Feds, Empire and/or Alliance "power" moves. Think Putin in Ukraine, the United States in the Middle East, China in the Pacific or similar "power play" by one or more of the "big three" in ED. Maybe a Thargoid but, I sincerely doubt Thargoids will be in anytime before Christmas or Summer of next year.

My guess is similar to the previous poster: an change in the relationship between players and minor factions, including full player membership of one or more minor factions. I think the server-side update will allow FD to manage dynamically-created inter-faction relationships, allowing for the building of temporary power blocs with multiple factions in networks via alliances, or sabotaging them to aid rivals. Basically, the expansion of the existing factions into in-game organisations for players to join without having to cater to player-created guilds.

With the overhaul in missions systems, I think it has to do with a shift of power in the galaxy.
Right now, the federation have a lot of control (as we should!) but something will come along to either shift the power control into another factions favour, causing numerous disruptions and events... or something comes along which will end up with a new galactic power in play, bringing the current factions closer together to fight a bigger and far more powerful... thing.
Who knows... it could be anything... could even be... alien like....

That would be some undertaking. Highly unlikely. Impossible. As for the secret core - probably peanut ice cream, maybe caramel.
It's the need to change out your power core every 30,000 ly or 4 days whichever comes first. Have to keep those dockhands employed.

Maybe it is also integrating the bulletin missions towards that effect or featuring some reward system when achieving such a goal, but now with a more permanent effect.
In other online games this is called community warfare. All-out war? Maybe. A likely plot is that the current factions will be at war when there will be a Thargoid invasion to allow for reunification. Please see the parallels to Battletech.
