General / Off-Topic What on earth is with all the "Whilst" - ing?

College educated dude here with an engineer for a father. Surrounded, to a degree, by proper English users.

Lol, no harm intended... But what is with everyone in forums these days using "whilst" as they write? Is this a space thing? Ha! Did "while" get tossed out the window?

Anyone else slightly... Um... lightly... annoyed.. err... amused with this?

Friendly question here, just trying to understand usage whilst reading these here pages ;)

Whilst I understand your annoyance, it's used quite a lot in the UK.

While and whilst mean the same when we use them as conjunctions. They both mean ‘during the time that something else happens’, or ‘in contrast with something else’. While is much more common than whilst, and whilst sounds more formal: Would you like something to eat while we’re waiting? (less common: … whilst we’re waiting?) (during the time we’re waiting)

British English prefers an ‘s’ for words like realise, compromise and industrialise, while American English prefers ‘z’ (realize, compromize, industrialize). (less common: … whilst American English prefers ‘z’ …) (expressing a contrast between British and American English)

Whilst I alone did call upon thy aid,
My verse alone had all thy gentle grace,
But now my gracious numbers are decay'd
And my sick Muse doth give another place.
I grant, sweet love, thy lovely argument
Deserves the travail of a worthier pen,
Yet what of thee thy poet doth invent
He robs thee of and pays it thee again.
He lends thee virtue and he stole that word
From thy behavior; beauty doth he give
And found it in thy cheek; he can afford
No praise to thee but what in thee doth live.
Then thank him not for that which he doth say,
Since what he owes thee thou thyself dost pay.

I've had to relax a bit regarding reading forum grammar and spelling, and my wife doesn't think much of mine either.
I put it down to writing quickly, and maybe English as a second language.
.
Its - It's - it is, their - there - they're - they are, etc......
