Graphics Need Updating

Did you custom colour your text..?
Cos I'm using "Elite Orange" forum Theme.. and I can't read your post..

odd..

The game looks very different to the outdated screenshots you provided. You should check your graphics settings, because my game does look realy good.

Don't get me wrong, improvements are always welcome, for example better LOD and asteroids when approaching would be great.

PS take a look at this post and the other screenshots in this thread:

That looks *** great!

Funny, I think the graphics in ED are great. I wonder whether, in fact, the planets in ED are actually more realistic looking than in other games such as SC etc? Not sure, but I would imagine that real life colours of many celestial bodies are probably quite pastel-y/washed out, and from the great distances of space, would look basically flat in most cases.

I suspect that some other games have taken a more cartoon like/exaggerated approach to their graphics, which is a valid design decision, but a different approach. Personally, I prefer a more realistic approach and perhaps that is why I like ED's graphics.

I might be wrong, just a theory.

Those example screenshots are from a beta. There have been a lot of improvements since then.

Please look at the texture resolution of BF2. They are awful for today's standard. There is no clear patterns, everything is very blurry.
But your post seems very biased by selecting these types of screenshots.

I could do the same:

Here is a screenshot from ED:

Here is a screenshot from BF2

There is a massive difference in texture resolution and quality.

What you need to know is, when comparing to games like SC. SC uses a pre-built engine... CryEngine. ED uses their own in-house engine called the Cobra engine, which FD designed and implemented themselves.

But if you are going to make comparison screenshots, I'd suggest looking at more recent screenshots, and not purposely choosing screenshots from pre-release builds.

And speaking of planet textures... Planets have different layers to them. They have an atmospheric layer too.

Or

Again... the screenshots you use are old and outdated.

If you can't tell the difference between texture quality on the first two screenshots I posted, or even the ones you posted, then you shouldn't be complaining about graphics.

What I would like to see in the game are some additional anti aliasing, and AF features. But textures in this game are great as they are.

Many people here think the graphics are great and fit the tone of the game. Yes improvements could still be made. Improvements can always be made.

From my perspective the much more important question is: do we want the devs to spend their resources to slightly improve the already good visuals or do we want them to add more content to the universe and more depth to the gameplay mechanics? I for one prefer the latter. If I am still around to play this game in a year, then it will be for the universe and the gameplay, not because the ships in ED have slightly more polgyons than the ships in SC.

Content is far more important than graphics at this point. The game looks fine, and I absolutely love it as it is. But I have to admit that if you're not a hardcore Elite fan it could seem quite a "dry" experience.

I'm really not keen on the decade long trend of games being glorious eye candy at the expense of actual soul (take a look at Rise, or compare GTA:San Andreas with GTA:IV). As long as the graphics are decent-to-good (and Elite:Dangerous are better than that already) there really much need to faff about with them.

Just look at the planets when you're flying around space for example, they have hardly any texture to them at all. They're very flat and one dimensional. All the colors feel washed out as well. ED lacks a realism and immersion feeling that's difficult to describe. When you compare it to something like Star Citizen it's pretty underwhelming.

I mostly find the graphics okay, but i do agree about the planets (and actually partly the suns), they appear too simple, and the textures lose detail when you get close to them. Hopefully planetary landings will lend more detail to them. I am currently holding off on doing exploration, hoping that the gfx will improve and that Oculus will release the CV1 so that i can get higher resolution :) (and before someone asks, yes i think the planets have a problem both in VR and on a monitor).

I wouldn't call the graphics 10 years old really. They are pretty good imo. Click for full res.

Having said that, things are always changing, especially when/where planetary surfaces and celestial objects are concerned. FDEV wants to produce more LoDs both for them, and for the game assets that will be viewable in the future from a first person perspective.

So, OP I think that they are working on improving them. Hope that helps, cheers..C:

I think the graphics are just fine, but as stated above, content is what is needed desperately in this game.

Some screenshots I took, this game is WAY beyond BF2

I will admits that they need to do some serious work on the LODs before we can walk around the stations, the debug camera exposes some pretty low res textures ( probably why they were reluctant to have any 3rd person for so long)

But on the whole from the cockpit the graphics are pretty bang on, very impressive effects IMO.

What the system of that outpost that is close to the planet?

As has been said, those screenshots are from beta. Here are some of my screens and the graphics aren't full (Well all full except AA)

The graphics are beautiful and still shots look fantastic, but the geometry and texture pop-in is pretty poor, especially given how little is being rendered at any one time. If they offered an option to reduce or even eliminate the dynamic LOD, that would improve things considerably in my opinion.

Don't see that planets are flat and washed out either if you get close enough. I think the graphics are fine and when you get closer than several million miles and slow down below break neck speeds!! things start to look great IMO

As for better graphics, nice for screenshots but many players already have to turn it down to play in open.

Shame we can't get any closer until we get planetary landings though
