Newcomer / Intro Well I am about to uninstall the game - somebody stop me

Ok I calmed down a bit and went back. I didn't know that there were democracy/high pop locations with low sec. I never saw it on the system map at all. Might be an idea to highlight it in a different colour - green for high, red for low etc. I'm afraid I thought it was like the original Elite. I found a High security system with one industrial and one agricultural port and I'm now trading between them. Got myself back up to 70K and haven't been interdicted (yet).

I'm staying away from all non high sec in this crate that's for sure. Is good for a doorstop I guess.

A lot of folks don't like the hauler, but it was an affordable step for me from the sidewinder and it bought me a cobra so it's not all bad.

I still remember my first launch with the thing fondly. It was certainly clear to me that this was a trader not a fighter.
On another point, if there are other ships around me I don't scoop. The scoop trap has been around since early beta and is very effective.

Fly safe, enjoy your hauler...

Haha....you a salesman?

Ok point taken! Its just hard to figure out exactly whats possible with a ship going on the info given considering I have no manual (digital download).

I'm also squarely in the Adder camp. Hauler is PURE trader like T6, T7 and T9. They are just not made for any fighting. Hauler has less armament than a Sidey. With it there is only one tactic - run! Right now the best mechanics to escape the interdiction is to submit, put four pips in engine and two in shields, max thrust and boost until you get out.

I would buy a Hauler only if you are really desperate to get out of the free Sidey, otherwise wait a bit and get an Adder. Note, that even though the base price difference is small, it is decidedly more expensive to outfit an Adder. You will be buying class 3 vs class 2 upgrades. In the beginning of the game that difference matters. Nicely outfitted Adder tops a million cr in cost, comparably equipped Hauler, half of that.

Not another one :( I love my hauler for exploration. I'm over 1000 LY away from SOL and having fun in my little space truck :p

I'm glad you like it but in PvP it's a duck target. Especially to trolls and griefers. I hope you haven't and don't come across these types but I have and given that, there's no way I would bother with the Hauler. If you have a Hauler, or any pure freighter, I think it best to get escorts unless you strictly play solo.

I 've still managed to defend myself quite well in the Adder. Even after buying it with all the E rated internals, the first thing I did was put a Class 2 Pulse Laser Turret on the roof and got rid of the Class 1 Pulse lasers. It doesn't hit as hard as a fixed laser but you make that up in spades with sustained fire.

It's just an objectively pointless ship!

The Adder has three hardpoints - one of them medium - and can haul 20-odd tons without sacrificing the shield. It's not that much more expensive than the Hauler either.

Greyhawk - get an Adder and put a turreted multicannon on the class 2 hardpoint (when you have 1.3mcr! lol). Then laugh at the ships that try to interdict you.

2nded the Adder is a great ship for hauling cargo and can hold it's own in a dog fight. It's pretty good for exploring too with a reasonable jump range

Who needs salesmen These babies practically sell themselves!:D

Why? It is a great little exploring ship. I do it in a hauler without any problems, especially if one checks the security type of the system when they're heading back to give in the data. He's not trading, but exploring.

Personal preference. I just don't like it and I know he's exploring, but I feel the same about it's exploration capabilities so I threw my 2 cents in, though I didn't make that clear in my post for some reason.

Not for Zorgen-Peterson, no - I'm more of a Lakon/Faulcon de Lacey kind of player! (Although Core Dynamics did a great job with the Vulture, and the ZPS/Saud-Kruger monster that is the Fer de Lance is a great ship.

Allow me to point you to the Ed Shipyard:

Everything is there that you need to make your purchasing decisions. At the lower end of the scale, may I draw sir's attention to the excellent and venerable Faulcon de Lacey Cobra Mk. III.

As a general rule of thumb, we would recommend that more hardpoints are better on a small trading vessel, especially if sir does not intend to be touring the galaxy.

If you can't break the intradiction submit and get pulled out of hyperdrive. Imediatly put full power to engines and hit boost. Start barrel rolling using yaw and roll using boost as it recharges. Keep doing this till you can jump away. When trying to brake the intradiction stay in the blue throttle zone and make good use of yaw.

In the continuing saga of climbing the learning cliff - today I learned you can target other ships without losing your lock on your destination so I can see who those little lights are that fly around. Should come in handy to tell if one of them is about to interdict. Also today I learned how to mine using my shiny new Adder. Its very tedious and there's a good chance you will be killed - luckily the first belt I tried had nobody there, second belt had a few bad guys. Luckily I escaped them as it wasn't an interdict and I could FS out easily. Took me about an hour and a half to get 4 Rutile for a mission. Yes, I wont be bothering mining without a proper ship in the future but at least I know how to do it.

Also today I figured out what the numbers mean in the internal compartments screen. I found I could move my Cat 2 shield gen into a smaller bay and fit a size 8 cargo rack in the bay it used to be in. Also I found an old Joystick so I've started using that. Its making avoiding interdictions easier.

Oh yeah I also discovered headlook today. So been a productive day at least.

One other thing....Whymper Gateway in the HIP system near Lausonne - nearly 450,000 LS from the jump in point.....holy crud.

Glad things are beginning to fall into place for you.

If you think 450,000 ls is a long trip, don't, ever, go to Alpha Centauri ;)

If you press target highest threat when you're being interdicted it'll lock on to the ship interdicting you so you can see who it is and take measures accordingly.

Hauler is fine and a good progression to a cobra. And it is ok for exploration and many use it as such but in the hands of a relatively experienced pilot i would not want to risk losing seven hours of data in it. Successful running away requires some pretty quick reflexes

Personally I can't imagine why anyone would opt for either the Hauler or the Adder. That's what happens when you take ferry missions I guess, but Bounty Hunting is where its at. Easy money. Just take your stock sidewinder to the RES and an hour later you have enough for a Viper.

TBH I love games where there are alternatives. I've done all the PVP and so on many many times before. I'm bored with it. I want a game that rewards you for doing stuff with peace or in cooperation now. I've played all the X universe games, always as a trader, I tend to play open world games with the same mindset. To me, violence is the easy way but everyone plays the game exactly how they want. That's the beauty of these types of games and why I love sandbox games so much.

^This.

It takes a distinct lack of imagination to be unable to understand why someone might enjoy a different playstyle. It's like snipers in FPS games. Not personally what I would choose to do, but people clearly enjoy it as half the teams are bloody Wookiees sometimes.

Another option is to play in "Open" with a human friend tagging along who can gun down any interdictor. You can add me, and I'll wing with you if I'm online.

The Adder is a great ship. It's maneuverability has kept me from being interdicted. It's easy to keep the heat down and has enough firepower to defend itself. It just looks bad IMHO (I call mine the Puffer Pig).

And those bulletin board missions often establish favor which leads to higher paying bulletin board missions.

Combat to me isn't cost effective. Especially since I prefer to roll play in this game. As soon as FD implements eject systems I think all that combat hype will change because if you die, you start completely over. If you eject, then you have to worry about being rescued or captured. Right now, if you die, you just get back in the same ship at an insurance cost.

Different strokes for different folks but never forget that variety is spice!
