Newcomer / Intro Should I buy a T6 and go trading?

Hi all

I am currently flying a Cobra (with my little Adder in storage). I have been flying a multi-role career so far and very much enjoying a blend of hunting bounties, running freight and exploration.

I can just about afford to buy a T6 but..... Flying a T6 sort of implies a more specific role.
Should I try my hand at Trading (with a bit of exploring for fun)?
If so how do I make it pay well and fun?
Ps I know nothing about rares / rare trading. Where do u find em? how do u find em? etc....

It will certainly change the way I play. At the moment, when running freight, if a get interdicted I throttle back, drop out of SC and think "bring it on!!" In a T6 I guess it is more like, drop chaff, run and pray?

Or...... do I stick with my Cobra until I can afford an Asp? :D

Cheers for your thoughts

This is the fun of the game, too many choices!

Do some searches on here to find out about trading and rare trading then make your decision. I would recommend not selling the Cobra as T6 trading as you correctly surmise is a pretty focussed thing to do and I certainly need a break every so often. You can worry about efficient ways of making money or having fun or mix it up - your choice.

Personally I'd ignore the ASP unless you want to go exploring. It carries little more cargo that the T6 and is not as good in combat as a Vulture. Next step up in trading is T7 or Imperial Clipper.

Getting a T6 is a great step on the road to an Asp. Not only will the 106T of cargo make you money quickly, the cockpit is almost identical. :)

A Vulture is what I plan to spend the proceeds of my currently occurring exploration trip (in an Asp) on :)

Dont sell your Cobra, not until you can afford an Asp and the kit that turns it from a brick into Cobra's mean big brother.
Wait a little until you can afford the T6, then give it a try. You only loose 10% if you really hate it, but a couple of rares runs and it will have covered that and then some. Cobra to Asp or Clipper (t7 is a waste of time) is a BIG jump without the T6 to fund it.

You can trade rares with the Cobra. Plenty of guides about that, so I won't repeat them. A bit of that or even a few hours BH should pay for the basic T6, and you can use that to determine if you want to keep it or not. I used it for long enough to pay for the Asp, then ditched it, as I didn't like being stuck in one activity when there's other things to do.

Well, the T6 is awesome for running rares, especially on the larger rares route - I had one where I could fill my 100 tonne cargo hold in my t6 on one leg of the route and then I filled about 60-70 on the return leg.

Its really all up to you - I went from a cobra (for trading rares) and my Viper (for BH) to the T6 specifically for rares trading. But, if you want to stick with multi role...idk, its hard to say - youll spend 1 mil on the T6 - but the Rares trading route Im talking about pays more than that per hour, so you can actually make that money back really fast. And honestly, the ASP is 6 million, less if you participate in the Exploration community goal and get the discount. 6 Mill is FAR away right now.

My OPINION is that you should try the rares trading in a t6 or even regular trading in the t6, Do NOT sell your cobra or any other ships, and you can always just switch back to do some combat if you want. But the 100t (or more depending on the size of shield you use) can really help out alot and get you to the ASP much quicker

Rares trading Routes, you can find some really big routes - I think the biggest route is like 40 something stops lol - but my route I did was about 6-8 stops per leg - Here is the link to a picture of the route I use
https://forums.frontier.co.uk/attachment.php?attachmentid=19729 - Now, the top section, instead of going to whichhaul to sell the rares from the bottom leg, I instead went to tanmark and sold there because at the time I could buy 35 Lucan Onion Head - And it still might be worth going in that direction because the station Harvest in a nearby system now sells Lucan Onion head - Just have to be careful going to Fed owned places, Lucan Onion Head is illegal in Federation places

Thanks for the advice!
I think I will give it a go as soon as I have a bit more money (to cover the insurance and a couple of upgrades)
I won't be selling my Cobra as I love her very much (and she is a great multi-role vehicle) you'll soon figure that I am a hoarder. I have even kept my little Adder.
I was aiming for the Asp ultimately as I love exploring. Maybe I'll pick up a Vulture before hand though to boost my BH ability...

What do the Python and Anaconda offer for all that money that can't be wrung out of the cheaper ships?

I don't know about the Anaconda, but the Python when fully kitted out for combat, is a beast with serious firepower:D

More cargo space, bigger weapons...

Plus if you get an Anaconda you have won!!! the game

<sarcastic ;) smiley>

ha ha! I'm more likely to end up flying the space going equivalent of the bag of lemons :p

I have taken on a couple but they were flown by incompetent NPC's

In the T6, head to the frontier stations.

No one else goes there (well, very few do), so there are almost no pirates and very, very few CMDRs in general. Additionally, the lack of player trading gives you lots of pristine trade routes to exploit without worrying about the T9 and Anaconda posse killing it.

Search for high population industrial systems (pure industrial work best) and look at the surrounding 30LY for extraction and refinery systems, preferably also with high populations. You might also want to look for high tech with extraction/refinery companions, but they are rather thin on the ground out on the fringes of human space. If you can find one, substitute it for the industrial, or even add it to the trade run. The credits will start rolling in very quickly once you work out the best commodities to trade, and the high populations mean the prices don't crash under sustained pressure.

And while I concur that trading in an Asp might be a waste of credits compared to a T7, there's something in knowing that your A5 shield with boosters can tank it out against most foes, and you have the firepower to give "no" for an answer when interdicted by CMDRs. In fact, you might find that humans won't bother interdicting you at all for that very reason.
