holy crap.. just got a warthog...

walk into a store, ask for $400 worth of awesome, and this is what you get. ten pounds of metal, buttons, switches and multi-directional hats. If I could replace my mouse with this thing, I would.


I haven't even plugged this thing in yet, and I'm already wiping the drool off it.

the problem -- I'm traveling out of the country tomorrow. So I only have a few hours tonight after I clear the work off my desk to play with the thing (and that's assuming ZERO sleep).
I know this is not the easiest thing in the world to set up, I know everyone has their own preferred mapping ... I just want to use the damn thing tonight, I'll play around with it when I get back. Are there any quick start guides/decent mappings I can use, just to get the flavor of this thing?

please, set aside the "use the search" comments... every minute here is precious. Have pity on me.

There is a salve you can get to clear that up. The local computer store near me sells them for 157.00 though, you may have overpaid a bit.

That is probably great advice. I wouldn't have thought of it, I suspect. I'll keep it in mind for down the road when I upgrade, myself.

I actually prefer the X-55, because it has universal switches and buttons that aren't marked specifically for the A-10C.
I do play DCS A-10C with it and it works great. I can actually map more functions to the X-55 because it has more switches and knobs then the Warthog does.

Let's keep this a "give jmg as much play time tonight" and not a "X55 vs. warthog" thread. I'll dive into those threads on the plane.

Or buy a sidewinder or eagle, take it out to the Nav beacon, fly around, shoot a bit until you're used to it. Practice docking and un-docking as often as you like. If you die rebuy is just a few hundred credits :)

As you'll spend hours fiddling with the setup (and you've not even loaded TARGET yet to play around even more) check out here - https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=22379 for how some others have set it up. There may be a TARGET profile, but in all honesty you don't really need one now unless you want to use the full 200 odd switches it gives you.

I've changed setup three or four times since june, and this is excellent advice. It takes time to retrain the muscles. When I changed from game pad to joystick I sucked for a few days while the muscles retrained. The same when I added a CH Pro Throttle to the Joystick.

Oh, and just wait till you try the Thrustmaster programming language - that gives you lots of possibilities to fiddle with the setup

The Warthog is an incredible piece of kit. I upgraded last year from the X-55, and it really is substantially better. More solid, more precise... the X-55 feels flimsy to me in comparison.

It's not really that hard to set up, but you will spend a lot of time tweaking things to get them just where you want them.

It has a different feel from most sticks... a little stiffer. It will take a bit of getting used to. Once you do get used to it, though, you'll feel more in command of your ship than before.

This is one of those things where you get what you pay for. It's expensive because it really is that good.

The lack of yaw on the stick is bothersome to me (well my wife actually), because if she sees me bringing in pedals, game over, man!

No twist provides for a more precise feel on the stick, and performing yaw on another set of limbs is fantastic. yes, there is quite the cost associated with running a warthog + pedals.

That is the only thing holding me back at the moment. I have not seen shops sell the Warthog so I have to assume the worst possible price ordering online with shipping; with such a huge reliance on twist with my x52, I will need(want) the pedals. To upgrade to the Warthog will be about a $600 minimum purchase.

As a DCS A-10C player, I reallllllly want that stick though. The other issue would be getting a proper desk setup to use the Warthog properly, as it is much more rigid as far as I have heard.

I am desperately acquiring all my toys before any new ladies get into my life. It is bad enough that my music equipment is surpassing the 11k mark...

I've got the Saitek pedals, but if were to do over I'd go with CH - the Saitek are flimsy and feel terrible, but they work.

I'm on the waiting list for a Slaw Device set - hopefully for May delivery - but they cost more than the Warthog set so aren't for everyone...

These use Hall Effect to determine stick and throttle positions and are a whole new level of accuracy from typical stuff.

Also - there are modifications you can make to springs on the joystick if you find them too stiff.

Plenty of YouTubes that show possibilities.

I use a x52pro. It's now obvious I've been disrespecting ED.
Thanks for the info, I'll check out the pedals.
