thank you, yes you

I've owned pretty much everything up to and including a Python (ya, even a Clipper) and I have to go with the Asp as the best cockpit. That view looking down, as you're flying over a star or a planet, makes you feel like you're in a technological bubble just zipping through space. Love the look of the thrusters as you manoevre too.

I completely agree - just a shame the sound has been changed - I loved the whole rapsy sound you got when throttling back; almost gone now.

I want that sound back !!!!!!

Nosh

I too got mine last weekend. on a screen (it may be better on 3 of them with track IR) but on a single screen without tracking the difference in ships is just a slightly different hud, withmore/less armour and faster/slower speeds.

but in VR imo you get to truly feel the difference in the ships, and the whole size of everything makes sense.

go back to the eagle after a few hrs in the clipper or asp, or any of the haulers and if you are anything like me you will feel a little clostrophic at 1st. No other gaming device is capable of that that i have seen.

Yes.. exactly. The other night I had to play on my monitor for about a half hour (timed mission) while I was working on some issues with my DK2... I could BARELY stand playing in 2D on a monitor. I can honestly say i will never be able to play a game like this without VR ever again. The monitor experience was flat and completely uninspiring. I don't know how I played this game for 3 months on the monitor to start with.

It amazes me how many times I have read this same thing about OR users not being able to play on a 2D monitor anymore - multiple places across this forum. I figure there is either a dozen forum members who have stock in OR and have agreed to say the same thing, or *gasp* maybe it really is THAT good :).

I had a skin infection 3 weeks ago and so had to lay off the rift. I wanted to crack on with elite so went back to my monitor/telly (its 70 inch so great for gaming). for the 1st hr it was rubbish. Truth is tho, after that I sort of forgot about it, and did enjoy it for what it was.

but after 10 days of 2D, putting my rift back on was like going "home" again......... They naysayers objectively are right. its hard to argue about the resolution or the SDE, not to mention the DK2 is not the most comfortable thing...... but all that aside, its the experience of the thing which just grabs me.

the CV1/VIVE if they have ironed out most of the DK2 flaws however will truly be something else.... and once the consumer HMDs are out whilst maybe not everyone should buy one.... exeryone at least owe it to themselves to TRY one.

Its a tad off topic, but I had to drive my Lads car into work this morning ,he's only just learning to drive so its a really small 1ltr citron with L plates.
I sat in the drivers seat and thought to myself OMG this feels like getting into an Eagle.... (I normally fly a Big Nissan... I mean I normally drive an ASP.... )

You are exactly correct. It isn't the end-all of end-alls... there ARE downsides to the DK2... but cmon, it's only a developer's kit for christ's sake, right? It's NOT a finished product. It practically says right on the box that it ISN'T a complete finished product, not even close. It's purpose is for developers to start developing 3d VR support for applications, so by the time VR is actually released, the devs know how the SDK works, and how to include support for these headsets. It's purpose is to jumpstart the application community ahead of the hardware community so we actually have something to do IN the headset once they come out. Those of us that have done our homework know exactly what we are getting into, when we start in VR with a dk2.

1. Resolution is UNDER half what you get on a 1080p monitor
2. SDE sucks... you may start to notice it less and less after a while, but it's always there
3. The foam around the HMD sucks... irritates my skin, and makes my nose itch
4. You need to be semi-decent at tweaking in windows
5. You will be fighting frame rates like never before in your gaming life
6. You have to peek out from under your nose to find the "home row" on your keyboard to type
7. You smack your face into things on your desk as you spin around in your cockpit, gaping in awe at what is now completely surrounding you
8. You will be constantly getting greasy face prints on the lenses, and will be constantly cleaning them off with your microfiber towel
9. A loud noise in the real world will scare the CRAP out of you while in the rift. Once my dog jumped on my lap and I almost had a heart-attack.
10. I dropped my antlion mic right into my soda glass once

But having said that... and even with ALL those things in front of you... it's STILL by FAR AND AWAY... the most amazing gaming experience I have ever had. It's worth the price in dollars, AND all the little annoyances that come with it.

Cpt America - Another great post, thank you for laying all that out. I just figured out how to + REP, so one out to you. But curious as I have not yet been able to talk myself into the Rift (as I have to buy an entire PC also). #6? Why do you have to peek out? Cant you put your hands down and feel out the raised nubs on the F and H keys and touch type from there?

Thanks

Yes of course.. but half the time my keyboard isn't where it was last time I pushed it out from me in the middle of my cockpit... Its quite a bit faster to do a quick peek to find a reference spot, THEN I feel for the little dots. Works just fine. And even though it is a tiny bit of a pain... I couldn't care less. It would take an AWFUL lot more then those kinds of small annoyances to overshadow the awesome experience of ED in VR.
