X55 Rhino Button Layout with Reference Card

Got it to work a couple of times! I believe it was just user error. I will report back if otherwise. Thank you, and good luck in your adventures.

For me it's working very well. But when I play online and the docking request gets denied, I can't use the auto docking switch a second time for another request. I then have to do it manually.

@Aussiedroid: yesterday I had some strange behavior again with the H3 button:
the profile in the Saitek software was loaded.
the button showed reaction in the Saitek software
but in the game the button didn't show any reaction.
i then tried to remap the H3 (the upper one of the grey 4/8 way switches on the throttle) but even that did not work. The button just showed no reaction in the game

did you ever experience the same?

Does anyone else find the X55 rather cumbersome and awkward? I played for about four hours last night on my new HOTAS and just couldn't shake the feeling that I could do better. It could just be that it is new to me, but I don't know. It seems like a lot of the buttons and HATs are just not placed correctly.

Has anyone made the switch from the X52 to an X55? I like having all the button and switch options, but I have a feeling it will take quite some time to get comfortable with the button positioning.

I find the throttle brilliant (including buttons), but the ergonomics of the buttons on the stick is a joke compared to properly designed sticks like the Warthog.

Of the buttons on the stick, the two lower hats and the front triggers are all fine, but the uper hat and the red pushbutton, as well as the red button on the side, are all unusable without shifting your grip (which you should never have to do)

I have found a mapping that works for me, but the button layout on the stick could have been done SO much better.

I purchased a spacer which makes a world of difference in being able to reach all of the buttons and hats on the top of the stick.

It's kind of ironic that they printed 'No Step' on the stick just above the hand rest, when a 'step' is exactly what's needed, like the Cyborg Evo Pro.

I will be shortly after my existing one is RMA replaced.

I have had problems with buttons since it was unboxed, the software causes BSOD - it seems to flood the keyboard buffer with the output from faulty keys, occasional ghost keys and now the twist is sticking.

So yeah you want to buy my new replacement off me on that reccomendation - I'll sell it to you.

It will be brand new and unboxed and I have heard that people who have had replacements are much happier with the new kit they got. I just had enough of their support asking every three months if a problem I reported still exists when they have done liteerally nothing to resolve the problem!!

anyways that's my excuse for splurging an extra 100 quid on the warthog!!

Probably about 2 weeks to send it back and get a replacement.

I've got to get me one of these sticks.
Anyone selling ?

Thanks jgm, will definitely have a look into getting one as well.

I imagine the red pinky button will become slightly less accessible/convenient, but everything else should get a lot better.

You're not alone. I've just bought an x55 to replace my X52 and boy, am I finding it difficult. You're right, the buttons and HAT positioning is awful compared to the X52. I can see myself getting cramp in my thumb really easily. I also find the palm/hand rest painful after a while. I'm going to have to put some spongy material on that thing.

As for the throttle. Too stiff. Button placement on the rear of the throttle is all wrong, I keep clicking them accidentally. on the X52, I could fill my hand with the throttle, not so on the X55.

I could go on...

With all its ergonomic faults (and there are a quite a few) the build quality and the feel of the the X55 is so much better than the X52, and this is the only reason I'll persevere with it. but my old X52 is going nowhere, just in case...

You can change the stiffness of the throttle with the grey dial on the left-hand side of the base of the throttle

Yeah, I know about the dial and I've adjusted it. I think there's to much gunk on the mechanism though.

It's not that bad I suppose, but I do miss the indents.

Looks like I may end up having to RMA the X55. After a few hours of play the red pinky button (#15) started working intermittently and then stopped working all together. Tried reboots, different USB ports, and powered HUB (wasn't having power or ghosting issues at all) and so on. I'm sure I could live without that red pinky button, but it should work for $200. The pinky "trigger" feels like it is going to snap in half as well.

Galaxy Map Search and Zoom Issues

For those of you using Aussiedroid's truly well-planned layout, you may be having the same trouble I was. Namely, you couldn't search the galaxy map, and zooming with the mouse had stopped working. Fear not, for I, like any self-respecting nerd, went through line-by-line and started disabling things. Mercifully I found the culprit at the bottom. If you clear out the setting for Galaxy Map Zoom Axis, you will once again be able to search.

The problem I was having was that whenever I clicked in the System Name field, the field would highlight for a split second and then deselect. Binding a key to UI Select only highlighted briefly as well, and holding it down made an interesting light show but not much more. Using the mouse to zoom out was a different affair. I like the comfort of using the mouse to look around the galaxy, but the zoom out was on a rubber band. Anyway, if that's happening to you, go into keybinds, select Galaxy Map Zoom Axis, and hit Escape. Problem solved.

See you in the void.

Hey Panzenkoros,

Thanks for sharing your feedback (and your kind words)!

