Who would you fight for?

I would stay out of it, because I want to stay allied to both sides.
As an independent contractor I can not afford to create empire or federation sized enemies. It would be bad for business.

Posts like these could do with a summary of the factions histories and philosophies in the OP for new players.

I do not care about their political philosophies. I never trust politicians and their politics. Words from the mouth of a politician do not mean anything to me. A political philosophy is a fantasy concocted for an audience. Political reality is something entirely different.

Id' fight for the currently active community goal that has the highest payout with the least amount of participants (no need to fight to stay in the top 40%, less chance of kill-steals)

Just to be clear ;-)

The Federation are outdated, outmoded and outsized. It's high time their choking evil was dealt with and reduced. They are nothing more than a bunch of hypocritical oppressors who relish in restricting open markets so they can profit from the black one. Their citizens are truly enslaved into their corporate model and then told they are free - AND THEY BUY IT!
They then go around the galaxy crushing independent systems who don't adhere to the bizarre Federal social/economic customs and fashion sense. They'll even kill their own citizens for political posturing.
I'd rather be Independent or, worse case scenario, Alliance than Federal.
Luckily, I don't have to debase myself with any inferior cultures identity as I'm a free citizen of the glorious Empire.
Empire it is then. :p

Just pray you never fall into debt then and have to be slaved, modified , then sent to some hellish mining world where your life span is measured in weeks.

Or find your world in debt to some jumped up imperial jackboot and your inhabitants all get sold into slavery whether they want to or not.

Federation or death.

Bill

PS My friends and family suffered the latter fate... I escaped

That's the problem with unregulated slavery - no career prospects and no honour.
It's interesting why this practise exists, don't you think? If the rest of human space followed the Imperial model for the lowest classes then unregulated slavery would dry up. It's also very telling where the supply of unfortunates stem from.
I'm an ex-Imperial slave. I would recommend it to anyone who suffers a catastrophic financial episode and seeks redemption and dignity. When I finished my bondage, my patron gifted me an Eagle and enough cash to start a career in space.
Come to the Empire, CMDR, and get your vengeance against the true oppressors of humanity - The Federation.

That itself is a philosophy. If you share it with others then as a group that's your groups philosophy. Has nothing to do with politicians. :p
I never asked for their political agendas.

I'll wait out the start of the war and the attrition of the forces on both sides, then I'll side with our new Thargoid overlords when they arrive.

I fight for the alliance , but when there is a war that has nothing to do with the alliance I join the faction that IMO has moral right , and if no lore is there about the war I base my side based on the political type of the subfaction that is fighting

I have two CMDR's.

One of them, who more closely represents my own way of thinking, favors the Alliance, and in a war between the Federation and the Empire would simply do whatever he could to keep it from spilling over into Alliance space. He has no love for or loyalty to either the Federation or the Empire; in fact, he has very little respect for either of them. Unless one side or the other starts committing atrocities, and then he might feel compelled to get involved on the other side. If both sides start committing atrocities, well... at that point, what can you really do?

The other is Imperial born and raised. The Empire is her home, and she'll fight for it.

It's interesting how many people choose simply "The side that's paying the most." Is that a reflection of Frontier not developing engaging backgrounds and storylines for each faction?

I think it's a reflection of the space merc/lone wolf being a popular character concept.

EDIT: stupid phone autotypo. I'd call it autocorrect, except it adds words every time I try to type a contraction.

Wouldn't fight for either - they're just as bad as each other. I'd support Alliance at a pinch but philosophically I prefer Independent democracies. As a cause to fight for that is. As a trader I need to be a bit more pragmatic or I'd never move any cargo at all. Prefer not to deal with dictators or Patronizers but necessity demands that I deal with the corporate wage slavers.

I guess so. I do like the lone wolf stereotype but since starting Elite have been playing as a sort of privateer-type role. I'm looking after myself but under the Federal flag! I like to at least have the idea of a bigger picture in the back of my mind, if that makes sense. It would be nice to have more of a connection with the in-factions. I fought for the Federation at Lugh and did a lot toward the community goal.

It would be nice to have campaign medals or ribbons; something to make players feel that putting their effort in to supporting a faction was worth more than just a few credits and a feeling of satisfaction :D
