Modes The Solo vs Open vs Groups Thread [See new thread]

I really don´t care about both Solo and Open game types. Personally I have always played Open because don´t see the point in doing the same but without the opprtunity of:
- Chatting with unknown commanders from around the world
- Winging with other people to help in their missions
- Arriving to stations full of real people
- etc, etc

So, the only thing I can add to this post is to people who only play in Solo mode, just try from time to time the Open mode, there is nothing to be afraid of (many will say it is not about being afraid but think about it again), it is a game where interacting with real people is the fun part!

But again, do whatever you want, who cares...

Of course many will say it's not about being afraid, because it isn't. It's about doing what is enjoyable, and for many any kind of unwanted player conflict is not enjoyable at all, potentially ruining the whole game. I'm like this; I will simply refuse to even try any game where I can't completely opt out of any and all non-consensual PvP, simply because I never could enjoy it and, after a decade trying, I'm quite certain I will never enjoy it in the future.

The existence of players like this is why the Mobius group exists and is so large, it's a place players can go to meet and interact with others without the unwanted conflict to ruin the experience.

To infer people are "afraid" is insulting and comes across as condescending.

I didn't buy the game to play with you, I didn't buy the game to play with random strangers.
As much as I respect other forum members, moderators and the Dev team, I bought this game to play with my real life friends - sorry to say, the afore mentioned, are not my real life friends (no offence intended folks).
So why should I share my limited online time, with people I do not know in real life (and again, no offence intended on the next part) and have no intention of getting to know.
My real life relationships are way more important to me than a random strangers.

I'm also getting real sick and tired of the high and mighty Open Mode players making accusations as to the character and manliness of those who do not play open

If i do, i'm accused of cheating, if i don't im "scared".
Really. Maybe the "open" group should discuss it internally before even thinking about a "solo vs. open" debate...

What gets me angry is the word "coward".

Coming from random internet people who have never met any of the people they are putting that label on, due to a preference in a COMPUTER GAME.

No idea who they are talking to, no idea what that person has done in their life... best I leave it there.

Oh, yes, back in the early pages, yes I recall where open players were ok to constantly insult non open players (actually using the word "cowards"), but if someone responded from the solo team... a ton of bricks did fall :(
(I have screen shots of the pages in question, plus a slew of PMs from various forum members and emails from the boards with all the info on - kept for my records due to things that cannot be talked about in public)

Though more recently the Mods have kept a handle on the name calling, the odd one gets through so it would seem, but at least that is fair and works both ways now ;) (unlike before)

I think "EvE Onlines" outlook on what they consider "PVP" gaming has ruined a lot of players. Eve cultivated the "Greifer" play style in such a way as to allow the mind set, it's quite a literally insulting to these types not to be invited to our gaming experience.

The best analogy I can use is this. I wouldn't want any strangers barging into my online gaming experience any more than I would allow strangers to barge in on my weekly poker game, at my house, with good close invited friends. If anyone did try to do this several things would most certainly ensue, including but not necessarily limited too, broken noses, broken teeth, possible broken bones, the outside possibility of someone getting shot, and most certainly the police being called. In a real life scenario, things get leveled very quickly, and would never be accepted. At least in my personal household.

I don't like the word coward either, especially as it's use to refer to me. Using it against me in real life, would have a very much different outcome, then some, "jerkoff" calling me that on line. As they have a computer to hide behind.

In the MMO world, were just suppose to be abused at will. Well "ED" doesn't stand for that, and I'm glad. Hopefully they will usher in a new foundation for all "MMO" to come. Actually I think this is what terrifies the PVP Crowd.
They may actually be forced to play in the spirit of the game, and that will never do for the hard core greifer types.

[*]Solo should be removed. It was boring anyway.

Oh could you imagine the upset if that happened? :D Not amongst the Solo players of course, but the pew-pew crew thinking they had finally enforced a wealth of helpless targets that they could seal-club at will. Their cries of exultation would be immense.

Of course, then the constant lag, disconnects, getting ganked by unseen enemies, routers dying, unwanted pizza deliveries, being turned into a node for unpleasant stuff, and eventually real nastiness - I can totally see why that was worth removing Solo. Yup, entirely worth it.

I will say it again.

If I go out for a night with my friends, and we go to a bar or restaurant where a couple of people are being jerks (and it only takes a couple) and it is ruining my time out with my friends, we leave the establishment. And, chances are, we will not be back. Especially when the management ignore our and other peoples complaints about the jerks. We will leave and go someplace where we can enjoy ourselves.

I do not want to spend my time with jerks around. So a lot of times, my friends and I will just get together at one of our houses where there is no chance of running into these people, no chance of being ignored by management, so we can enjoy ourselves.

My Friends and I have avoided places with never being there because people tell us how they were treated in a bar or restaurant, or how the jerks there made their night out a bad experience. Again, we don't want to waste our time with these people. We could go to a place a hundred times and have a good time, but that one time we have a bad time really colours our perception.
As they say, if you have a good experience with a business, you may tell a friend. But if you have a bad experience, you will tell all your friends, family, and every person that will listen.

That is exactly how I feel about Solo/Group and Open. And I am sure that will sum up a lot of peoples feelings on it. You and your friends can go out to the bar, but my friends and I will go somewhere else.

It is the same in the game. It only takes a couple of jerks to make a night of playing with friends a bad experience.

People have differing personalities. That's why we vote in different ways, listen to different music, why some play football, and why others prefer chess.

Frontier have embraced this diversity in people by including different game modes. Long may that continue.

I don't play in Mobius's group because I am afraid, or a coward. I play there because I am *bored* by PvP. I prefer the slow, steady grind of improving my character, usually through exploration or trading. I often have talk radio on in the background while doing this, and I enjoy listening to the programmes. I couldn't listen if I was constantly being interdicted.

I have no problem with others engaging in PvP, but please don't assume that I am defective in some way because I don't enjoy what you enjoy.

If solo/group mode was abolished, I'd stop playing Elite: Dangerous.

Cheers, Phos.

No point in getting angry, it's merely the default taunt - playground stuff!

Indeed whilst sometimes it gets my back up, when I think about it it is so comical to hear the word coward or scared thrown around. A mate of mine retired from the royal air force with honourable discharge getting called a coward by a spotty keyboard warrior.... Priceless really :D

I play in Solo and Mobius because that's the style of gameplay I backed in the Kickstarter, not the equivalent of a boardgame where your opponent sweeps all the pieces off the table whilst shouting, "I WIN I WIN I WIN".
Apparently, though, it's fear that keeps me out of Open. I've been shot at by real pirates off the coast of Somalia, but yeah, petrified by the pew-pew crowd :/
(The pirates ended up in a Kenyan jail and their vessels as flaming wrecks heading to the bottom of the sea, but maybe that's more relevant to the Crime Update Discussion thread :) )

I think the Pro's call this 'perspective'.
