Game seems to be coming along nicely..BUT

Seems like a good idea to only make alpha available to those very committed customers. I was a big Wing Commander fan and actually never played the old Elite games. I recently sold all of my ships for SC and moved here. After seeing ED's gameplay, features and especially this community, I feel much more comfortable here. I'm in my 40's so I like the laid back and respectful atmosphere here. I know many here also backed SC so I don't want to go into why I left except to say that money has become too much a focus for my tastes.

ED looks awesome, the community seems great and I hope to be a productive member and friend to everyone here. :)

Hey, welcome aboard commander, we hope you enjoy the experience!
Hopefully Elite and we the community will make you feel as though you made the right choice. :)

LOL Can't. 80 pounds is over $160.00 in my currency, which is a heck of a lot to spend on a "game". I'm fine with not being in alpha :) I'll let you guys deal with incompatibilities and framerate issues, while I (in beta) just deal with gameplay issues, or buggy quests :D

If it was US$100.00 then yeah it won't be too much of a problem for me... but British Pounds are really high in the currency exchange rates.

Actually I meant adding 20£ so you can join the first round beta. I didn't pledge for Alpha either cause in my opinion it is not a good bargain to add so much money for getting only one more month of testing. And just like you, I prefer to hunt for large scale bugs :D

I think a lot of people confuse alpha, beta and gamma with early access. It's not, these are testing phases. I'm the kind of person who waits for a couple of patches before I buy a game. I'm still waiting to buy SimCity 2013. I'll play Elite Dangerous the way David Braben and the team meant it to be played.:D Until then I'm just spending on the Behemoth to make sure it is up to the job.

well I have just added another £100 to my pledge to get into the alpha testing phase of the game. I have never been involved in a testing phase of a game and I my work has just fallen through so have lots of time on my hands. While I appreciate that the game might not be playable during the testing phase if I can be of use to FD then it is money well spent!

Wow that's saying a lot already about your commitment to ED. I for one was an avid follower on SC for many months before realising a lot of things SC wasn't but that I fanatically refused to accept (like many still there thinking SC will deliver seamless planetary dogfighting and procedural worlds)

Many SC fans there are wanting an ED experience without admitting as much and this is causing a lot of fanboy threads about features that will never see the light of day there. Not to mention SC devs are not required to take any fan suggestions and instead march along steadily towards CR vision of his ultimate game. This might be compatible with the preferences of many but there will be some left craving for a greater experience. These however will more than likely find their way here in the coming months. I just hope we grow steadily with like minded people such as yourself and not swell suddenly after EDs successes into something unrecognisable. Or be overtaken by some ill-mannered Eve type community spirit.

Anyways, Welcome to the forums!

I think alpha tests will be very important - as they cover *core* aspects of the game, like combat, docking and trading - and it is very good to see you will have time to test it properly (sorry about your job btw). Many people have pledged for alpha but actually won't have time to do it. So it's great that you have :)

Have you checked your min requirements already?

ED will be a success when its released. SC is a success now, before its release, (and will be a spectacular failure after)

THis game is where it will be at.. Atleast david has not used a FPS engine to create a space game LOL

Thanks for the welcome Riandor and MarcusAurelius! :)

I expect massive amounts of complaining and negativity on the SC forums during its alpha. I haven't been here long but those that will access the ED alpha seem to be committed to development mainly, and not just getting cheap access to play the game early.

One of the biggest things that struck me when I first looked at this site was the lack of guild recruitment forums. I'm so accustomed to joining a guild, even in advance of release, that I kept looking through the categories thinking I missed it. I really had to take a step back and re-think this oddity. Now I'm thinking that I need to take a personable approach in the community and in-game, to meet and get to know people. I really like this and look forward to forming many friendships doing something we all have in common.

I hate to be overly positive but I feel like this is home so thanks again for the warm welcome!

Ummm, I am not exactly sure but Cheap and Alpha, at least in ED, should not be used in the same sentence to reference each other.

The kickstater and the funds given are really more of a 'I like the idea of this game and want to support its production' rather than 'I want to buy a pre-order and get in to alpha'

Alpha starts this month, December, and the retail release is in 2014 so not long to wait. So maybe go for the beta or wait until the release. Otherwise I suggest you go for the £80 pledge level as it offers the most for the money. The game plus updates/expansions.

;)

Back in the day - joining a guild involved soldering up a null modem cable for a friend who would "loan" you their copy of Populous or Armour-geddon ;)

Times have changed since then, a game with real multiplayer was a rarity, now people take it for granted. We've come quite some way :)

Im still interested in what they are doing in this game, LOVE the HUD and cockpit design, give more of a simplistic almost utilitarian look. Gives me that almost "evochron-esqe feel.

Well we havent actually seen anything in game yet, all we have seen is a pre-rendered impression of what the game 'might' look like in the form of a capital ship video - but none of that is in game footage. I wasnt aware of that until somebody mentioned it on the X-Rebirth Steam forum and I watched the latest dev diary again to see for myself. At the moment nobody has seen anything from in game yet!

I think its about time we did, don't you? All of these pledges and not a single thing in game to be seen yet. Are they going to have anything to alpha test is my question. Its supposed to be this month isnt it?

We have seen it. Dev Diary #8 have at least four episodes where they demo two developers playing ED pre-alpha using X-52 HOTAS, mostly action in asteroid field.

Also most of the footage for the earlier Damocles video was rendered from in game footage. It was only the cockpit and various post processing on top that is obviously not in game. However the demo footage in the latest dev diary is all in game and looking damn close if not better than the Damocles video in my opinion.

I guess you can always wait until release, or chance that the prices for beta will be lower when the new store opens up the 9:th December. Beta access in the new store won't have any of the other benefits and rewards though.

Personally I think the £80 reward is a steal since that grants you free expansions for life. It's only available until the new store opens though then the ship will have sailed. I honestly think people are going to kick themselves later for not getting that one when they had the chance if they pass up on it now. ;)

Depends of course - If no DLC's come out for example, or two at £10 each? All an (educated) gamble really :)

It looks just awesome I must say, I usually go nuts where you fly-by that canister, head look really adds to this game :) Btw, for clarification, how old this footage was? As I understand you created art diary for longer time than expected due of pre-alpha crunch.

Good luck!

There have been clarifications that expansions will be fully priced due of huge amount of work needed for them, and that there could be at least two - walking and landings.