I know I had the Galaxy Map Zoom on two sets of buttons. The scroll wheel on the throttle and the two top buttons (H & I). Does sound like a limitation/issue on Elite sides of things but wonder if both were causing issues or just one? I'll have a look myself over the weekend and see if I can replicate the issue or find another solution as it would be good to still have those mapped as needed :)

Even though I have mapped all of the Galaxy map to the HOTAS, I generally go back to Mouse since its quicker to navigate around, hence why I probably haven't noticed the issue you describe.

Anyways .. thanks again!

Ps. I welcome anyone else's feedback on my profile, weither it be an issue or an improvement you can suggest. Cheers!

No I haven't experienced the same. Actually not one issue with those macro keys personally.

It might be good to see if you can see if those macros work on another hat switch or toggle or something (if havent tried). In the Saitek profile you can reassign the macro to any key and see if it works (Just remember what you are overriding offcourse :)) For example, maybe try swapping H3 & H4 and see if the results are the same.

Before you try that though, after you load the profile, go into Saitek software and Save and then Reapply the profile to the controllers (the target looking button I think it is). I say this as when I was setting up the controller, the software sometimes seemed to loose my newer settings saved. I would have to reload and then reapply for it to work again. Saitek software seems a bit buggy like that.

Oh and on the Autodocking, there is an outer limit for requesting docking. It used to be 7.5km, but I think it was increased to 12km. I think it also varies depending on the station type. I get caught out with that sometimes too :)

my trouble

Hi Aussiedroid

I'm new commander for elite:dangerous, since I bought my new X55 I try to use your key binding set v1.31.

Basically it works well for me but there are some trouble.
Sorry for my English Im not native :(

1. on Galaxy map , I can't type any word in search window(when i click seems blinking white and gray)
2. on both Galaxy map and system maps , it seems always keeping zoom in. If I use mouse center wheel to zoom out, then automatically zooming in again.

so please kindly tell me your opinion what is root cause and where I can find and fix setting.

Thanks in advance. sorry again for my poor english

Welcome CMDR!

1) This was brought up with me today by another user above (Panzenkoros) who identified that this is an issue. They removed the bindings which allowed them to enter text. I'm going to look into this and see if there is something that can be done, but in the mean time this is the workaround.

2) If you remove the bindings as per (1) then it should fix the issue, but this would occur basically if one of the keys is held. I used to have a zoom on a rotary in an old version but if this was not centered it would get stuck zoomed right in. The galaxy map zoom I think is only on the scroll wheel & the two top buttons on the throttle. Double check the mappings in ED, and confirm please if there is anything mapped to the zoom axis under Galaxy map. I am not home so cannot check right now, but that should be the cause, again unless a button is getting stuck down or something odd like that.

Btw - You English is pretty good :)

Ok, looks like I messed up and also had the second rotary switch mapped to the zoom axis. If you center it (where you feel the bump) it should stop staying zoomed in:

Alternatively, clear the mapping (select and press ESC) for the one below:

Edit: Ok, I just tested this out. If you clear this mapping JOY RX-AXIS, this will fix being unable to select & enter the text box with the primary fire once highlighted. You will still be able to zoom using the scroll or top throttle buttons as seen in the pic.

I'll fix this in my next update.

Yep, I wasn't too happy needless to say. On top of the pinky button not working the left click on the castle HAT is starting to go out and the right throttle now wiggles pretty badly in the base.

Not sure if I'm going to exchange it or go for something a little higher quality, either the CH suite or the Warthog I'm thinking... Either way, thanks once again for the hard work and effort you put into this profile. I truly enjoyed it while the X55 lasted!

Update v1.4

Update (v1.4) to my X-55 Ultimate Profile has just gone live.

Few fixes, few additions and few improvements.

Changes in this version:

- Added default mapping for Headlook Toggle & Headlook Center (for Non-TrackIR users). Headlook mode is disabled by default though, so please turn this on in the ED Controls section prior to use.
- Fixed Sensor Range Axis direction.
- Fixed Galaxy Map Zoom prevent Text Box use.
- Add two optional Rotary Axis mappings for the vacant Throttle Rotary (Wingman Target 1-3 & Target/System Panel. I have left these disabled by default, but can be added yourself. Key mappings are done in ED & Saitek profile so, you only need to set the Rotary to Bands in the Saitek software and duplicate the configuration found in the 'Optional Rotary-G Settings' pics folder.
- Reverted back to Forward Throttle with Reverse Toggle as default (prevent accidents for new users).
- All profiles now are name with the version numbers. This will allow you to easily add new versions to your existing versions & switch between.
- Installation Instructions Updated.

For those using previous versions, please update all 3 profiles (ED, Saitek & TrackIR).

Please report back any issues found. I am currently still out exploring close to Sag A*, so some keys I cannot fully test.

Thank you.
