Nice! Good to know many of the original Crytek guys are there!

Yeah, these are the geniuses that will beat CryEngine into submission to do what they need it to do in Star Citizen.

TBH, seeing videos like this makes me even more confident CIG is actually going to pull this ridiculously ambitious game off.

A small change, but a good one:

https://robertsspaceindustries.com/...4651-Note-From-The-Chairman-Version-Numbering

When we released our last major game update, 1.1, I posted that going forward we would refer to future public builds as ‘Star Citizen’ rather than ‘Arena Commander.’ Star Citizen 1.1 instead of Arena Commander 1.1. The reasoning behind this decision was the fact that in the near future we won’t just be releasing Arena Commander. We’ll be releasing Star Marine, the initial social module, multi-crew, Squadron 42… and more. Star Citizen is coming together, and it made sense to get that across. Since we wanted the external number to match what we use internally, calling it Star Citizen 1.1 just made sense.

The big problem was that calling the game “1.1” is that it could also imply something I didn’t intend. There’s no proper standard for build numbers, but it is a common practice to refer to your first commercial release as 1.0. Calling what we are releasing Star Citizen 1.1 might imply that Star Citizen is finished, or a game you can pick up and play in its polished form today. Many backers argued this point on the forums, and we listened carefully to the debate.

Many of you may see this as a small thing, easily dismissed or corrected. But what truly struck me about the response was the reasoning that came up time and again: of course backers know and understand where Star Citizen is in development today… but they were concerned that new players learning about the project wouldn’t. And that crystallized something for me: Star Citizen’s community doesn’t just want to play the game they’ve paid for… they care as much as the development team about making sure the game is a success. For all the debate back and forth, the thought that our community would worry quite seriously about excluding future players made me extremely happy.

So of course we resolved to make a change. As noted above, one of the requirements was that it not just be a forward facing community change: if we were going to change how we name our builds, we were going to do it internally and externally. Internally, we had much the same discussion that was going on on the forums: what do we call it? Add a leading 0? Temporarily drop ‘Star Citizen’? A new system of letters? In the process, we reviewed all of your many suggestions. In the end, the answer was that we wanted to keep it Star Citizen and we wanted to call it 1.1 in order to avoid renumbering everything and reworking our stream names (more of a challenge than you would think) and our long term plans. You’re playing the same builds we are, it only makes sense to give you the same information we have. And so with a great deal of very careful consideration I’m happy to announce that we have chosen one of the community’s suggestsions: you are downloading Star Citizen Alpha 1.1 with today’s release. Thank you to everyone out there who took part in this debate, and who helped us decide on the best change to make.

Alpha 1.1.1 – Today’s Update (Primarily Arena Commander improvements)
Alpha 1.1.2 – Code Stability bug fix patch for Pre-Star Marine
Alpha 1.2.0 – Star Marine
Alpha 1.3.0 – Social Module
Hopefully, that solves the numbering issue and helps new backers understand Star Citizen’s status and plans. I will close with a final, genuine thank you to the community for helping sort this out and for caring enough about Star Citizen in the first place that it would ever be an issue.

It is nice to see that CIG reads the concern forum :)

Wow, watched Kre1on's (Probably #1 most of the time) flying... Despite using a mouse, he's maneuvering is just awesome. He's not using gimbals by the way.

Bought in to SC at a low level ages ago.. Just tried to install. Nay chance. Going to need a much bigger HD. Maybe some day. Back to elite.

Controversial idea/suggestion for FPS
Taken from my reddit post:

I'm not a animation programer or anything alike and therefore I don't know much about the difficulties of the actual implementation.
BUT do you think that a stance system, which would allow manual and gradual changes, could increase the skill ceiling and improve the overall FPS experience? Just imagine what would be possible with a HOMAS setup.
Joystick: Directional changes (foward&backward + sideways) with velocity curves on X and Y axis (Animation speed based on input value and stamina). Hold trigger to control height/stance and leaning manually on X&Y axis.
Mouse: Normal gun controls (Aiming)
Furthermore, this system would bring a better VR experience.

Controversial idea/suggestion for FPS

Probably the worst idea for an fps movement scheme I've ever read.
Just doing anything sounds like a struggle.
K&M works absolutely fine for FPS games... don't try and re-invent something that works amazingly well.

Yep. That fixes it I believe. Hopefully attention can be focussed back where it should be.

I'm still a bit confused as to whether it's worth downloading the latest update or not though. I have the Radeon Mustang racer ship. Not really interested in it but it looks like I'd need to pledge to get a different ship? What ships can actually be used right now? I simply can't see the point in splashing out on hangar decorations. On the other hand, I do not mind contributing to a project if I can fire guns at something in anger.

I'm not sure, but I have to admit that this setup sounds reasonably intuitive for me. I didn't want to remove the normal stance system which should be fine for M/Kb users... Could you explain the flaws in further details?

That's the thing, it doesn't need to be intuitive.
M&K works absolutely fine for any form of FPS movement/aim.
You can add to it any form of other movement you might want (like leaning, tilting, crouching, crawling etc).

Using the joystick for movement? You're not controlling Johhny 5 for heaven's sake.
Controlling animation according to input? Do you realize how tedious that sounds?.. not to mention what a nightmare it would be for precise movement.

I've also experienced VR using a joystick as movement... m&k feels a lot more natural and precise.

Gladiator is pretty darn fun. It's definitely one of my favorite ships, aesthetics-wise, as well.

TrackIR & x52. I do wish CIG would finally fix the TrackIR implementation. I'm sick of having the camera descend into my neck when I turn my head.

Jenner, does the hud picture of your ship (in the upper left corner) always flicker to terribly, or is that an artifact from me using a lower than max resolution to watch this (I just have a HD monitor)? The shields strength indicators are useful, but what is the rest of that huge thing supposed to be used for?

Nah, I'll experiment with this setup in Arma... And as far as I know a lot of people used a HOMAS setup for Quake or UT.

What do you mean "nah" ? Nah to what?

Every dueler I used to duel with in QW-Q2-Q3-UT-Qlive (including several pros), all used m&k setup (some rare insane people used trackballs and that worked for them but not in a high tier competitive form).
I've guested in COD tournaments and again, I've never seen a person use a HOMAS setup. I've also played quite a bit of CS and again, I've never seen a single person use a HOMAS setup.
In fact I've never actually chatted to anyone who ever used a HOMAS setup for a popular FPS and probably for good reason.

I'm sure people who use them exist, but they are so far from optimal it's not even funny.

^Some nice flying Jenner!

Thanks. :) I'm no Ace, but I can get through a lot of Vanduul Swarm in a decent fighting ship. PvP is quite another matter. :p

It does flicker - I assume its just buggy for the Gladiator.

As for it use, that ship graphic will tell you how much damage you sustain (color coded) as well as displaying which pieces of your ship have been blown off. lol.
