Will ED be PC only?

I was just wondering if Elite dangerous sports the same benefit as Star citizen as being PC only, or will it be a console port?

Sorry, but I just have to know before I back.

Pc then Mac then....who knows???

Welcome to the forum. :D

Welcome to you Dajunka from another SC backer and like TJ just said, the first version of Elite Dangerous will be for the PC then the Mac. After those two there has been no official announcements as yet for other ports.

Thank you.
I am happy to know it will be made primary for the PC, it sort of guarantees maximum quality, if you know what I mean, not a xbox controller to be found anywhere. :)

I have been a Elite fan since the BBC micro, so you can imagine how much I am looking forward to the new and very dangerous Elite.

This much <----------------------------------------------------------->

Thank you.

Actually, one of the control systems that will very much be supported is the Xbox 360 controller! ;) They've been using that quite a bit in development it seems.

No matter, i could never use one of the darn things myself, much prefer a good joystick with all of the do-dars attached. :)

I did see a xbox controller also being used by the developers of Star citizen. Let's hope it's not the primary form of control for Elite D. I very much doubt it.

Star citizen looks very nice and all, but I am more of a Elite person, so I guess this is where I will be parking my money.

I think it will be the most commonly used one, because it's like twin mini joysticks. But nothing will beat a decent HOTAS setup...

Being on consoles allows for Elite to have a potential budget 4 or 5 times bigger than Star Citizen. The flow of cash would allow for further investment into making Elite expanded in many areas.

Check this recent forum post by Chris Roberts:

https://forums.robertsspaceindustries.com/discussion/76653/

Chris basically said that the reference platform is going to be the PC and PC-style controllers, and that Star Citizen won't be dumbed down from that, but he didn't rule out a next-gen console port. I'm confident that David Braben/Frontier won't be dumbing their game down either.

But either of these games could be ported to consoles that can handle them without requiring dumbing down of the PC experience. Keeping that option open is just sound business sense.

There hasn't been a mention of a console port. The game currently requires a quad core CPU at 2ghz, and no current gen console has that. Sony console is at 1.6ghz. So already it is at a disadvantage. True the game is not optimized yet so it could possibly play it, but currently their cpu is lacking the power to play it at minimum specs. Also as the funding goal was reached a Mac version should be the next system for the game to be ported to.

So I don't see a console version in the near future, could it? Probably but it would be at a disadvantage. I can't see with the expansion plans a slower cpu is going to help a console when planetary landings begin. Maybe as a standalone game port to a console? Who knows, but for now, nothing but a PC version and then a Mac. Also it was said if you have more then the minimum specs will the game look and play better and the answer was a resounding yes. So a console will never look as good, and they certainly didn't aim for it.

I don't really want to see Elite Dangerous on consoles - but I can see it being on consoles, if you see what I mean.

The problem is, with any complicated game, the intricate controls you can achieve with a keyboard and mouse, simply cannot be replicated with something like a console controller.

There are those peeps who will swear that their HOTAS controllers can do more than a keyboard, or that a controller is far more comfortable, available in basically every living room in the country, and so will bring in so many new players to the game.

Maybe they are right.

However, and yes I am banging my head on the wall here too - but playing the Carrier Command remake on an Xbox controller was simply awful. Didn't matter if it was on a PC or on an actual Xbox - it was awful beyond belief.

Please, don't let Elite get into such a mess!

The new generation of consoles have taken a step backwards in my opinion. The hardware may have improved, but it's not tangible. I spent hours, literally hours, looking for the setting to get Forza and Dead Rising to work at my native TV resolution. I couldn't try with Ryse (my only disc-based purchase) as my bluray drive is still dead.

No such thing exists. It's 30Hz 720p all the way baby! Yay for progress!

First Windows, then Mac... Then hopefully Linux so all most important PC operating systems are covered.

Consoles? Who knows. Doesn't really matter to me as long as it is PC first.

Yes, as long as PC first, what could go wrong? :)

I'm not all that techie minded, but I do know that when a console game is ported over to PC, or a game is developed with both in mind, that the game never will reach it's full potential, it will be half the game it could have been.

But I think we are safe here in the knowledge that it's PC, Mac then maybe Linux, before consoles will receive any sort of attention.

I am concerned because with a game such as Elite. I'm sure you would all agree with me when I say that I want Elite to be the best game it could possibly be....for the PC.

I can tell you one thing. If the game turns out to be anything like the trailers I have watched so far, then it's going to give me a heart attack. ;)

At present it takes a high end PC with Titan card to just about do more than what a PS4 does with the latest games. Comparing BF4 performance certainly.

A quad core at 2ghz you compare to 1.6ghz but it has 8 cores. Also the 1.6ghz is guess/rumour, it could be still be 1.8 as chip goes upto 2.0ghz.
Console software is targeted to use all the hardware at it's best, including the 8GB GDDR5 ram. And the the API tools and access much better than PC.

Additionally Sony have said they expect shorter life cycle for PS4, in 5 years time there could be the PS5 with even better hardware, and they should have backward compatibility due to x86 platform now used.
