General / Off-Topic What on earth is with all the "Whilst" - ing?

I hate to say it but I think American is a purer form of English, because of the French influence in the UK, I would really like to be wrong about this 😊

Whilst I understand what you are saying I think you may have forgotten English is spoken by more than one country. What is correct or not depends to whom you are talking.

Everyone should speak proper like what I done. ;)

Pity the poor Canadian here - I get stuck having to learn both US and UK English and constantly interchanging them depending where I am and what I'm doing. ;)

English might be the mutt of languages (due to its influences from other languages and whatnot), but Canadian is the mutt of English ;)

Ah, it's one of those things that separates us (as well a an enormous pond). A common language.

Honest question, but what does mutt mean?

ha, just worked out "college" means US style university, NOT British Public school. If OP had been to HMP <insert public school name> he would have not even noticed. Tally-ho boys!

To OP - Decent British Backing of this game, Alpha and Beta community being a pretty "matured" vintage and many were playing Elite back in the 80's, hence the perchance for the Queen's English on many of these threads and the whimsical word play we sometimes see. To be honest, i think it is great we have such a broad church of nationalities, and IMO all forms of the written English, whilst sometimes not perfect "old english", are welcome, if well intended and polite(or cheeky;) )

Just lets not get into the Oxford Comma discussion please....

You can't say "Can't" in Canada!

As an American, I like 'whilst'. I've long advocated for 'whither', 'hither', and 'thither' to be welcomed back with open arms, too. 'Whom' needs to be put in a dinghy shoved out to sea, however.

What's that all aboot, eh?

Whilst I'm an ex-pat Brit living in Canada, I love the fact that these forums use British English. So refreshing given most the forums I visit are based in the US.
Makes me homesick especially when you guys start talking about food.

I also relish the British accents of the computer on all the spaceships and spaceports.
Please never change that. Too many games have American accents!

@OP: where are you from....just curious?

Did you mother never teach you to say on the morning after the night before, "with whom have i had the pleasure?"! Honestly, there is no poorer manners as to not ask the lady name and WHOM is the only way to deliver it, try it with "who" and it just does not work.
