is going further than the fighters drives will take it. There are none/not enough stars that can be skimmed en route. The transporter gets a fuel line fitted.

Running out of fuel, should have planned ahead/fitted a fuel scoop:

What if your fuel scoop gets blasted?

It could be fun travelling to someone's rescue.

There are more stars you can scoop from than not.

In economy mode an Asp can travel from one end of inhabited space to the other with fuel left over.

If you don't look at the dwindling fuel gauge and think I had better find a station to refuel at then you only have yourself to blame.

If your fuel transfer device gets blasted? Tough luck. You probably should stay away from rough areas until you have improved your ship/flight skills.

Talking about the escorts not the transporter. Nothing to do with flight skills. Or do you bog down the esort ships with modules and slow them down?

F-16 Pilot: "Request Refuelling"

Radio Reply "You should have thought about that before you left or flown a boeing 747 into the combat zone. You'll have to ditch her. Next time learn to fly!"

Not all planes can refuel others and planes that can refuel others have to be booked well in advance. Air tankers, due their vulnerability, are no where near the theatre of combat.

So you want the game to become: Jump, jump, jump, call in refueller, jump, jump, jump, call in refueller, ad infinitum?

You say it might attract pirates. What if the pirate kills you? Should that be prevented too just because you were out of fuel? So if it attracts pirates more times than a refueller aren't you better of just learning to refuel more often and not use fastest route all the time?

No. The idea isn't to make it so convenient that it becomes the default behavior, the idea is that it adds an extra option, another layer of gameplay. As well as extra immersion, since the idea of SOS calls not existing, and self-destruction being the default response to running out of gas is unfathomably stupid.

The risks involved would include nobody responding, someone passing by and being unwilling to help, much more expensive fuel than if purchased at a station, and possibly a pirate responding to a sitting duck. Hardly a risk-free endeavor. Besides, right now the default for anyone with a scoop is "Jump, sit for 30 seconds. Jump, sit for 30 seconds. Jump, sit for 30 seconds". How is that inherently different than "Jump, jump, jump, SOS"?

To me, being able to send and respond to distress calls would be far more compelling gameplay than everyone who runs out of fuel just self-destructing.

Plus the fact that the larger ship could possibly last longer than smaller ships, therefore the smaller ships could run dry during the trip, but if the larger ship could act as a tanker they could refuel and jump.
And seriously, take 3 sidewinders and a T9. Would the T9 really notice any difference in fuel loss given to the sidewinders? I got from sidewinder to cobra and holy the cobra's fuel tank is huge compared....
