Idea for the game... :D

Thought we were pilots. not crafters...? The game is about flying ships not making things.

I see this may be a few people opinions, But alas it is a Space Sim. Therefore shouldn't there be some added variety? Im sure in a dystopian future it wouldn't all be about blowing up ships.

In fairness the ships have to come from somewhere? Why not players?
You don't have to craft if all you want to do is fly out shoot some pirates/or be a pirate then you do that.
But also you have to think to yourself, If they only designed it to be shooting... Why add mining and trade at all?

Answer : Because it isnt just about the shooting, its the exploration of the galaxy how you deem fit, And should provide you with the tools to do what you wish.

Sorry I can't find any quotes as it was mentioned within several other threads over a period of time but Michael implied we would be able to create new custom modules by collecting certain resources through mining, trading and salvage, but it was not mentioned where or who would "create" the modules. The main example given were custom shield generators that were stronger against weapon fire but weaker against collisions. That was the only example he gave but it was to illustrate two things.
1) We'd have to collect the materials (hence the similarities to "crafting") to create the new modules
2) custom modules would have added pro/cons to standard modules so you'd never create an "ultimate" setup as there would always be downsides to keep it balanced.
Not a lot else has been said on the subject but what I've recalled is pretty accurate to what Michael originally said.

In EVE players are the big shots, in Elite we are more or less nothing. You can fly an airplane, but that does not make you to be an airplane designer.

Elite should not try to be EVE. I played 2 weeks of EVE and could not play a second more, and I have ~4 months of Elite behind. Please, do not copy EVE.
I still admit that Elite is missing the end game. When we have everything, what do we do? From what do we competite?
Also, Elite needs desperately content to play with your friends, communities, etc. Create/Do something together.

But I still think that weapons and ships could have variants. Easy way to make new ships and equipment, just change the statistics and keep the same graphics.

Mining and as well piracy, should probably have the highest income rate in the game.

Whilst I partly agree with you, this will never be like EVE, Firstly Eve is 3rd person and not controlled the same way, secondly EVE weapons function differently.
My point is they already added mining and trade (from EVE or any other space sim) why not continue.
We have what we want a 1st person right in the action space free for all, why not add more to the list of things to do?

Also you contradicted yourself you say you don't want it to be like EVE, Yet you'd like variants on ships and weapons? This could be aquired by manufacture (crafting) or something to that effect.

I was thinking that maybe I could just for example buy different variants from different systems?

I think that the background simulation should be more alive, and through that to create a feeling that the materials mined and traded actually matter.

I did like tv-show called Firefly, I would like more that and less EVE. I have a feeling that that is the direction where Elite is heading, well at least I hope so. If you have not seen the Firefly, I highly recommend.

It's about being the pilot of a ship and doing things that are directly related to that, trading, bounty hunting, mining, exploring.
Crafting is outside of that role.

Isn't the game about doing what you want?

What you want within the role of being the pilot of your ship.

Because the current mining mechanics is rather dull, adding crafting to further the process and purpose of initially mining the material makes

mining a more fufiling task, and with more gameplay and depth ... players who wants to play a miner would have more things to do, than

chipping the rocks in space.

I have understood that they are reworking mining, so no worries with that.

I think that there still should be a small upgrade for now. Simply increase the commodity prices -> Would directly affect to mining income.
It may not fix it for good, but would make it playable for now. Also pirates do need a buff, and higher commodity prices would affect to that as well.

I think that crafting can be done by the background simulator. Right now the simulator is not really doing much, but it could.

So no first person stuff on the cards for a future expansion then?

I won't want to see crafting in the sense that the OP put it. Frankly, I think it's just a bit too far in a direction that I wouldn't see fitting for ED.

But I wouldn't mind seeing some light fabrication. Using a Processor module to turn mined metals into ammo over time, etc.

Also, I don't believe that quote from Mike is relevant to the discussion about crafting weapons - that was a misinterpretation by the next guy who assumed it meant crafted from resources. I believe it means crafted out of mods to make a a weapon with unique properties.

Well even pilots need to take a shower (and more) every now and then, dont they? ^^

Crafting may be in the game at some point, though maybe not in the way you mean it, something more indirect i suppose, through a station, specialised npc or what have you.
I wouldnt be against it but i'd like it not to be too 'artificial' or 'unrealistic', and there are more important things to be done first imo.
