Banged up by NPCs. Wow.

While talking about NPC I'd like to mention that the NPC Asp pilots need some improvements.

I am speaking out of the perspective as a Python pilot vs NPC Asp, so I have no idea how the Asp NPCs fly against other ships.

During a fight, when we attack each other head on the Asp usually slows down and tries to turn away from me which

a) often results in the Asp turning directly in front of me, granting me a clear line of fire on a very slow moving target (yay!), or
b) the Asp partially gets outside my FOV only to give me a hull to hull massage and cuddle me to death (while trying to turn to get distance).

Both behaviors are really annoying and probably the worst combat action the Asp NPC pilot could make.

The Asp should not even try and turn in front of or next to a Python but either break away much earlier or completely pass by me and then turn to get a shot at me.

The above behavior, combined with the extremely vulnerable power plant, makes the Asp one of the easiest targets so they die like flies.

The issues with the Asp you highlight are the same fighting them in any ship. The problem is that they turn so slowly, and have such a huge area. Not really a problem if you want to blow them out the sky of course! Asps are the one "big" ship that never, ever lay a shot on me. I've taken them out with a basic Adder, and in the Vulture they're just a few seconds of Burst LASER away from Bounty Bounty.

Dunno how to improve their AI though? Maybe they need to use roll more, to minimise target size and to get more side turrets effective? I don't know how I would fight in an Asp myself.

For the example above they should either break away much earlier or much later, probably the latter, just like two knights jousting. Passing by its target and only then turning to get back the line of fire is the only chance the Asp has, maybe even FA off boost 180° turning if they are Elite.

You write about turrets, but they are kind of useless in the Asp since all hardpoints are pointing to the front with not much space around them to fire anywhere else.

An Asp would only ever have two turrets available at a time from above and four below, as the ship would need to pitch up (or down by about 30 degrees ) to get a clear shot behind. Dead astern is a blind spot, and above and behind is the most damaging attack vector for the power plant.

Don't I know it. An Asp has two modes: head on, or run away. Power plants are the best systems to target, as well.

Asp vs Eagle is almost "no fair", as the birdie can run rings around the Lakon. Flights of 3+ Eagles are just plain terror.

I'm gonna enjoy it. ;) Hoping to surprise a few people with all the enhancements. Can't say what... but I'm feeling pretty evil these days... ;)

I'm really looking forward to see what you've been fiendishly slaving away at, although I have a feeling it's going to cost me some credits :D

I've been trying to catch a trend, or see a pattern, but I do think that after reaching a certain number of kills, the bad guys just get fed up, and single you out. I've been chased out of range and out to SC a number of times.

I've been doing the same last few weeks.

I think your right.

Also the npc's in conflict zones have a long leash sometimes. They can chase me for 40km+ into empty space. Sometimes they get mad.

I think high CZ are really for wings tbh.

Dear Sarah... I don't know whether you are also responsible for the spawn rate of security ships in Resource Extraction Sites, but I have noticed that the longer I stay in one, the more those security ships seem to multiply... to the point that there is literally a sizeable fighter fleet swarming the asteroid belt, outnumbering miners and pirates alike 10 to 1 at least.

I wouldn't mind two to four wings of authority vessels patrolling an RES, but currently the numbers are ridiculous. The scanner is full of green contacts and you have to switch through dozens of targets until you even find a vessel that's not part of the police force, let alone wanted.

Isn't that because 'report crimes against me' is on?

That's why all the security turns up. If you turn it off then security won't show up to help you. Even so, it's ridiculas the amount that show up. It should be capped to a sensible level otherwise security just takes over the res.

OK, so my Vulture is nigh-on indestructible. Or so I thought wading into a high conflict zone.

Everything was going swimmingly - 20 minutes in, I had about 300k in bonds after picking exclusively on the bigger ships (Clippers, Asps, Pythons and Anacondas). Spotted a solo Elite Anaconda, waded in...got him down to about 60% hull, and suddenly my ship lights up and all I can hear are constant hits from other ships. Look at the radar, and I've got 8 or 9 ships flashing red and white at me. What the...???

Two wings of NPCs, all Pythons and Vipers, laying into me (along with the original Anaconda, who suddenly woke up and started fighting back) with rails, plasma accelerators, missiles and not a small number of lasers. My poor little Vulture didn't stand much of a chance. Still, in the spirit of at least trying to avoid an insurance claim, I put 4 pips into what was left of my shields, two into the engines and boosted away while retracting the hardpoints and hammering the SCB button.

SHIELDS OFFLINE

Of course, the Vulture isn't fast enough to escape Vipers, so while I'd left the Pythons behind I still had them hammering on my backside but the hull's holding them off.

1 new contact

Yeah, I should've paid more attention to the alerts. An Anaconda apparently joined the fray, jumping in just off my path about 3km out. Didn't notice until the volley of lasers, cannons and plasma balls hit. FSD only 50% charged, hull down to 30%, canopy cracked...right, forget the shields, they'll never recharge in time to save me (this particular decision was probably a bit tardy). Full power to the engines, and start dodging around for all I'm worth.

25%, getting nervous.

20%, I'm thinking I'm basically toast.

18%...

THRUSTERS OFFLINE

...and the inevitable...

Honestly, I've never seen NPCs that aggressive (or tenacious) before. Now that I know it can happen, I'm going to be on the lookout for it.

Anybody else been ganked like that by a whole squadron of NPCs?

Yep happened to me last night in my Cobra. Had about 250,000 in combat bonds. I was chasing down a dying viper when i started taking multiple hits. I should have got out of town but i wanted my kill. Which i got but ended up being smashed to pieces moments later.

Loved it though. Most edge of your seat fun I've had in Elite yet!

Happened to me a few times lately, I'd rather fight anacondas than a 8 or 9 little ships, the mob of ships can really hurt. Fun though.

Yep. +1 for this type of encounter. Took on a Dropship in my "nothing scares me" Cobra last night. Slunk quietly back to dock nursing a very, very poorly Cobra. Lots of wounded pride, too. It was a bit of a shock.

I have written out 100 times, "NPCs will now kill you. They have no feelings and show no mercy. Be careful".

Flying happy (but afraid)

Jon

Its down to player skill, power management, FA on/off, boosting away and re-engaging. I deal with dropships all the time in my Cobra. In fact the only ship I don't attack alone is an Anaconda anything else is fair game.

I have been wanting the NPCs to recognise a high lvl threat, and to react appropriately. It's great that this is now happening.

It could be more gradual of course :D
