I did good (I think)!

I did something yesterday which I think we might look at doing, as it helps increase satisfaction (to the experienced players) and helps out newbies (nice players are probably doing this already). I was trying out my new Anaconda at a Nav Beacon, when a player in an Eagle turned up. He had been in the game for 2 days, and was enjoying it, but could see that there was a lot of hard work ahead. We winged up, and very quickly he started to get the benefits of this. First we took down some 'wanted' NPCs (a couple were big enough that he would have avoided them on his own, but now were fair game), and his bounty vouchers started flowing in. Then we did some trading, and he was surprised at the trade vouchers, and the amounts (around 30Kcr each trip. I think that FD got this right, in that 'smaller' players get the bigger pay-outs, as they need the help, plus I don't need so much, as I get a bigger profit). After a few hours his Eagle was a lot more powerful, he had learnt a few tricks (including a good trade route), and his enjoyment of the game had increased. He wants his friend to get ED, so they can work together, and get out amongst the stars. What I got was the satisfaction in knowing I helped a newbie to get going a bit faster than he was doing, and to learn a bit more in the way of the game. I intend to help out every newbie I encounter, if they want my help, as the more people who enjoy ED the better.

That's very nice of you. It's certainly a better welcome to the universe than ramming someone to death, or inderdicting them, disabling their engines and stealing their cargo.

I haven't played in open mode yet, I'm solo until I get confident that I know what I'm doing, but I've always been helpful to newbies as well. I used to spend hours in EVE teaching them how this worked and how that worked, giving them 20 million credits to buy the learning skills (before they removed learning skills), helping them kill Dagan and so on.

This is the kind of thing I try and do and will be doing once I'm done exploring
-
Those first experiences are what drive people to play the way they do, if people are being attacked from the word go they will likely develop the same outlook and attack weaker ships when they become powerful
-
So hopefully he will remember the experience and decide to do the same one day

Fantastic... Big plus rep - you have inspired me to do the same later tonight...

This is a great idea, I have been inspired too! +1 to you & OP.

Do some players still start in Cosi, like I did? I might head "home" this weekend, to give a little bit back :D

+1 rep
Isn't this better than shooting new players for kicks?

Not at all. False sense of security. Just help them out and chat to them until their Contact shows about 200,000Cr in bounties.

The blow them out the sky!! It's only an Eagle after all! :D

PS Just kidding. Great thread. I might have just ruined it.

In that Case

I hand over 1 bazzillion rep to the Alpha/Beta players (in particular as they are obviously the most experienced) on the gamerscove teamspeak. Because as far as I know, practically every new player who has joined, has had a little leg up in the form of gold/palladium drops, trade routes for all starter vessels and in recent times trading bonds.

Not millions, but enough to get to perhaps a hauler or adder or kit out what they were flying as in your case.

That has been going on since I joined in beta - of course it was easy then 'cos it was easy to make money in beta, but since release, EVERY player who has joined has found this level of assistance.

Yes its much better than killing newbies in a pimped <x>.

Well done that man! Have a Rep.

30k Creds? Is that all a trade voucher is worth? :-/

That's depressing - especially when you consider the trader is making hundreds of thousands per trip. He is basically laughing at his escort who has to make the same dull trip repeatedly without any kind of decent reward for the efforts.
Even more so if he has to do the fighting in the event of interdiction!

As nice as this is, I think it's funny that this is seen as a novel idea in a multi player game. Grouping with other players is what happens in most pve mp games I've played but in this galaxy it's a special occasion :)
