Newcomer / Intro I'm kinda discouraged

HEY! I resemble that remark! :) I can fly okay but getting a bead on my target with fixed weapons drives me crazy. I wasn't the best combat pilot in Elite '84 back when I was a kid and I'm certainly not the best now that I'm in my 40's and wondering if bifocals might help me improve my aim. Frontier gave us the gimbaled weapons specifically to help folks like me to find the game more approachable... If the OP is having trouble touching the target I say there is no shame in pulling out gimbals. :)

lol you tell him.
I agree. Gimballed weapons are great and probably almost essential at this level.
they may be less powerful but it doesn't matter how powerful your weapons are if they only hit vacuum lol.

Other in this thread have been giving more specific advice. All I want to add is that, if the idea of this game is fun to you, then I hope you stick with it. Some of us have been playing longer, but no one was born with the knowledge of how to play the game. I think it is fair to say that everyone has struggled with some aspects of it at some point. I know I have.

Elite does have a high learning curve, but its different from the high learning curve in other games. It's mostly a matter of getting a handle on the various details and subtleties.

I used FRAPs to record my first hour in the game. I watched part of it recently, and it is hilariously painful to see how nervous I was pulling out of Trev. Station (though I was also in awe - I'm in space!). I forgot to raise my landing gear before going into the SC and other very basic misteps. That isn't to say I am the best player now, I still make mistakes.

Elite does have a steep learning curve, but once you get up there, its pretty smooth sailing to a career as a BH, trader, explorer - or all three. I hope you stick with it, and enjoy the Galaxy Commander!

... I just had my *first* interdiction / pirate attack... got me a nice 11000cr bounty from that. I started playing maybe a week ago. justr sayin'...

Get a cheap thrustmaster Tflight hotas. I picked a used one up for just 20$. But it makes a huge difference. Couldn't play the game without it! It's a must!

Also, don't expect to be an ace pilot in a day. It takes practise, and a whole lot of it!

lol i did say i'd used them myself before i got the hang of dogfights :p i'm just at the same age but don't need the glass ....yet :D

As others have said, this game takes time to learn.
You have to practice.
Plus combat is expensive, you cannot always win, sometimes you loose, this costs you the rebuy price of your ship:)

I had a joystick for my Apple //e, I probably got it specifically for Elite even. My Apple was totally pimped out. 32 KiloBytes of RAM, TWO floppy drives, later on a 5 MegaByte hard drive. I remember docking being a lot harder in the original, and combat being easier. But it has been a while so my memory could be faulty. A docking computer was always the first upgrade I bought, but I don't think in the original it replaced anything. Which is why I haven't got one for ED yet. With the Sidewinder or Hauler not putting in a 2 ton cargo bay is a significant difference in cargo capacity.

I've been doing OK in regular piloting, but not so good in combat. I'll have to give the gimbaled weapons a try.

Just logged on to second this post. I've found the T-Flight to be a very nice, reasonably priced, entry-level joystick and throttle. I bought it about two days after downloading my beta client and quickly finding out that keyboard and mouse were fine for routine space trucking but really really weren't going to help me in combat. Not without more harsh language than I was prepared to use anyway. :D For those that do use KB/M for dogfighting - I tip my hat to you all.

It's not the prettiest looking piece of kit, certainly not compared to the X52 or the Warthog, but it's robust enough and it just makes the whole game much more immersive. Rumour has it that I've ocassionally played with the throttle reversed simply so that throttling up to engage the frameshift drive means pulling back on the throttle lever (*cough* - Star Wars *cough*)... #40yearoldkid

I also believe what what you lose in weapon power is more than made up for by increased lock on time.

Well, that's because the C=64 was a toy computer. Get an Apple, loser. ;)

At that time my dad did have an apple for his accounting business. He had an apple 2E.
But the C64 was ours :)

At that time I didn't even know the apple had any games.

If nothing else, you can get a game pad, Binding the controls is a nightmare, but once you get it to somthing you like it works great,

Keyboard and mouse are really the worst way to play this game,

Dont sweat it bud, The game is harsh for all new players, But once you get the hang of it, You may find you cant put it ddown.

.

Yes, so true!
Took me ages to get all the controls right on my Tflight hotas and the voice control headset.
But it was time very well spend.
No more keybord needed at all! All stick and voice control.
I love it!
And I need it for the oculus ;)

Thanks guys, your advice all seems to be helpful.

I'll try changing the controls around, and see if I can get rid of the pulse lasers.

I'm thinking about getting a stick and see if that'll help me enjoy the game more too

A joystick will be your best friend :)
