So, the Federal Dropship...

I just got to Ensign and was thinking about getting the Dropship. At first glance it doesn't have anything going for it, and I'm not too happy about having to sell my Vulture to get it.

So, is there any reason to get it at the moment?

Sorry for the incoherent post, language isn't my strong point. :p

I really dont think there is any point - lots of people like the dropship - but that is more of an emotional attachment, like I had for my T6 back in my trading days :)

I haven't flown one, I am sure it will be fun and I am sure I would grow to love her but for now I am ranking up as high as I can for the corvette.

I think dropship's main value and functionality comes with carrying passengers which isn't part of the game yet.

Its a decent ship. Not stellar, but it will get the job done.

The dropship as it stands now isn't worth getting.
if they ever fix armor to cover subsystems however it will be amazing. It has more plating on it than the Python.
its a very heavy ship that flies with all the grace of a brick. save your money and keep the vulture come back to it later when you don't care how much it costs and aren't trying to make money with it. Or when they make armor actually do something.

Ok thanks, I think that's what I'll do :)

The side mounted weapon points are a little awkward - I couldn't quite get them both to fire forward at the same time, was only able to fire the side to which my opponent was leaning to at the time.

i wouldn't sell your Vulture, regardless of what else you end up getting. too many times when flying a larger ship you'll wish you could get back into something small and powerful just for some fun combat or to quickly make a few million in a RES.

it's simply too enjoyable and useful to get rid of.

All these commanders rubbishing (? :)) the Dropship is the precise reason why I went for it and yes, I did in fact sold my fully pimped Vulture for it.

On top of its mean looks, superb hardpoint placement and huge abundance of power supply with the 6A box in it, I adore the Dropship's (lack of) handling. It flies sideways. I mean it constantly, violently, flies sideways. You learn to control that (I fly FA always on with extensive use of thrusters) and I'm inclined to say there's nothing that'll put such a smile on your face.

The Vulture feels overpowered. Clinical. An physics lesson rather than a drinking spree. Michael Schumacher rather than Colin McRae. Nissan GT-R rather than a 911 GT2. It's, I'm going to say it, boring! With the Dropship, you'll be drifting all over the place. Boosting in a RES with pitch/yaw anywhere else than neutral is suicide but boost is the only way to get it to stop drifting. And because you'll be constantly (constantly!) drifting, it's dead easy to fly in one direction and shoot your fixed guns in another, making Anaconda or Clipper battles screaming fun!

If you've got the money to afford a decent plant, A distributor, A FSD and some guns AND you mean business flying spaceships (although why else would you play this game), give it a go. You may be surprised. I was. And I'm never selling my Dropship.

I'm with DidierDrbois

I sold my Vulture and hit RESs and Nav Beacons with the Dropship. Since doing it, I haven't been able to go back to other ships, as it is so much fun.

For PVE you can build it into a real tank - the huge power supply means that you can experiment with all sorts of load-outs without any power issues. I currently use the C3 gimballed beam and four D2 gimballed cannons and it destroys large ships in seconds. If you are comfortable with FA off, and get used to the drift, you can easily hold your own against elite NPCs.

The cockpit is great, the ship looks and sounds cool - and, yeah, since my Cobra early on I haven't been as satisfied with a ship.

Be warned though: it's not cheap - I've sunk about 90 mil into mine and still haven't upgraded to military grade composite - and the first time you fly it, especially coming from the Vulture, it will feel like a slow brick. I had instant buyer's remorse . . but then it grew on me.

(it can land at outposts as well - worth remembering in the context of bigger ships).

The dropship is a ton of fun to fly. It basically handles as if you have flight assist off all the time. It's a bit upsetting at first, but an absolute blast when you get used to it. Quite possibly the most entertaining ship I've flown yet, and I've flown everything but the t9, anaconda, and python.

I might add that I haven't yet found the gonads to go PvP with it myself. But last night I got a rare opportunity to wing-up (my friend's had a baby hence rare) with Vulture-flying peep. I loaded the Dropship with Railguns around a large beam and yeah, that thing wipes the floor with a platoon of M1 Abrams.

So what it looks like is that the dropship takes a lot of patience to learn how to fly and is very much an acquired taste.

At the moment I am enjoying my vulture, so I see no real reason to upgrade to a larger ship if it it isn't extremely superior, keeping in mind that the asp was too big for me to really find enjoyable to fly. When the next test server is up I'll give it a fly, and I might get it if its effective when passengers become a thing, but at the moment I think I'll stick to the vulture. I might even start grinding ranks for the clipper ;)

Thanks for the replies guys :)

The only ship that can carry more cargo and land at an outpost is the Python.

Depending on where you are, being in a large sized ship can be a pain sometimes.

All true, but the Dropship only carries about 30 more tons of cargo than an Asp.

I made a break in Elite, since it still needs some tuning, but i owned the dropship before i sold it for testing all the new ships..

but there is a huge advantage since the new patches.. armor repair is pretty cheap, an 50% hull dmg asp only cost 18k credits.. so this ship with mirrored armor and some armor expansions in the not used slots, this thing can tank like a boss and it flies like autopilot off. before the patch only 1-3% hull dmg could ruin a whole evening of flying this ship.
