ED & 3DTVs

Hi,

I saw the dev diary and it says support for 3D TVs:D I'm thinking of getting as Panasonic TX-P50VT30 or TX-P55VT30 plasma. They are compatible with the 3D shutter glasses I have already. A huge 50/55 inch screen. I'm wondering will it be proper 1080P60 like Blu-ray 3D or the 1080 divided to display two frames like Sky3D?

Thanks
Haider

No idea yet, But if you do get the Tv and it has the 2D to 3D conversion, the Capital Ship video looks pretty good. :D

I have 3D ready graphics card and monitor, wasn't aware that they had mentioned that ED would be 3D compatible, great news :D

I can't believe i didn't try it until now... my Samsung 8 series tv does 2d to 3d and woah!!!
The cockpit scenes really do look great in 3d.

Might be ditching my 27" monitor and dragging my TV upstairs he he he. :D

I know, the Hud really pops out of the screen.

I could be wrong but I dont think you can do FULL 1080p 3D on a 3D TV (for gaming).

It is a limit to the HDMI inputs on the set, the max it can for 1080P 3D at is 24hz - fine for movies, rubbish for gaming.

I think the best bet will be a horizontal split, or 960x1080 60hz

This makes the most sense to me as it is essentially how the occulus rift will work I believe.

This is a way better solution than Nvidia 3DTV play provides which is 720P and looks (comparatively) rubbish (good way to compare is Trine 2, as that supports native 960x1080p 3D in game and also is supported by 3DTV play. the native support is clearly superior.

Capital ship video in 3D? You have my attention...

The laptop that I bought for Elite has some NVidia "3D Vision" glasses (and screen for 3D). I played the Medusa demo so it definitely does 3D - how do I get to see the Capital ship video (and HUD) in 3D also?

Elite is currently setup (as in my development build) to render side-by-side 3D. I've yet to look into what are the most common TV modes we need to support. Via displayport I can get it to do 120hz 1080p (so 60hz per eye)

side by side native 1080p 60hz i think pretty much all active 3D TVs support (not sure about passive as the 3D resolution is already halved with those)

but for active sets honestly this is way to go (and is about the max data bandwidth HDMI can support), rather than it being support via nvidia or AMD's 3D tech (partly because as a user you have to pay for that ability) but also becasue in the case of nvidia you have to go down to 720p for 3D on a telly.

this involves scaling which is not as good as simply splitting the image and halving the pixel count in the horizontal axis and keeping the vertical untouched. but god knows why i am saying that you as I am sure you know a hell of a lot more than me on it ;)

In my case the PC is running through a 3D tv that attempts to convert standard tv to 3D, it's not true 3D but it's not bad.

Now if as Greg said they can do a SBS version of the game maybe at some point we'll get a 3D demo?:D Greg? Greg? (HINT,hint) :D

For HDMI you need v1.4b equipment. This supports 3D at 60 fps per eye. Unfortunately the Radeon HD 7950 only has HDMI version 1.4a. Basically your videocard and display need to have HDMI version 1.4b ports for 3D 60 fps per eye. My tv Panasonic tx-p50vt20 only has HDMI v1.4 ports. I'm not sure of TVs and videocards that support v1.4b HDMI ports. Hope this helps you understand the HDMI versions. You also need to use a high speed HDMI cable. Most cables are as 1080p60 2D mode needs a high speed HDMI cable.

HDMI v1.4
HDMI v1.4a
HDMI v1.4b standard released mid 2011.
HDMI v2 2013

I have a passive display and this has also this conversion functionality. But for gaming you should try Tridef (as an AMD user i got 50% off) or at least the trial. It is worth it. Since then I never touched this 3D-"button" on my remote again :)

Somehow this sounds so odd to me? How can horizontal split of 960x1080 be better quality then 720p which is 1280x720?

960x1080 seems to have a square ascpect ratio (fewer horizontal pixels). I couldn't stand going back to square screens for playing games. Same for movies.

I'd pick 720p (at 60hz) for both gaming and watching movies in 3D. Widescreen experience above all.

because 720p entails scaling, where as 960x1080 (x2) is still 1:1 pixel mapped

like I said suck it and see...... get trine 2 and do a taste test (I think it may even be on offer on steam at the moment (and totally as an aside is a work of art and should be able to convince anyone 3D in gaming has potential)) , I have compared it on a few setups and 720p has always been the inferior display.

I wish I could test it! This sounds so unlogical. There is no scaling involved in 720p I think? It has same aspect ratio like 1080p. Just set your resolution at it and play your game. Why else do other systems like PS3 use 720p for 3D?

I really cant think a reason why stretching 960 to 1920 would be superior to true 1280.

Thanks for your arguments though.

I'm still not happy with it - 3D introduces some issues for user interface and other bits. Once they are sorted and the art guys are happy - then I'll let you all know :)

Since your the pro here could you shine why its preferred using Half Side by Side 960x1080 over framepacked 720p 3D? Maybe also for movies which are cut down to usually 1920x800 because of the way its filmed right?

(In general for 'normal' displays or projectors. Not just for the Rift or other headsets)

Thank you in advance :)

Interesting, I've just got a Radeon 7870...:D
